Photograph shows approx 20 uniformed drivers and conductors standing in front of 4 tramcars protruding from tram shed. The trams would be single truck, possibly R classes. The destination on the closest car appears to read "Race Course". Staff are all dressed in the first uniform of the M&MTB including caps and tunics with silver or brass buttons up to the neck. The location is the first Preston Depot opposite the future Preston Workshops. This depot and tramways were built by the Fitzroy, Northcote and Preston Tramways Trust but taken over by the M&MTB in 1920 before operations began. THE MILL HOUSE- Albert Street, Tatura.|Reilly®s Flour Mill operated in Tatura from 1880 to 1965. The mill was demolished in 1966. James Reilly emigrated from County Cork, Ireland, spent two years on a family farm at Fitzroy, another two years at a mill at Kilmore, and then to Murchison to build a mill. Some of his family came to Tatura to build a mill. The house was built for members of the family to live in at various times. After the mill was demolished the house remained as a residence on about the only hill in Tatura. In the late 1970®s, early 1980®s a doctor added several upstairs rooms, then in the late 1990®s the house was used as a bed and breakfast. This ceramic mug is titled "Bill Bogong's Mug" in honour of one of Australia's Scouting (Rovers) notable office holders, Mr.W.F."Bill" Waters. He was born on 22nd August 1897 in Taralgon, Victoria, Australia and died 8th October 1968 in Fitzroy, Victoria. He was instrumental in the Rovers building two chalets in the Victorian Alps. The Victorian Award of the National Rover Service Award(1980) has been named after Bill Waters. Bill Waters was also the leader of the first team that climbed Mount Bogong in winter in 1929. Also was part of rescue team of what is now know as the Cleve Cole tragedy on Mt Bogong in the mid 1930's. There is also a water fall named after him Waters Falls on the Bogong High Plains. W.F."Bill" Waters aka "Bill Bogong" (Bogong mountain, were his ashes were scattered), was not only a prominent bush walker (Melbourne Walking Club) of the high country (Victorian Alps) but was instrumental in establishing two Chalets. One of these Chalets was the first one to be built on the Bogong High Plains. This item, "Bill Bogong's Mug" is what the Flinders Petrie(famous English Egyptologist/Archaelogist) Rover Crew(formed in 1940) presented newly invested members of the exclusive(200 membership) Alpine Rover Crew. The Melbourne Walking Club has a long history with the Victorian High Plains area, of which the Kiewa Valley is an integral part of the Victorian Alpine Region. Due to the connections Bill Waters has with the Bogong High Plains and Mt Bogong this cup has a lot of significance to the social history of the area.. Program of a 5-day festival held 27/2/1926 - 6/3/1926 to raise funds for the Bush Fire Relief Fund, Soldiers' Memorial Hall, St Vincent's Hospital and the Catani Memorial (St Kilda cenotaph). The carnival began with a procession from what is now St Kilda Junction, down Fitzroy Street to Luna Park and the Lower Esplanade. Events included novelty races and contests including pillow-fighting, a paddling race where contestants had to balance on kerosene tins, a cigarette race where competitors raced with lighted cigarettes, and many other contests at the beach. There were also swimming events, boat races, lifesaving demonstrations, displays, music and dancing.
