The South Warrnambool Primary school No 1902 was opened in 1877 by the mayor at the time Cr J Cramond. The first teacher was Mrs Eliza Clarke. It catered for the children of the strong and closely knit community of South Warrnambool. The Mc Donald family was one of these families. A clear photograph of a school with which many past students would have fond memories. A contribution over 25 years to a primary school in this case by W D McDonald is a story of personal endeavour. This club was established in 1930 with Fletcher Jones (President) and Bon Nutt being notable early members. A ladies’ club was also formed in 1930. As Warrnambool has a bathing and surf beach and is situated on a coastline with many popular surf beaches the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club is an important group with a proud history of service to the community. The current clubhouse, built by members and other volunteers in the 1950s, includes a public restaurant today. This badge is interesting as a memento of the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club, an important club in Warrnambool’s community. This is a diamond-shaped cloth badge. This is the story of the work of Father Tom Brophy, mainly concentrating on his work with youth in Warrnambool. Ordained as a Catholic priest in 1962, Fr Brophy worked in Ballarat and established a Ballarat Youth Centre and a Hostel for young men. He was moved to Warrnambool and arrived in early 1972. Although in Warrnambool for just two years Fr Brophy had an enormous impact in the community, establishing the Freedom Zone Youth Centre and the Warrnambool Home for Boys. He died at the early age of 45 and was buried in Warrnambool with a large number of local people attending his funeral. A Brophy Memorial Hostel was established and later developments include a Youth Centre in Timor Street and the present day Brophy Family and Youth Services organization. This book is of some importance as it outlines the work in Warrnambool of Father Tom Brophy, a Catholic priest whose name has become synonymous in Warrnambool with youth projects. These framed tourist maps came from the Lane Foundation so it is presumed that they were from the office of Lane’s Travel Service which operated from 205 Raglan Parade Warrnambool with the known dates, the 1950s and 1960s. The proprietor, Alan Lane, was a successful Warrnambool businessman who operated a Warrnambool and district bus service as well as his travel business. He was heavily involved in local community affairs being a Warrnambool Councillor for 18 years from 1952 to 1970 and President of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce for six years. He was a major donor to the Warrnambool Performing Arts Centre, the Warrnambool Art Gallery and the St. John of God Hospital and left the bulk of his estate to the Alan Lane Foundation which has contributed millions of dollars to local organizations and programs. Alan Lane died in 1995. These framed maps are of some interest as examples of the tourism maps used to promote the city and district in the 1950s and 60s. This is a tourist map of the Warrnambool C.B.D. and adjoining streets produced as an advertisement for Olympic Tyres. It is multi-coloured and has cartoon sketches of the main tourist attractions and pointers to attractions outside of the main city area. It includes an inset black and white photograph of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and an advertisement for Olympic Tyres. The Tawonga Primary School celebrated its centenary with a program including a fete, sports, family dance and combined church service over the weekend of the 25th - 26th Oct. 1980. The newspaper covers the Alpine Shire and included further articles that would interest visitors to the centenary.Tawonga School was one of the earliest schools in the Kiewa Valley supplying an education for the children of the local farming community. The Bogong Hotel at Tawonga, the Tawonga Butter Factory and the town of Mt Beauty articles were printed providing up to date historical information on prime locations nearby. Of interest as the Hotel has burnt down and the Butter factory no longer exists. In 1977 a group of Mount Beauty cross country skiers formed the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. In 1979, a version of the famous Birkebeiner race, the first Australian Birkebeiner was held at Falls Creek. In June 1990 representatives from Australia put their case for a southern hemisphere race in the series. Following a trial event in 1990. Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet in the winter of 1991, with the first Kangaroo Hoppet. In 1991 a parade and commemorative torch lighting ceremony were organised in Mt Beauty as part of the celebrations to mark the first official Kangaroo Hoppett with participation from local community groups and commercial organisations, the Chamber of Commerce, local government representatives and individuals.Kangaroo Hoppet caters to diverse interests by offering a 42km and 21km event. It also offers a 7km event that attracts skiers, ranging from elite juniors to parents, grandparents, babies and first time skiers. It is recognised on the world cross country ski race calendar. It brings large numbers of participants and spectators to the area which support tourism, local businesses and employment. The 2018 event will be the 28th Kangaroo Hoppet, with cross country skiers travelling from across the country and overseas to compete.Set of 13 colour photographs of the street parade to celebrate the first Official Hoppet race run at Falls Creek in 1991. At this time the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was coming to a close and the town of Mount Beauty and its infrastructure was being handed over by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) to the Bright Shire. Prior to the sealing of the Kiewa Valley Highway in 1950, all heavy road stock including building materials, farm equipment and other heavy machinery had to be transported via railway lines to either Albury, Wodonga or Bright and then transported overland for the remainder of the distance by wagon on rough, poorly made roads. Trains also services the mining industries of the Ovens Valley and the transportation of tourists to Mount Buffalo and the very popular Mount Buffalo Chalet.Steam trains were a major form of transport for rural community members prior to the introduction of road transport. Local producers including farmers relied on rail transport to send and receive essential building equipment, farming produce, materials, stock and mail to maintain their lifestyles and social connections with the outside world. 3 black and white photographs of a building being transported by steam train. The Anglican Church at Kiewa. The first stone was laid on the 29th Oct. 1924. In 1879, the Yackandandah rector commenced services on Sundays in private homes in the Kiewa Valley. In 1911 Anglicans met in the Kiewa Methodist Church to elect a committee to organise financial offers and so it eventually became a vestry.The town Kiewa is in the Kiewa Valley. The church served other communities in the Valley. The book records the local populations and their commitment to religion. Its biggest success was the 'Snack Bar', a food outlet at Falls Creek, selling hot pies and coffee. From 1964 in a caravan, to 1965 - 1971 in a bus the snack bar operated, until it was sold in 1989. Mt Beauty & District Meals on Wheels committee was formed on 6th Dec. 1967, possibly under the Elderly Citizens Welfare Council News (or Senior Citizens Mt Beauty) with service commencing on 16th July 1968. Volunteers transported meals from the Hospital Kitchen to the elderly and sick members of the community each day including weekends. Eventually the Shire managed the meals and roster until recent times when, in 2016, Alpine Health took over. Members of the Mt Beauty community recognised the need for meals to be delivered to the elderly and sick. They formed a committee and organised the means (rules, meals, containers, roster ) by which they could achieve their goal with volunteers and the Tawonga District Hospital. The first delivery was recorded by the press and was on film by AMV 4 Albury TV station for their local news. Rev Walter Guthrie Bower was born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England in 1877. He was a graduate of London University and was ordained a priest in 1901. He had been a curate of St. Michael & All Angels, Bedminster, then he became the Vicar of St. Thomas, Bristol, for 8 years prior to coming to Warrnambool in 1923. He made a lasting impression on the Parish with his teaching and Christian humility and service. He was a quiet, scholarly, Christian gentleman who endeared himself to all sections of the community. He was married to Norah Marianne. He resigned from the Vicariate of Warrnambool in 1932, to return to England to accept the living of Metfield with Withersdale, Suffolk. HIs address when he died was - The Vicarage, Metfield, Harleston, Norfolk. He died on Mar 26th, 1936 aged 59 yrs leaving his widow Norah. Norah died in 1963 aged approx 77 yrs in Horiston, Devon. This tray was commissioned as a perpetual trophy for the Apex District 2 (south west Victoria) public speaking competition. The names of 27 winners from 1977 to 2003 are inscribed on the tray. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club established in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This tray is of interest as an example of the awards given by local Apex Clubs and is retained because the Warrnambool Apex Club closed in 2011. This is a rectangular-shaped silver-plated tray with an etched decorative pattern, two handles attached to the base by metal screws and two side railings also attached to the tray by metal screws. The base has a brown board (mock leather?) inserted through the metal screws. The tray has the names of the winners of the trophy inscribed around the edge of the tray. This tie pin belonged to Mirth Marfell who was a student at Warrnambool High School from 1929 to 1930 and from 1935 to 1936. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, was born in Warrnambool in 1919. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing. This tie pin is of interest, firstly as a memento of Warrnambool High School from the 1920s and 30s and secondly because it belonged to Mirth Marfell, a Warrnambool person who had a distinguished nursing career.Circular metal and enamel tie pin with silver shield and royal blue text on green background and a royal blue scroll with text underneath. The senior section was later called Warrnambool Technical College and then Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education. The latter institute moved to Sherwood Park, Warrnambool and became the present-day Warrnambool campus of Deakin University. Warrnambool Technical School moved to Caramut Road, Warrnambool and is today known as Brauer College. The badge was donated by Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell. She was born in Warrnambool in 1919. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing.
