This beaker (tumbler) was presented to the Faculty in 1977 by Professor Arthur Bull, as a token of esteem and friendship, from the Faculty of Anaesthetists College of Medicine of South Africa. It was in this year that Professor Bull was also awarded an honorary fellowship from ANZCA. Professor Arthur Barclay Bull was a pioneer of South African Anaesthesia, having played a major role in the specialty and research in anaesthesia from 1954. One of his achievements include the use of prolonged curarisation and IPPV for treating tetanus. In 1965 - 1967 the Taurus Blood Warmer was developed - named after Professor Bull - to prevent hypothermia after major blood transfusion. Not only was Professor Bull the presenter of this beaker, but also its maker. It is hand wrought from sterling silver recovered from discarded tracheostomy tubes. The maker has hallmarked the beaker with the initials A B. These were used for pressing the fruit in cocktails. The one with the twisted handle is a copy of the Christophe muddler. The makers mark WP B tells us that this was made in Birmingham, England but a fire destroyed many of the makers marks information so it is not possible to identify the actual maker.3 metal muddlers. William Jackson (588 - 17th Battalion, B Company) embarked from Sydney onboard HMAT Themistocles on 12th May 1915. Awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery in France in June 1916. Died in 1959, aged 61 years. Victoria Cross 'For most conspicuous bravery. On the return from a successful raid, several members of the raiding party were seriously wounded in "No Man's Land" by shell fire. Private Jackson got back safely and, after handing over a prisoner whom he had brought in, immediately went out again under very heavy shell fire and assisted in bringing in a wounded man. He then went out again, and with a sergeant was bringing another wounded man when his arm was blown off by a shell and the sergeant was rendered unconscious. He then returned to our trenches, obtained assistance, and went out again to look for his two wounded comrades. He set a splendid example of pluck and determination. His work has always been marked by the greatest coolness and bravery.' A slab hut situated in Research, Victoria. An elderly man and woman stand in front of their small bark slab home with bark chimney. It has a tin roof and tin water tank to the side. A small garden is situated at the front. Parkinson claims that the people in this photo are "Jonas and Christina Jane (Gregg) PRIOR in front of their home at Ferny Hill, near Eltham, Victoria, 1877". Photocopy of photo also attached to 14 online family trees for the Prior family on Ancestry.com without the words "A Bush Home". References found to Prior in historical newspapers and the property "Ferny Hill". Jonas was a convict from Kent, England. He arrived in Hobart in 1821 aged 19 years. He married Christina Gregg in Hobart about 1834 and had 11 children. They came to Victoria about 1846. He died at Ferny Hill, near Research, Eltham in 1878 aged 74 years and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery.
