Tool - Horse-drawn Metal Scoop Road-working
This medium sized metal, horse-drawn, road-working scoop, with timber shafts is an example of those used in Moorabbin Shire in the late 1800s, and up until the 1940s for road-works, building dams, market-gardening work and other similar earthworks in the shire. The Box Cottage museum example would have been drawn by one horse, with the worker walking and steering the horse and scoop from behind using the timber shafts. There were even bigger metal scoops that required two or more horses to drag the scoop through the soil.Following the Dendy Special Survey 1841 allotments were sold to pioneer settlers who established market gardens in the Moorabbin area. Roads and roadside dams were needed as they transported both their stock and garden produce to markets in St Kilda and Melbourne By1880 the Shire of Moorabbin was using horse-drawn, road-working shovels on the main thoroughfares of the district.A medium sized metal, horse-drawn, road-working scoop, with timber shafts. Map, Melton Water Supply, Unknown
The development that had arguably the greatest impact in encouraging population growth in the shire during this period, was the establishment of a reliable water supply for the district. This had been a major concern of the local community for over 100 years, since the Melton township was first founded. Despite various schemes over the years to create a reliable water supply, the district was still dependent on bores, wells and tanks when the Melton Waterworks Trust was established in 1961 to address Melton’s water woes. With the opening of the Djerriwarrh Dam in December 1963, the shire’s residents finally had access to a reticulated water supply.Map shows the boundary of the area where the water will be serviced in the towncouncil -

Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Tool - Three Quarter Yard Scoop, Gaston & Sons, 1920
The Three Quarter Yard scoop was used to scrape out and relocate dirt. Early scoops would be dragged behind horses with the worker guiding direction. In later years scoops were attached to a tractor. The dragging collected dirt in the bucket, the bucket was then raised and the contents taken to be dumped. The scoop could also flatten earth. This scoop may have originally sat in a chassis with wheels and tow bar. Early agricultural photos of scoops show their use on Victorian farms in dam and road construction. The manufacturers are Gaston Bros who produced farming equipment in Kensington, Victoria until 1988. This particular scoop was recovered from a San Remo property.Scoop, three quarter yardGaston 3/4 Yardfarm machinery; scoop; horse drawn -

Souvenir - Tallangatta - Hume Weir Tiepin, 1980s
A wide range of items have been created as souvenirs to represent the Hume Weir on the Murray River. Work on Hume Dam started in 1919 and took 17 years to complete. Souvenir items have included chinaware, ashtrays, placemats and small jewellery items such as this tie pin. This tie pin was created as a souvenir for the town of Tallangatta. In the 1950s, the height of the Hume Weir wall was increased, resulting in a nine metre rise in the level of the water in Lake Hume. This necessitated the moving of most of the town of Old Tallangatta due to flooding. The transfer of the township by the State Rivers and Waters Supply Commission to a new site approximately 8 kilometres to the west was completed on 29 June 1956.This item is representative of many items commemorating the Hume Weir and the township of Tallangatta.A small metal and enamelled oval tie pin. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.1st Kew Scouts undertaking water rescue training at Bulleen. The photograph was most likely taken while the Scouts were camping beside the river one summer, with the programs generally including not only fun and games but also varying training activities. At the time many locals swam in the river. 1924 was well before the construction of major water storage dams and urbanisation of the upper reaches of the Yarra River, which significantly reduced downstream flows and water quality. These days, the Scouts tend to raft and canoe in the Yarra, rather than swim. On front: 1924. This shows the curving downstream face of the Spillway section taking shape, the bottom edge being the line of the contraction joint between the wall and the energy dissipater which has still to be built. Note the steam navvy at the end of the bit of curved work ready to take out the foundations for the energy dissipater. The tall concrete pillar is a portion of the work at the intersection of the main and south wing walls which was built in advance of the rest of the work to accommodate the tail tower of the cableway. The Tail Tower for the first stages of the work stood on the ground. Part of it is seen erected on the pillar while part of it is still in its original position. To command the concreting of the pillar end of the south wing wall a twin hoist tower of steel construction was erected at the end of the belt conveyor. This hoist is 160 feet high. The belt conveyor will at a later stage be raised for the concreting of the upper portion of the dam and the trestles are now being built up for that purpose. A drag line excavator with a 2 cubic yard capacity bucket is at work near the tail tower on the foundations for the south wing wall.
