This fine wooden building is located in Browning Street, Orbost and is now (2022) used as the St Andrews Uniting Church Hall. It has a supper room and toilets attached and is a hall that has been used for many community purposes including a Flower Show, exhibitions, concerts, Sunday School, and Harvest Festival etc. In1977, the Orbost Presbyterian Church became the Orbost Uniting Church and the old church became a hall when a new church was built nearby. an excellent photograph of this building which shows the original fence A b/w photograph of a building which is a church with the entrance to the front of the picture. This is a photograph of the first committee and members of the Orbost Bowling Club in 1931. L-R: Rev. Montgomerie, Ab Trewin, Dave & Dick Pardew, Jack Cameron, Harry Cameron, Carl Dreverman, Lance Herbert, Rupert Mosley, J. McKeown, Sam Lynn, T. Bartold - Geo. Haymes. The first meeting was held on 23/3/1922, then the Orbost bowling Club was formed in 1929 when the funds for the construction of the green were issued by debentures of five pounds each. These were all taken up and a six rink green was laid down. Inaugural President, Sam Lynn and Secretary T. Bartold, the first Club Champion was M. Rothberg. It was not until 1951 that women were admitted as associates albeit restrictions.Associate members were not to exceed 25 and ladieswere to be of good character with preference to be given to wives of male members. Ladies had tot be off premises by 4pm. It was not until 1935/1936 that Orbost became a member of the Central Gippsland Bowling Association. Bowling clubs play a significant role in community recreation needs. Ewen Hugh Cameron (1831- 27 September 1915) was born at Kilmonivaig, Inverness Scotland. He migrated to Melbourne in “The Hurricane” in 1853 and in 1855 tried his luck at the newly-opened Andersons Creek Goldfield. Two years later he was appointed first postmaster at Warrandyte and ran the store there. In 1863 he took up the 100 acre farm “Pigeon Bank” at Kangaroo Ground where he lived until his death. In 1874 Cameron was elected as the Member for Evelyn in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and held the seat until he retired in 1914 as “Father of the House”. He held a number of ministerial and other important Parlimentary positions. The most notable was Chairman of the Railways Standing Committee, which was responsible for much of the Railway development in Victoria. Concurrently with his Parliamentary career, he was a member of the Eltham Roads Board and later Council for more than 50 years. In 1867 he married Agnes Bell, a daughter of Kangaroo Ground pioneers. They had eight sons and three daughters. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Catalogue card reads, "Ringwood Show Committee - 1910-1912?. Back row: H. Pratt, J. Hann, J.B. McAlpin. Centre row: -, -, W. Tortice, - Cameron". No one in the front row is identified. There is a slip of paper in the sleeve with the photograph with names on it and some contradict the positions of those on the catalogue card.

The Country Roads Board was the government authority for the construction and maintenance of main roads in Victoria between 1913 and 1983. It was succeeded by the Road Construction authority on 1 July 1983 and later merged with the Road Traffic Authority on July 1 1989 to form the Roads Corporation. James Cameron, an Orbost farming pioneer and Member of the Legislative Assembly, fathered the Country Roads Board. This plaque was possibly removed from a bridge(?) when the name was changed.A heavy rectangular shaped bronze plaque. the background is dark brown and the print and frame bronze coloured. This photograph shows Buchan marble being transported by horse and wagon to Nowa Nowa Railway Station. Lnidsay Cameron is the driver on the right. In the background is the Commercial Store of T. L. Sherrington, General Merchant, Bruthen. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. This pair of cuff links was produced in 1992 as a memento/souvenir to commemorate the centenary of the formation of the Shire of Orbost - 1892-1992. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President.
