This is a docket issued by the firm of Cramond and Dickson, probably to the Warrnambool Club. John Cramond and James Dickson established their general store in Warrnambool in 1855 and was a major business in Warrnambool (firstly in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street) until 1973. A branch of the business was opened in London about 1868. This docket is of interest as an example of the business dealings of the Liebig Street store of Cramond and Dickson, an important business in Warrnambool for over 100 years, This is a docket from a pad or book, sent by Cramond and Dickson to an unknown customer. It probably was duplicated using carbon paper. The paper is yellowing with black printed ruled lines, other red and black printing, a ‘paid’ stamp that is illegible and an image in red printing of the Cramond and Dickson store. This painting shows a historic depiction of Australian whalers in action at sea, and shows the scale of man to whale. Whaling was one of the first industries in early Victoria. John Dollery was born in London in 1933. As a child he loved to draw and was a frequent visitor to the National and Tate Galleries. In 1957 Dollery came to Australia, settling in Queensland in 1965. After receiving a prize in a drawing exhibition, he began painting in oils, and is entirely self-taught. Whilst in Queensland he painted most of his canvases strictly from life and in 1977 he moved to Melbourne where he established himself as a full-time artist. John was very interested in Australia’s history, and most of his work represents this theme. Many of his pieces are in collections both in Australia and overseas. Dollery’s daughter is also an artist and has exhibited both her father's and her own works together in an exhibition 'Now and Then, Father and Daughter'.The painting is a significant work by artist John Dollery. Its subject of whaling shows an early Australian industry and shows the scale of man to whale. The decorative frame is appropriate for the era in which the scene would have taken place.Painting in oil on canvas, in gilt carved timber frame. Seascape, depicting a whale hunt. A spouting whale is behind a whale boat with six whalers aboard. A tall ship with seamen aboard is behind the whale. Two other tall ships and another whale boat are in background. Robin Boyd’s desk cupboard contained two exercise books (D482.1-D482.2) and assorted articles, essays and other material regarding Sydney Opera House (P1378.01-P1378.36, D179-D181, D479-D480), inserted inside the front cover of Walkabout Magazine July 1966 (P1377). Robin Boyd asked Mandie Eckersley (nee Boyd), his eldest daughter, to research the Sydney Opera House for him in the Mitchell Library, both before and after Utzon left. Robin was writing a book, but was very disillusioned with the way the entire saga unfolded. Mandie Boyd recalls: “It was a huge task because he wanted any mention at all in any publications to be noted. Black and white photograph of Coach and Horses Hotel in Maroondah Highway, west of New Street, now adjacent to Eastlink Freeway, on northern side. There are two duplicate photos. Certainly the photo was taken post-1940 as the previous Coach & Horses Hotel, on the south side, burnt down in 1940. The telephone pole indicates that era, with limited lines. The style of the building was Art Deco that generally existed in the 1920s-1930s but did continued in Australia in the 1940s. The building has the appearance of being newly-built. Was H4, in the old cataloguing system.
