The Story of S.S. "Santhia" sank while in service as a troopship, of her subsequent salvage, and of how her bell came to Bogong School. Bogong State School was built and used from the 1940s when the SECV was constructing the KHES. The school bell was unique having originated from the ship "Santhia'. John Russell Senior was a blacksmith, wheelwright, farmer and later chairman of the Orbost Butter Factory, makers of Sunny South Butter (today part of Murray Goulburn Co Ltd). His blacksmith business was in Nicholson Street, Orbost. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of the book-keeping of an early 20th century Orbost business and is a useful research tool.A white paper account with red lines and black print. As the photograph on the front page of this pamphlet suggests, the ‘Home & Family Week’ activities may have been inspired by the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth in England. The program for the week included exhibitions, speakers, musical entertainments, a church service, children’s films, public meetings, discussion groups and a youth tea. A committee was formed in Warrnambool to organize the week’s events and the Chairman was Mr Lindsay Anderson.This program is of interest because it gives us details of an event that was staged in Warrnambool in 1953 – Home & Family Week. Many of the speakers and chairpersons for the activities of Home & Family Week were well-known people in the Warrnambool community at the time – Dr H. Holmes, Edith Jacobs, Rupert Philpott, Mrs J.O. Tait, Dr Brauer, Mr E. Willison, Arnold Westgarth etc. This is a pamphlet - one sheet folded in two to make six pages. It has the program for Home & Family Week held in Warrnambool in 1953. The State Electricity Commission Sub-Branch of the RSL convened a commemoration service for Sir John Monash on Sunday 16 April 1972, which took place at the equestrian statue of Monash at the Shrine. The MC was Legatee D.J. Simonson (President 1970 and great nephew of Sir John), who also laid a wreath on behalf of Melbourne Legacy, and the address was given by Dr. J.A.L. Matheson, Vice Chancellor of Monash University. Matheson spoke of the establishment of the University in 1958 and how appropriate it had been to name it after Monash, comparing the struggle to create a world class university with Monash's struggles on the Western Front. Appropriately Monash had been chairman of the constructing body of the Shrine. In 1923 he was approached to become the first President of Legacy, a position which he declined as he was heavily involved as the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission. Sir Reginald Alexander Dallas Brooks (1896–1966), State Governor of Victoria 1949 - 1963 was the Patron of the Mission and guest speaker at a special fundraising dinner held to commemorate the centenary of a mission to seamen in Victoria. The image depicts the State Governor flanked by Archbishop of Melbourne and E.B.Coles, Chairman of the Mission, presenting a cheque as donation, at the centenary dinner. Two patterns of clasp knife were supplied to the Australian Military Forces in the WW2 era by the Carr Fastener Company. These clasp knives were identical to those made by Whittingslowe Engineers that were made in the Whittingslowe factory under contract to Carr Fasteners. William Whittingslowe had a close association with Carr Fasteners prior to WW2 and had been Chairman of Carr Fasteners for some time.Smaller sized canoe shaped body military steel clasp knife. The clasp knife is the Carr Fast second pattern with the improved tin opener, manufactured in Australia in the World War Two era. The clasp knife has a blade, a tin/bottle opener, a marline spike as well as a screw driver and a copper wire shackle used to attach the knife to a lanyard or belt clip. The body of the knife is held together by steel rivets. Indentations to aid opening are located on the top RHS of the blade, and on the top LHS of the tin opener. This trowel was presented to John Russell, director of Orbost Butter Factory for fiftyyears and Chairman for nine years. John Russell was an early Orbost blacksmith in Orbost, and director of the Orbost Butter Factory for 50 years. He came to Orbost in c. 1890 at the invitation of another early settler, James Nixon, became a blacksmith, and later a farmer and landholder. Many of his descendants still live in the Orbost area.This item is significant because of its association with the Orbost Butter Factory as well as the connection with the Russell family, Orbost pioneers.A silver (plated?) trowel ornately decorated with engravings. These notes were used extensively in the book the "Wielands of Heathmont", pages 18 and 19, written by Pat Talbot and her husband Don. The notes tell how in 1922 a Railway League was formed with Herman Pump as chairman. The Wieland brothers used their horses and plough in 1926 to help build the Heathmont station. Pat was the-great -Granddaughter of Carl Wieland. The notes also include the Heathmont Information League. The article describes how he was intrumental in obtaining the land for the school as one of the Formative Committee members. Also a member of the school's first Council and then the Chairman of the Building Fund. Richard Carter followed in his Father's footsteps in the Real Estate business.
