The Queen's Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games since 1958. It symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth. On 14 March 2005 Her Majesty placed a message in the baton at Buckingham Palace, signalling the start of a journey of almost 180,000 kilometres. The baton's journey to the opening ceremony took exactly one year and one day, arriving at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on 15 March 2006. It was the first baton relay to visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth. Athletes and non-athletes alike shared the privilege of carrying the baton. In Bendigo two sites were chosen for events. Slide photographs of two Stanhope residents prepared to go to the ball held in honour of Princess Alexandra's visit to Melbourne in 1959. The ball was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. Elizabeth Brown (on the right) was a resident at Stanhope after her father died in 1953 and she came to Melbourne from Seymour to compete further studies at Toorak Teachers College. She was chosen to present a bouquet to Princess Alexandra at the Royal Ball. Elizabeth wore a pink taffeta gown and was accompanied by a Legacy boy, Julian Hyde. The handwritten note implies it is the visit of the Queen Mother, but it was a ball held to welcome Princess Alexandra in September 1959. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The orthodox version of the origins and history of the Kew Elder(ly) Citizens’ Association was established by Cr. W. D. Vaughan in his book Kew’s Civic Century (1960), when he wrote that: "When Mrs. C. H. Simpson was Mayoress in 1952 she set up the Elderly Citizens’ Association to care for the needs of ages persons in Kew. The idea was strongly supported and a start was made by providing social afternoons for elderly folk at Southesk. Visiting sick people in their homes, providing firewood where needed, and other activities were undertaken by the Association. The aid of Council was sought to further the work. It was decided that a social unit for elderly folk be established at Southesk." (p.126-7). In the following pages, he describes in detail Council’s role in formally establishing the Association. This ‘official’ version was reasserted in the later Thematic Environmental History of the City of Boroondara (2012). However the origins and gestation of community of organisations is rarely straightforward. In 1965, five years after Vaughan’s book was published, the author of East Kew Women’s Club : Twenty Years : 20-7-1945-30-7-1965, writing about the period July 1947 to July 1950, described the role the Club played in establishing the Kew Elder Citizens Association. The author wrote: "At a meeting of the Kew Community Aid, the plight of many elderly people in Kew who were dependent on pensions was raised and in order to ascertain their needs the practice was begun of serving morning tea at the Masonic Hall in Walpole Street, where pensions were then paid. From this beginning the Kew Elder Citizens Association was formed in Kew with wide support, and Club members gave willing support on the committee, in helping serve afternoon tea and in entertainment." (p.4) Photographic evidence also leads to questions about Vaughan’s version of events. A framed photograph in the Society’s Collection shows a Public Meeting to form the Kew Elder Citizens Association in a room at Southesk a year earlier in 1951. Whatever version of the origins of the Association is correct, a later framed photograph in the Society’s collection shows the opening of the completed Clubrooms of the Kew Elder Citizens at South Esk by the Hon. E.P. Cameron M.L.C, Minister of Health, on 12 November 1956. Jane Hamilton applied for a licence for the Queen's Arms hotel in Quarry Hill in Dec. 1872. It also provided 8 rooms for boarding of gentlemen. Jane was the wife of James Hamilton jnr. who, until 1872, had been in partnership with his father, James snr. at Hamilton and Son, wholesale stationers and general merchants of Hargreaves St., Bendigo. At this time there was a conveyance five times a day between the Queen's Arms and the Shamrock hotel.A letter written to the Bendigo Advertiser by E.V. Gray; the letter was published on 09/06/1972. In 1898, when Princess Wilhelmina attained her majority, she succeeded her Mother, Queen Emma, who had been Regent for 10 years. Wilhelmina reigned for 50 years until her abdication in favour of her daughter Juliana in 1948.The House of Orange is one of the most popular monarchies in Western democracies. Widespread celebrations accompanied the Abdication/Accession. A souvenir pottery mug handed out to school children in Amsterdam in 1948 to commemorate the abdication of Queen Wilhelmina and the accession to the throne of Queen Juliana. This kind of mug (without a handle) was typically used by children to drink their milk. It is illustrated with the initials of the two Queens surrounded by oranges (for the House of Orange). Blue banners link the bunches of oranges. There is also a depiction of the famous steeple of the Wester Church, the Amsterdam coat of Arms, a ship, a bridge and a typical canal house.Above the W: "Dankbaar voor het verleden" (Grateful for the past) 1898-1948. Robert James Minnitt introduced the concept of self-administered analgesia, using an apparatus designed and built in conjunction with London scientific instrument-maker, Charles King. This 1935 Coronation medal was awarded to individuals for distinguished Citizenry. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V, a commemorative medal awarded to citizens who had made contributions to their community, as recognised by their local council. The silver medal has the profile of the King and Queen Mary on the front, in their crowns and robes. Around the edge in raised letters is written 'George V and Queen Mary May VI MCMXXXV'. On the reverse are the letters GRI (Georgius Rex Imperator) in the centre, with the outline of a crown directly above the letters and the words 'May 1910' and 'May 1935' written either side of GRI.
