Archive (Series) - ROBERTSON, Dr. Edward
Various PartiesReference, Research, InformationArranged by Secondary Values (value of records to users)Dr. Edward Robertson (1870-1969) was a English-Scottish medical practitioner that moved to Kew from his birth place of Benalla. After completing high school at Wesley College, he would go on to study medicine at the University of Melbourne, eventually moving to Edinburgh to complete the course. After qualification, he studied public health at King’s College in London, then earning a Diploma at Cambridge. He would become a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1901, and at the Royal Institute of Public Health in 1902. Edward would become engaged in the Victorian Department of Public Health, working within the Victorian government in the health sector until 1937. This would most notably involve a 24-year stint as the Head of the Victorian State Health Department, between 1913 until his retirement. He would oversee the reaction to the Spanish Flu epidemic, being largely responsible for much of the emergency services that would come into fruition to treat the state during this time. He would later study in the United States, which helped to inform him of amendments to be made to sections of the Health and Pure Foods Acts and would take part in many Commonwealth and State conferences. He would also serve as chairman for the Fourth Commonwealth and State conference on uniform standards for food and drugs. Additionally, he had roles in many institutes and councils throughout Australia. In his retirement, he would also write a comprehensive history on Boroondara that included extensive research on the settlement and early pioneers of the area, as well as an emphasis on the Studley Park Bridge. The file includes: Edward’s handwritten notes on the history of Boroondara, copies and compilations of these notes, correspondences from Edward Robertson and members of his family, and a short biography of Edward’s life.dr. edward robertson – kew (vic.), edward robertson – kew (vic.), victorian state health department – kew (vic.)dr. edward robertson – kew (vic.), edward robertson – kew (vic.), victorian state health department – kew (vic.) -

Photograph - Digital Photograph, Kew Mental Hospital, William Beattie Smith, 1899-1902, c.1972
... to the archives of the relevant Victorian Government Department and also ...The Kew Lunatic Asylum was completed in 1871 and opened in 1872. The year 1972 marked its centenary. Over the years, members of staff at the asylum collected records, photographs, publications and plans of the asylum, later hospital. The Society has a number of important collections relating to the asylum and the Children's Cottages. These include the Dr Cliff Judge, the Irena Higgins and the Dr Fred Stamp Collections. This portrait photograph is one of a number of items donated by the family of the late Dr. Fred Stamp who was the last medical superintendent. Dr Frederick Stamp graduated from Bristol Medical School (UK) in 1968. He and his family emigrated to Australia in 1977 to Goulburn (NSW), moving to Melbourne in 1980. He became Superintendent in 1981 until the Hospital's closure in 1988. Since the donation was made, this item has been declared a Permanent Government Record, and has been transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria in 2020.Following their closure, the medical records of the Kew Mental Hospital and the Children's Cottages Kew were relocated to the archives of the relevant Victorian Government Department and also to the Public Records Office of Victoria. Other collections, such as the Fred Stamp Collection, were assembled by staff who worked at the hospital. The years leading up to the closure of Kew must have been fraught, and many of the items in the hospital were probably destined for hard waste disposal. Dr. Fred Stamp, the medical superintendent, kept aside or rescued a number of these items, of which this is one. Following his death, his family donated these to the Kew Historical Society. The Society recognises these items to be of lasting historical significance, essentially due to their provenance and to their rarity. Together they (and the Judge and Higgins Collections) are an invaluable aid for researchers of the treatment of psychiatric illnesses in Victoria.William Beattie Smith, Medical Superintendent, Kew Lunatic Asylum 1899-1902. One of a series of portraits of former medical superintendents, sourced and created for exhibition purposes at the Kew Mental Hospital during the centenary celebrations of 1972. Painting - Painting of Airey's Inlet by Charles Bush, Bush, Charles, Airey's Inlet, c1800
The large landscape of Airey’s Inlet was painted by the renowned Australian artist Charles Bush. It is a view of Airey’s Inlet, a small seaside town on the Great Ocean Road, about 120km southwest of Melbourne. Airey’s Inlet is one of the oldest settlements on this part of the Victorian coast. It derives its name from John Airey, who took up a pastoral lease at Point Roadknight, slightly to the east, in 1839. The landscape is painted in oil on board. The view depicted looks over the inlet and Painkalac Creek towards the Split Point lighthouse, built in 1891. There is a yacht sailing on the inlet, and figures on the path in the middle distance. In the left foreground is a painter at an easel, probably Bush’s longtime companion and fellow artist Phyl Waterhouse. The picture is framed, and measures 105 x 136cm overall. It was probably painted in the early 1950s. A brass plaque attached to the frame records that it is the gift of W.E.A. Hughes-Jones, a member of the Court of Examiners from 1952 to 1962. Artist Charles Bush (1919-1989) was born in the inner Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy on 23 November 1919. After attending high school in Coburg, he entered the National Gallery of Victoria art school in 1934 and studied under W.B. McInnes. He enlisted in 1940, and was appointed an official war artist from 1943 to 1946. In 1950 he won a British Council travel grant which enabled him to go on a study tour of Great Britain and Europe. A versatile and gifted artist, he won many prizes and awards throughout his career. He was equally at home in many genres of painting and drawing, but he excelled at portraits and landscapes. He died in Melbourne in November 1989.ARTISTS SIGNATURE BOTTOM RIGHT "BUSH"airey’s inlet, charles bush, w.e.a. hughes-jones
