Robert Harper & Co had an industrial complex on Beach Rd from Sandridge lagoon to Post Office Place. A wide variety of goods were produced including rice, starch, spices, cocoa, flour, spices, oatmeal, jelly crystals. Most of the complex was demolished around 1980 but some buildings have been transofmed into apartment blocks.Digital copy of Black and White photo mounted on card with the words "Harpers Picnic 1908" written below. Arthur John Faram was a Real Estate Agent and Auctioneer in South Melbourne. He was married to Caroline Crook Faram and they had children Jack, Herbert, George, Louisa, Dick, Frank, Tom and Alice. Arthur died in 1914. The photo was taken on 'Oxi' Day 28 October 1951 which is commemorated throughout Greece and Cyprus and world-wide Greek communities. The day commemorates the rejection by the Greek prime minister, Ioannis Metaxas of the ultimatum presented to him by the Italian ambassador on the 28 October 1940 to allow the Axis forces, namely Italy, Germany and Bulgaria to occupy strategic locations of Greece or face war. From the outset the Ithacan Philanthropic held at least one family picnic a year. They either took place at a popular seaside locations or at popular picnic sites in the nearby hills around Melbourne. The first annual picnic was held in 1918. The Ithacan Greeks worked long hours in family food and restaurant businesses in Melbourne. On Sundays the shops were closed so it was seen as an opportunity to relax outdoors away from the city. It was a chance for families and friends to meet together in a relaxed atmosphere where races were also organised for all age groups. The first picnic took place in 1918 at South Morang where 200 people attended. The photo is taken of the Northern Ithaca Platrethia school in 1932. Compulsory school education was introduced to Ithaca and the other Ionian Islands during the second half of the nineteenth century resulting in children gaining a basic education in literacy and numeracy.
