Grampians Halls Gap (Barney’s Castle). Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. In 1880 a branch line from Stawell Railway Yards was built to Heatherly Quarry, to carry stone for part of Parliament House Melbourne, the GPO in Elizabeth St, the Harbour Trust buildings, additions to the Melbourne Town Hall, the Stawell Courthouse Patrick Street and the Stawell Catholic Church in Patrick St. The line was taken over by the Railways Department in June 1905 and was closed in March 1949. It has since been removed but remnants of the machinery and buildings are visible at the quarry site. stawell

Fountain Head Brewery Armstrong's. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. The brewery, a three-storey high building, was established close to two streams which joined the Concongella Creek near Armstrong, although the water required to run the brewery was obtained from a natural underground spring which is still visible. Further findings of Gold in Victoria around 1859-1860 brought a large rush of miners to the area. Some stayed on to become merchants, farmers, etc. Jens Kofoed, a shipwright from the Netherlands, was one who came to the area at this time. He and his family move to Armstrong in 1860, establishing the Fountain Head Brewery, which employed quite a number of people for about 40 years. stawell industry

Allanvale Home Station. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. Allanvale was taken up about 1841 by John Allen, who was the son of George Allan of Allanvale, near Launceston in Van Diemen's Land. He selected 80,000 acres between present day Stawell and Ararat. The property was gradually reduced in size, with the first split occurring in the 1840s with the annexation of Concongella Selection due to a land dispute. J.S. Davidson was the occupier of Allanvale at the time this photograph was taken. The homestead pictured here was destroyed by fire at the end of the First World War and replaced by a new building around 1923. The present owners of Allanvale are the Kilpatrick family A note on the Allan family. On the 15th of March 1845, John Allen's 26 year old wife died at the birth of their third child, a daughter, who also died several weeks later. Elizabeth Allen had been a dear friend of Mrs Horatio Wills of neighbouring Lexington station. Eliza and her daughter were buried side by side in the garden of Lexington homestead. It is taken from Church Hill in front of the then Church of England. This would have been at what is now about 27 Seaby Street. Note: the Pleasant Creek Courthouse about centre of the picture. Telegraph Office Pleasant Creek Stawell. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. The first post was office was erected at Commercial Street, Pleasant Creek in the goldfields, in June 1858, by J Harding and was a portable one. In October 1860 the first permanent Telegraph Office was erected by Cormick and Irvine for £329. In the same month the Post Office was removed from Commercial St in the Goldfields to the rear of the Telegraph office in Stawell. In February 1862 Edmond Johnson was appointed manager of Electrical Telegraph, Collector of Imposts and acting Postmaster. This building was later used as a private dwelling. It is situated in Lesley Street at the rear of the Pleasant Creek Courthouse although the right-hand wing has been removed. stawell

Court House and Cells Pleasant Creek Stawell. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. The first courthouse was built at Pleasant Creek Stawell by William Scobie for the sum of £1975 in September 1858. A further sum of £1832 was spent on the building by J. Francis in January 1860. Pleasant Creek Court House was used as a court of Petty sessions, County Court, Court of Mines, and a Court of General Sessions before the newer Stawell Court House in Patrick Street was built. Bull & Mouth Hotel Main Street Stawell Built 1907. Photo c1921 with cars in front. The original wooden Hotel was built by Dawkin & Hickory in 1863. George Dawkin had the first license. It had 4 bedrooms and two sitting rooms. John Hunter had the license from 1876 to 1889 when he died. During this time it boasted 16 rooms with commodious premises. In 1907 when owned by H. Edhouse of Bryant & Co Brewery the old wooden building was pulled down and a new one erected. Tenders for this were in the vicinity of 2000 pounds. After the rebuilding Mary Oliver held a license from 1908 until 1921. Like most hotels it changed hands many times and was finally demolished to make way for a car park for Earles Supermarket in 1985. Two story brick Hotel with group of ladies on top verandah. Foresters Hotel was built in 1868 by Mr. Joseph Cawley, Mr. and Mrs. Cawley were the occupants for 30 years. The site was previously occupied by a Billiards Room. In 1917 the building became Foresters Coffee Palace with new owner Mr. J.C. Crothers who purchased the building for 410 pounds and leased it to Mr. Robert Wennerbom. The next lease holder was Miss Fulton and in 1921 Mrs. R. Claringbold took over and called the building Foresters House. The building was sold in 1935 and demolished shortly after sale. This scene was taken in 1866 in Main Street from in front of Joyce’s Iberian Hotel on the left, the site of the present townhall. It is looking uphill and eastward with Big Hill in the far background. The Hibernian Hotel was built on Commercial Street Pleasant Creek Goldfields in 1858 and was moved to Main Street Reefs, the present site of the Town Hall by Mr. & Mrs. Joyce. Street Scene - Wakeham Street and Seaby Street (Provincial Hotel) 1997 Provincial Hotel built in 1877 by Mr. Allingham who leased it to Mr. J. Reading. The licensee being held by T.S. Cranston. An advert in 1878 stated 20 good rooms beside out rooms, competent to bed from 40 to 50 persons. Also Billiard and commercial rooms. De licensed in 1916. Main Street Looking West. Kays Star Hotel c1907 The Star Hotel had a chequered life. Like a number of other hotels it started life on Commercial Street Pleasant Creek, the first License being held by Mr. William Francis in 1858. It was shifted to Main Street Quartz Reefs in 1860 and had many tenants over a long period. For many years it stood in the centre of the roadway in Main Street and had to be moved to give more room for traffic. It is one of the reasons we have a bend in the Main Street. As a Hotel it had 54 years without a conviction against it. Although it had many licensees it was owned by one family for the last 27 years of its life as a Hotel. It was delicensed in 1916 because it was too close to the Albion which was a better building. Currently (2025) occupied by the Stawell Club and is licensed. Some horse driven Whims can be seen in the background above the Assembly Hall. This hotel was built right among the mines in upper Main Street. The first licence was held by William Pond in 1858. Robert Young in 1859 and John Steele in 1861. Four Posts Inn. Glenorchy built about 1841 by John Gleeson on the Wimmera River at Glenorchy. Building no longer exists as burnt down in 1944. Located on the site now known as Glenorchy (Victoria). Glenorchy is approximately 20Km from the former Ashen's pastoral run occupied by Dugald McPherson. The Four post Inn was a "Staging Camp" for the police escort route during the transportation of gold by road from Mount Alexander gold fields (Bendigo) to Adelaide South Australia in 1852-53. The police escort is known to have called in at Ashens homestead to visit Dugald McPherson. The Four Post Inn was the scene on the occasion of and encounter between the police escort and bushrangers. At a later date The Four Post Inn was a staging camp for the horse drawn coach service between Stawell and Horsham.Small weatherboard building with no verandah and tree blocking the view. Pines. Royal Mail Hotel Glenorchy 1863-1870. In 1862 John Meredith let a contract to Candy & Giles to build this hotel. It was a large brick building and elaborately furnished and had most expensive accommodation. It was opened with a Dinner and Grand Ball in 1863. W.B. Court House Hotel. Patrick St. Stawell. Thomas Crerar built this hotel opposite the Court House in Patrick Street in 1879. The first license was from that year until 1884 by Elizabeth Cowman. The final license was held by Margery Bonetia Phillips from 1903 to 1909. It was closed by the Licensing Board 3/5/1909. Post Office Hotel opened on March 31st 1875. The first licensee was granted to H.W. Richards who held it for 3 years. Some other long running licensees were Adam Holbing 1885-1892, Mrs S.B. Whitty to 1901, Elizabeth Kyhat to 1944, Harry Kuhl , 1955-1967. When Harry died, Roy West 1967-1970 when the license was surrendered. The building is now a shopping arcade.
