In October 1872, State School 1111 Box Rise opened on the corner of Worthing Road and Dane Road. In order for this school to open, School No 442, a Wesleyan School, on the corner of Wickham Road and Chapel Lane, had to agree to close to meet pupil number requirements. Charles Sadgrove was head teacher of the new State School when it opened on October 1st 1872 and he remained until 1878. The school was renamed South Brighton in 1887 to accord with the nearby railway station which opened around that time. The main part of the present building dates from 1890. By the early 1900s the school had been extended to the north. . The school contains a plaque for Harry G Hawker, one of the pioneers of aviation, who attended the school in the closing years of the nineteenth century. The school was renamed Moorabbin in 1909.During the 1940s and 1950s population in the area surged and school enrolments peaked to over 800 under head teacher CS Lansell. Enrollments decreased to 470 in 1969. By the 1990s however, enrollments began to increase again. A reunion gathering for past students of Cheltenham State School held in November 1936A black and white photograph of a large group of men and women in a semicircle on a school play yard beside a weatherboard building .They all appear to be smartly dressed, many women wearing hats and the men in suits. Cheltenham School Reunion. The third annual "Back to Cheltenham State school" reunion attracted an attendance of 600 former scholars to the school on Saturday afternoon. The proceedings were opened by tho mayor of Moorabbin (Cr. J. W. Allnut). The oldest teacher present was Mrs. Grant, of Sorrento, who, as Miss Fraser, had charge of the school from 1880 to 1883. Another old identity was Mr. T. Evans, of Kew, who is 82 years of age — he was the head teacher from 1802 to 1800. Photographs were taken of Mrs. Grant with fifteen of her former pupils, and of Mr. Evans, who mustered 72 of his old scholars. The roll call showed that there were 50 pupils present who attended tho school more than half a century ago. Mrs. Buckley, of Mentone, who is 84, and Mr. W. P. Fairlam, of Cheltenham, 80 years, were the oldest former scholars in attendance. Mr. Fairlam, notwithstanding his age, still carries on the business of an auctioneer. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Grant and Mrs Buckley by the president of the mothers' club (Mrs. Marshall). An enjoyable day was wound up by a dance at night in the mechanical institute, when 200 attended. Education kit - School Writing Slate early 20thC, 20thC
School children learned to write using a slate From 1880’s to mid 1950’s in most schools, very young children first learned to write their letters in sand trays using their fingers or a stick. When about 6, they progressed onto writing on slates . The board was made from a piece of quarry slate set in a wooden frame. A slate pencil (not chalk) was used to form the letters. This slate pencil was often sharpened on the school wall. The advantage of slates over paper was that they could be wiped clean and used again and again. Until the mid 20thC paper was expensive . After the pupil wrote on the Slate, the work was checked by the teacher and then erased for a new task Children had to bring a dampened cloth or sponge to school so that they could clean the slate and start again. The pioneer settlers in the Moorabbin Shire area valued education and established schools for their children in Cheltenham and East Brighton c1860's This writing slate is typical of the type used up to the mid 20th Century in preparatory classes.A writing slate in a wood frame used by school children from c1880s to c1950sschools, education, writing equipment, slate writing boards, victoria melbourne, market gardeners, pioneer, settlers, cheltenham state school no. 84., bentleigh east state school no. 2083, st stephens c of e school tucker road east brighton -

Dolls, antique copy 'Catherine Spence', c1980
Catherine Helen Spence (31 October 1825 – 3 April 1910) was a Scottish-born Australian author, teacher, journalist, politician and leading suffragette. Her family moved to South Australia in 1839. In 1897 she became Australia's first female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the Federal Convention held in Adelaide. Given the epitaph "Grand Old Woman of Australasia", Spence was commemorated on the Australian 5 dollar note issued for the Centenary of Federation of Australia. She was one of the prime movers, with C. Emily Clark (sister of John Howard Clark), of the "Boarding-out Society". This organization had as its aim the placing of destitute children, who would otherwise be sent to "Industrial School", into approved families. She was an advocate of Thomas Hare's scheme for proportional representation, at one stage considering this issue more pressing than that of woman suffrage. This doll is used as an educational toy to help visitors imagine life c1900An antique copy china doll representing Catherine Spence. Audio - Oral History, Jennifer Williams, Mr Sumner Berg, 27th July 2000
Sumner Berg was born in the small logging town of Toledo in Oregon, USA. He came to Australia in 1970 as a teacher. Prior to teaching, he travelled in Africa and joined the peace corps. Upon arriving in Australia, he was originally placed in Melbourne, then transferred to Beechworth in 1971, and has since taught and lived there, teaching biology at Beechworth High School. He is a nature enthusiast and animal rights activist. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Sumner Berg’s story is significant because he provides an opinion on life and schooling differences between America and Beechworth during the 1970s. His story also presents a perspective on teaching in Beechworth and what it was like to emigrate from America in the 1970s.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. It holds up 40 minutes of recordings on each side.listen to what they say, beechworth, oral history, burke museum, jennifer williams, twentieth century, berg, sumner berg, usa, toledo, oregon, teaching, nature, animal rights -
