Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.A record of the displays at the Annual Demonstrations. Nothing Rhymes with Ngapartji follows the journey of acclaimed Pitjantjatjara actor Trevor Jamieson, as he returns to his traditional country to perform his hit stage show Ngapartji Ngapartji to an all-Indigenous audience in the remote Australian Aboriginal community of Ernabella, South Australia. Nothing Rhymes with Ngapartji is a film about performing a multi-faceted drama to audiences who speak different languages, who are of different cultures and who have varying expectations. Offers an insight into Indigenous perspectives on the consequences of white settlement for Aboriginal cultures. In presenting the material in both Pitjantjatjara and English, it raises the important issue of stories needing to be told in languages that are central to different Australians' understanding of the world. The former Christopher Crisp residence was constructed in 1868 by William Watson, one of the members of the Bacchus Marsh Express printing company which took over the management of The Express after the first edition, 7 July 1866, was published by its founder, George Lane, a book binder. This syndicate failed after three months and the ownership was then taken over by Christopher Crisp, a compositor working for the company. Crisp remained the editor from 1866 to his death in 1915, when he was succeeded by his son, also called Christopher Crisp, and later by his grandson. Under the Crisp family leadership, The Express widened its readership and was subscribed to by influential men and public servants in Melbourne. (Heritage Victoria Council. Places. Entry no. 45.)Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The photograph is of a single-storey cottage of rendered brick and sandstone with a shingled roof of slate tiles and ornate concave verandah. A chimney stands at either end of the house. A carved barge board decorates the northern end of the hip roof. A skillion with windows and a chimney adjoins the rear of the cottage. The front facade is symmetrical with two sash windows placed either side of the central door. A wire fence runs along the front of the cottage. Standing at the gate is a formally dressed gentleman wearing a top hat. A young child is standing on the road. This child is possibly Christopher Crisp, Jnr., who later took over the role of editor of the Bacchus Marsh Express in 1915 on the death of his father. The Stony Creek Trestle Bridge was built in 1916 when the existing rail line from Melbourne to Bairnsdale was extended to Orbost. This 97km Bairnsdale to Orbost extension through rugged terrain was reputed to have been the most difficult rail project undertaken in Victoria. In service for over 60 years the bridge was damaged by bushfire in 1980, with the last train crossing in 1987. At 247m long and 20m high, it is the largest standing bridge of its kind in the State, and is listed on the Register of Historic Sites. Built of red ironbark and grey box timber, it is a fine example of the early engineering skills that utilised the resources and materials found on site. (More information Newsletter July 2013)Built during the period 1914-16, of Gippsland Grey Box and Red Ironbark, the Stoney Creek bridge on the East Gippsland Railway is a fine example of early engineering skilll , being constructed without the aid of any of the modern machinery available today. The P.S Adelaide had been displayed in the Hopwood Gardens from 1960. In 1984 The City of Echuca decided to put the paddle steamer back in the river. This happened over several weeks and involved digging a boat ramp into the bank in front of the Hopwood Gardens. This involved a lot of skill and people. It also attracted a lot of attention. Crowds gathered every day to watch the task. In this photograph the P.S Pevensey in the foreground still has the name P.S Philadelphia writing on its name plate. The P.S Pevensey was used in the TV Series 'All The Rivers Run', as the P.S Philadelphia. Relates to a series of images Reg. nos. P000059.3, P000061.3, P000062.2, P000063.3, P000070.2, P000071.The re-floating of the P.S Adelaide is significant because it occurred at a time when the Tourist Industry was gathering momentum in Echuca. The City of Echuca made the decision to add another paddle steamer to its fleet to carry passengers on the Murray River. The P.S Adelaide is one of the oldest, still operative wooden hulled paddle steamers in the world. It celebrated it's 150th birthday in July 2016. The re-floating of the P.S Adelaide created a lot of attention locally and regionally.A rectangular coloured photograph, and enlargement photograph, of the P.S. RAEME Corps was first established in 1942 when the Ordnance Corps and the Service Corps were combined. The royal ascent was granted in 1948. Ref: www.raeme.org.au The Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) is a technical corps tasked with the maintenance of the Army's modern hardware and equipment. RAEME personnel are represented in most Army units, with the representation varying in size from one or two tradespersons, to small groups of 20 to 30 tradespersons, to large maintenance units with over 150 personnel and a totally integrated military and civilian workforce. Stokes was established in 1856 by a young English die-sinker named Thomas Stokes, who had arrived from England duringthe gold rush of that era. Disappointment in the fields led him to Melbourne where he setup business as a diesinker producing medals, tokens, buttons and silverware, a skill he acquired over five dedicated years of apprenticeship which he had completed in Birmingham, England. A merger with G.F Martin in 1867 saw the firm introduce electroplated nickel silver to Australia. The banking crisis of the 1890’s saw a split with Martin and the gradual joining of Thomas Stokes’ three sons, and by 1911 the company was called Thomas Stokes and Sons. Under the heading 'Ballarat Technical School' the words 'a division of the School of Mines' has been whited out. The Coat of Arms was attached to the door of the Ballarat Junior Technical School (later used as Prospects Restaurant) Latin inscriptions: Ingenio effodere Opes - with skill to dig out wealth Scientia Laboris Coadjutrix - knowledge the handmaiden of labour Around 1913 a foundation student from the Ballarat Junior Technical School, Angus Henderson, won a competition to design a monogram for the school. At that time the school was situated at the Dana Street Primary School. This design remained the official insignia for about 40 years. Angus Henderson became a renowned Ballarat signwriter. The shrouds or fore-rigging are a part of the standing rigging on a sailing ship. They are used in pairs on each side of a ship to help hold the masts in place and to aid the sailors who climb the rigging. They are part of the basic framework for the sails. Larger vessels may have two or three pairs, and some ships may have upper and lower shrouds. The upper shrouds would be fixed to a protruding structure on the top of the masts so that they hung from the right angle. The ropework skills of the sailmaker would be used to create the shrouds, choosing fibres with properties suitable for the job at hand and creating the triangular shape carefully. Deadeyes and ropes were then used to attach the shrouds to the ship's structure.This shroud is an example of a part of the standing rigging of a sailing ship. A temporary artwork by Lead On Ballarat was installed in a carpark at the Ballarat Library from 2013-2020. Art Streetz Murals was an initiative of Lead On Ballarat’s, “Take Back the Streets” art program and the City of Ballarat. The project was funded under the Graffiti Prevention and Removal Grants, part of the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program. The aim of the project was for the young people involved to develop their skills, ideas and designs with assistance from the ‘Lead Artist’ Pauline O'Shannessy-Dowling. The artwork was created through a number of workshops, planning and design sessions. Headwear - Brown Fur Hat, 1960s
Fur hats were a necessary accoutrement for fashionable women who wore furs. Typically, the fur hat might be purchased from the furrier to match the colour and often the pelt of the coat or stole, rather than from a milliner. Hats, like coats and stoles were often dyed to achieve uniformity of colour. Tastes in the colour of furs also changed over time, so hats, coats and stoles could be updated to match prevailing tastes. Until the 1960s in Australia, there were many furriers, who usually brought from Europe experience in identifying fur types. With the decline in the fur industry, these skills are noticeably scarcer in Australia today.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women. There are however a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. More slides from the 1960 demonstration are catalogued separately. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A membership certificate for Derithe Ames, a junior legatee in 1955. The text says 'During War many men offer themselves for Service in the Forces of the Empire. It is the obligation of Legacy to assist the children of those who fell, or who have since died. Junior Legatee was the term used for the children of deceased servicemen that Legacy took into their care. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics. Their skills were showcased in the Annual Demonstration. The certificate shows there were prizes and recognition for achievements. Button distributed to and worn by Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) members. The ANF has been campaigning for more funding and qualified nurses to improve the quality of aged care for the past several decades, and continues to do so. The 'Aged care nurses worth more not less' campaign was run throughout 2005-2006 during private aged care enterprise bargaining negotiations. Claims focused on unsafe staffing levels and an inadequate skill mix of registered and unregistered staff. The Royal Australian Nursing Federation became the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) in 1989, and then became the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation in 2013, suggesting this badge is from the 1990s or early 2000s.Circular pink and black plastic badge. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. A photo of a group of female junior legatees in sporting outfits. There are 20 girls of various ages, and 1 lady who could be the instructor. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00873) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. A note with the photo identifies two young ladies; "Kneeling at the front Michelle and Anne O'Connor. Uniform, Girls Uniform
A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations.
