Photograph - Building Lodge at Bogong 1949 - 1950
These photos are part of the Fred Griffith Collection. Frederick Charles “Fred” Griffith was born in Albury, NSW on 2 March 1910. Educated in Albury and Geelong Grammar. Beginning in 1927 he spent many years working first as a jackeroo and on a range of prominent pastoral and merino stud properties in NSW and Queensland. In 1935 he repurchased his former family property “Toonallook", Bowna, NSW and developed it to be the largest Romney Marsh stud in the world, exporting rams to Argentina. He introduced many innovative practices on his property including rabbit control measures and aerial crop dusting. He was an active member of the Albury Show Society and in 1949 established the Albury Sheep Show. Fred was also the Albury representative on the Graziers’ Association Council for over 30 years. He became a life member of both the Albury and Commercial Clubs. Fred’s greatest hobby was snow skiing. His first visit to the snow was to Kosciusko in 1919. The Albury Ski Club was formed in 1935 and Fred was an inaugural member. In 1949 they were granted a site at Falls Creek to build their own lodge. Fred guaranteed the Club for finance from the Bank of NSW. The first portion of the prefabricated building was constructed in Albury. It was transported to Falls Creek on the back of Fred’s truck and erected in one day. This was the bathroom section and the rest was completed in 1950. The original lodge was burned down in 1952 and a new one built the following year. In 1955, Fred also built the Bowna Lodge for his family in partnership with David Fairbairn. He became head of the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A.) and successfully applied to run the Australian Ski Championships. Fred also inaugurated children’s races at Falls Creek and ran them for about 20 years. He also formed the company “Falls Creek Ski Tows”. In 1956 Fred along with a group of key people selected the site for Thredbo Village. Fred and his brother sold Toonallook in sections between 1951 and 1974. He moved to Albury and set up as a landscape gardener and fencing contractor. After a serious work accident, Fred retired in 1985 and moved to Rosebud, Victoria where he died on 19 August 1992.These images record a working bee to build the lodge at Bogong, VictoriaA set of black and white photographs showing the construction of the lodge at Bogong Christmas and New Year 1949/1950 On back of photos. Programme, Annual ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students, 1995
A circular sent to Victorian schools informing them about the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students", held in April each year. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. It mentions the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. The programme is labeled a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. Each ceremony was attended by the Governor of Victoria, in 1995 it was Sir Richard McGarvie.A record of a ceremony at the Shrine for school students.Printed brochure x 3 of the student Anzac ceremony with a photo of the Shrine and a rainbow, single page folded into 3. Photograph - Photo, Launch of Legacy Week - 3rd September 1990 - Aviation art exhibition, 1990
Launch of Legacy Week in 1990 included an exhibition of Aviation Art at Legacy House. Paintings were by Frank Harding of Renmark, South Australia. A newspaper article published on 23 August 1990, mentions that Frank Harding had painted over 50 paintings of aircraft flown by Australians and published a book of the images. It was called 'They flew for the King'. Each painting had been extensively researched to capture a specific moment in the World War 2 combat career of various pilots, flight officers or bomb-aimers. His aim was to honour the fine efforts of these great individuals. Unfortunately the artist died a few weeks after the exhibition and launch of his book. Guests included Bud Tingwell, who flew for the RAAF in World War 2 and other RAAF personnel. It appears to have included a heritage display from the Royal Australian Air Force Museum at the same time. The article is at 01522 also see media release at 01521, more photos of the paintings and guests are in 01524. In 1990 the slogan was "Lest YOU forget" with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Was in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1987 to 1991.An example of an art exhibition being held at Legacy House to promote Legacy during Legacy week in 1990.Colour photo x 6 of an art exhibition for Legacy Week in 1990.legacy week, paintings, planes, warplanes, promotion -

Poster, Australia Remembers. Legacy never forgets, 1995
This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Legacy invited the leading guitarists, Phil and Tony Emmanuel to be Personality of the Year in 1995. They helped to promote Legacy, especially during Badge Week (see 00838). They were chosen as their father had served in the Air Force in New Guinea. When he died Legacy helped support their mother and her 6 children. They were releasing a new album in 1995, 'Terra Firma' and Legacy was given a special mention at each concert in Australia. Their album also featured a song called "The Last Post" which was dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives in times of war to keep Australia free. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). Was in a folder with marketing material from the 1990s to 2009, see items 01240 to 01258. The collection shows the types of marketing materials that were produced and the celebrities that were helping Legacy. An example of promotional material from the 1990s. Document - Report, The 72nd Report from the President - 1995, 1995
In 1995 Legacy was promoted by a tram painted with 'Legacy never forgets' as part of the "Australia Remembers 1945-1995" program marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2. The president was David Millie and his report covers disabled dependents and the activities of widows clubs. The report also recaps events through the year such as the school students' Anzac commemoration service, legacy week and the public speaking contest. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. Photograph - Widows function, Widows Christmas Concert at Melbourne Town Hall 1995, 1995
A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The RAAF Central Band played for many years. Held in December each year. The photos show President Millie presenting flowers to Inez Bruce, Gwen Gunn and Irene Noll. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $21,000 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 1,800 widows came together for the concert despite the rain and bad weather. The RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. Graham Lloyd, and Ivor Lloyd (ex POW from Changi) and singer Lisa Hugo also performed. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall, held in December each year.
