This medical instrument was used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was built in the 1950s specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.Historical: Shows the development of scientific hospital equipment. Provenance: Used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was remote and therefore required good equipment. In a white cardboard box 2 metal instruments. One is a pair of scissors with 'teeth' at the handle end and a bow at the instrument end when the ends meet The scissors are bent before the pivot. The other instrument is a long rod with a screw at one end that turns the other end around. This other end has a funnel that comes to a point. This drum comes from the group which is now called " Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums". As the Warrnambool Pipe Band it was formed in 1906 and today its aim is to foster a taste for bagpipe music. A separate Ladies' Band was set up in 1950 and combined with the Mens' Band in 1974. The Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums is held in high regard nationally.This drum is a memento of an important musical group in WarrnamboolThis is a large, circular drum for a pipe band. The outside centre is skin surrounded by wooden rings, one of which is painted black. Between the rings is a cream and black mottled pattern on a curved piece made of composite material. There are eight silver tuning rods equally spaced along the side. One of these has two pieces of red tape attached. This resistor was part of the Hydro generator control metering system which displays what electricity is produced at the underground generators. The control centre can be hundreds of meters above the generators and this resistor reduces the large current to a small voltage entering a calibrated control monitor. This resistor is highly significant to the Kiewa Valley because it represents a major construction and ongoing operational industry dealing with the supply of hydro electricity to Victoria. Although it is relatively small in size it is part of the controlling mechanism for the supply of a non polluting energy source for home and industrial use.This mainly metal and wire resistor has been built of copper and brass and designed to carry a current of 2000 Amperes. Wires are wound around a non conductive cement block which has grooves on the top and bottom ledges to hold the wires snuggle into place. Originally this teaching model belonged to Prince Henry's hospit�l library and was transferred to the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton in the 1970s by Sister Gertrude Berger, a famous nurse-educator, who is best known for her work leading up to the transfer of nursing education in Victoria from hospitals to universities in 1986.Gerty (as she was known in the School of Nursing) bought them in Europe in the late 1940s and early 1950s.Model of a foetus, approximately seven weeks. This item was donated to the museum by Joseph Dallimore. Dallimore was brought up at Lake Gillear, and as a young man he left Australia to travel overseas both to help his parent's business in the wool trade and for pleasure. He wrote many letters to his parents keeping them updated with the prices he received from selling wool and on his travels. Later in life Dallimore enlisted in the Australian Army and went on to have a distinguished career during the Boer War. He would have collected this piano whilst on service in South Africa.South African thumb piano from the Zulu culture. It is a wooden panel board with 15 iron finger keys in it. They are stuck onto the wood at one end with some sort of glue and also held in place by an iron rod passing over the top of them. At the bottom of the board is a metal panel and attached to that is a small circular cymbal. This large 10 gallon boiler would have been used over an open fire or placed on top of coals to boil clothes clean. They were first made in England during the 1700's and onwards.They were shipped to Australia and other British Empire countries to be purchased by early settlers. A large antique black oval cast iron Boiler Pot with small curved lifting handles for holding it on both sides. There is a large cast moveable carrying iron handle with a bend at the top for hooking onto an 'S' shaped hook or rod to hang over an open fire. This handle is attached on each side to thick iron loops. This Gunter’s Chain, an old land surveying instrument, is named after its inventor, Edmund Gunter (1581-1626), an English mathematician and astronomer. It was first produced in 1620. The tool has 100 links and is 66 feet or one chain long. The links are marked off in groups of ten by metal rings or tags. A quarter chain (25 links) is called a rod or pole and ten chains make a furlong and 80 chains make a mile. The traditional cricket pitch is 22 yards or one chain long. This Gunter’s Chain is of considerable significance because: 1. It is an early land measuring tool that was used for over 250 years and has great historical and mathematical significance. A Gunter’s Chain would have been used when forming and building local roads from the earliest days of settlement. 2. It has a possible local connection as it was given to the Historical Society by a local person in 1965 and possibly came from the property of ‘Rosehill’ This is a metal tool which consists of 100 metal pieces or links joined together by loops at each end with two metal loops in between each link. The links joined together form a chain. The two ends of the chain have small metal handles attached At intervals along the chain there are additional rings or metal pieces attached. This photograph is of Battery Box, showing the mouth where quartz is fed in. The five stamper rods can also be seen. This is one of a series of photographs of the Rutherglen Gold Battery. The battery's purpose was to crush quartz from nearby quartz reefs and extract gold from within. The battery was erected in 1908 and consists of a five-head battery, Wilfrey table, Bergin pan, portable steam engine and shed. The battery was restored in 2011/12 and can be viewed daily between 9.00am and 5.00pm. See website for details.
