NBC COMBINED SECOND-CLASS PASSENGER CAR AND GUARD'S VAN. Six cars, numbered 1-6, were built during 1898-1905 and originally classed NBDBD. The repeat of the 'BD' lettering in the classification signified that the vehicle was carried on bogie wheels. At the time the letter D was the letter code for Brakevans / Guard's Vans, but this was changed to C when the double-letter code was simplified in 1910. The letter C now being used to describe that a guards compartment was included in the bogie vehicle. On the narrow gauge, the vehicle numbers were retained. A final NBC numbered 7 was added to the fleet in 1910 Between 1926 and 1929 the cars were converted to autocoupler operation. 6NBC Used on the Upper Ferntree Gully, Wangaratta and Colac narrow gauge railways. Withdrawn from service 1951 and used as a workman's hut at Pakenham. The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. September 30,1945 - The official dedication service and unveiling of the Cenotaph at Tarakan War Cemetery The Battle of Tarakan was the first stage in the Borneo campaign of 1945. It began with an amphibious landing by Australian forces on 1 May, code-named Operation Oboe One. While the battle ended with success for the Allied forces over the Japanese defenders, this victory is generally regarded as having not justified its costs. 225 Australian soldiers of the 26th Brigade, 9th Division, 2nd Australian Imperial Force were once buried here. They were killed in the Battle of Tarakan (1 May - 21 June 1945) or died due to their wounds until 15 August 1945.The 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1996 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honour. This image shows motorbike despatch riders who were tasked with transporting intercepted Japanese communications from the wartime wireless receiving station established in Chesterville Road, Moorabbin to Queens Road, St Kilda where the Directorate of Naval Communications and the code-breaking unit called FRUMEL (Fleet Radio Unit - Melbourne) were housed. The despatch riders would travel every two hours, all day and night. The wireless receiving station was established in Moorabbin because it was considered an area free of significant electrical interference and was not too far afield from the Melbourne headquarters in Queens Road. Moorabbin was originally established as a rural market gardening community.A secret wartime wireless receiving station was established in March 1942 in Chesterville Road, Moorabbin. The station was established on requisitioned market garden properties, and soon housed WRAN (Women's Royal Australian Navy) personnel and up to 35 US Navy servicemen. The Navy personnel intercepted Japanese coded communications and then despatched these by motorbike riders to Queens Road, St Kilda where the Directorate of Naval Communications and the code-breaking unit called FRUMEL (Fleet Radio Unit - Melbourne) were housed. The information intercepted by the wireless receiving station helped shape the Allied response to Japan's advances in the Pacific. Declassified defence records show that this unprepossessing station handled some of World War II's most sensitive secrets, and the despatch riders were a familiar sight in the Moorabbin area, though few were aware of their purpose. The Heliograph MkV is a fascinating piece of historical surveying and communications equipment. It was primarily used for visual signaling by reflecting sunlight with a mirror to send coded messages over long distances. This method was primarily useful in remote areas where other forms of communication were not available. The MkV model, specifically, was widely used by the British Army and other military forces from around 1906 until the mid 1960s. It remained in use with the Australian Army Survey Corps until the mid 1980s. The device typically included a 5 - inch mirror and was often mounted on a tripod for stability. Initially the instrument was used to communicate between survey stations using Morse code to coordinate their activities. Later when better forms of communication were available they were used for precise angle alignment where the sunlight reflection from the mirror was targeted between the survey stations to give very accurate results. The MkV was relatively light weight and portable, making it ideal for use in the field. It could be setup and adjusted quickly. The heliograph had an adjustable mirror that could be tilted to reflect sunlight towards a distant receiver. Surveyors could align the mirror using a sighting device. Whilst it was primarily used by the Military it was also used in civil surveying particularly in the remote areas of Australia. This instrument was used as a training aid to help teach surveyors at the Royal Australian Survey Corps School of Military Survey. This cigarette case was made from the plexiglass windscreen of a Japanese Mitsubishi Zero aircraft. Whilst its maker is unknown, its inscription, “Tarakan May 1st 1945” suggests that it was created during the Battle of Tarakan. Tarakan was a small, oil-rich island off the coast of Borneo which in 1945 was held by the Japanese. The battle, code named Operation Oboe One, began when Australian forces landed on May 1st 1945, and continued until June 21st. 240 Australians died during the conflict. The term ‘Trench art’ describes objects made from the debris and by-products of warfare. Reasons for making trench art varied, from creating mementos of battles to passing time or mitigating the effects of warfare. This object has historic significance at a national level due to its association with World War Two. As an example of trench art, it makes an important contribution to our understanding of Australian soldiers’ experience of the war. This object is an example of skilled craftsmanship and has artistic and aesthetic significance due to its detailed engraving of a beach scene. Prior to the Second World War Tarakan Island was part of the Dutch East Indies and an important oil-producing centre. In early 1942 it was occupied by the Japanese. The primary objective for the Allied attack on Tarakan (code-named "Oboe One") was to secure and develop the island's airstrip so that it could be used to provide air cover for subsequent landings in Brunei, Labuan and Balikpapan. The secondary objective for the operation was to secure Tarakan's oilfields and bring them into operation as a source of oil for the Allied forces. As part of the 26th Brigade the 2/24 Battalion landed at Tarakan on May1 1945. The task of capturing Tarakan's airstrip was assigned to the 2/24th Battalion. Stawell Post Office on corner of Wimmera and Main Streets. Erected 1875. Telegraph pole and streetlamp in foreground. Akins store visible at right of photo. The building has 3 arched doors & 6 arched windows on the ground floor and 8 square windows on the top story. Two chimneys on the roof and a wrought iron square fence on the roof. The outside of the building has not changed while the interior has been remodelled several times. The early Postmasters and their families lived upstairs. The main room originally included the Telegraph office where operators worked at machines, sending and receiving Morse code messages. Later alterations were made for a telephone switchboard room downstairs, with trunk line equipment upstairs. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. Booklet produced in 1940 for members of the 2nd AIF by the Australian Comforts Fund Victorian Division.
