Charles Meynell Pitt Withers (aka Bill) was the son and last child of artist Walter Herbert and Fanny (nee Flinn) Withers. He was born February 5, 1902 at Heidelberg and baptised April 4, 1902 at St John's, Heidelberg. The family moved to Southernwood at the corner of Brougham and Bolton streets, Eltham in 1903. This is a tall, varnished 'Roll of Honour' . Brown varnish. The top has a small gable under which is the title "ST. JOHNS CHURCH OF ENGLAND" done in gold paint. The two sides are made of a hardwood with two slots routed out of them. The bottom has a small ledge of hardwood. Under the ledge are three curved end pieces. The name section is made from plywood. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. Winlaton was established in Springvale Rd., Nunawading in 1956 as the main state-run institution for adolescent girls. Previously (1951-1953) Winlaton was a home run by the Mission of St James and St John for women with venereal diseases. Re-opened in 1956, female offenders were committed to Winlaton by the courts, but there were also many girls and young women in danger who had not committed a crime. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. Golda Whelan, a designer with Hartnell of Melbourne designed this wedding dress for her daughter Liane Whelan. This book contains the minutes of Christ Church Warrnambool Bowls Club from October 1981 to December 1995. The minutes refer to matters in relation to the running of the club, maintenance of the greens, social events and general procedures which are typical of a sporting club. Warrnambool had two church affiliated Bowls clubs, This particular club at Christ Church and another from St John’s Presbyterian Church. A newspaper cutting undated which is pasted to the inside front cover relates the 50th anniversary of the club.This minutes book contains a large amount of information, activities and names of people associated with the bowls clubs and as such has a strong social history and significance. The Melbourne General Cemetery opened in June 1853. The first male buried there was John Alexander Burnett, chief clerk to the mercantile firm of Dalgety, Borradale & Co. The headstone reads: In Memory of James Alexander Burnett, Merchant, Who Died 25 May 1853, Aged 36 Years. Burnett Street, St Kilda, is named after him. The street was created by F. G. This booklet was written by the Rev. J. E. (Eric) Owen in response to the campaign regarding the playing of Sunday sport in Warrnambool in the 1960s. The specific point of contention was the playing of football on Warrnambool City Council-managed grounds. The article written by the Rev. Owen concluded that there was nothing inherently wrong with the playing of Sunday sport. The Rev. Eric Owen served as the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Church in Warrnambool from December 1960 to 1965, dying in office in the May of 1965. Today Sunday sport, both organized and recreational, is an acceptable and common occurrence. This booklet is of interest as one written by a local Warrnambool person in the 1960s and as a memento of the time when the playing of Sunday sport was a contentious issue. This is a booklet of four pages. It has a pale blue cover with dark blue printing and a decorative edging around the printing. The pages are loose within the cover.

William Edward Watkins was born at Carlton, Victoria on 18 June 1887. He entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1922 and completed his course in 1924. He was ordained and inducted at Collingwood in 1924. In 1925 he was assistant to the Rev. John Barnaby in the Group Mission, which included the churches of Fitzroy and Collingwood. He was called to St. John's Ballarat in 1927, South Melbourne in 1930, St. David's Geelong in 1936, Kew Presbyterian in 1942 and Wallan in 1950. The first Baptist church in Kew was wooden and erected in St John's Parade in 1854 and was enlarged in 1859. A brick church was later erected in Cotham Road in 1882 and was later named Newnham Hall after Reverend Newnham. In 1921 land was purchased in Highbury Grove at a cost of 602.00. Messer's E & F Ratten donated 6 feet of land beside this new purchase which allowed for a frontage 79 feet. The Foundation stone of the current church was laid on 14 October 1922 by Councillor F.R. Patten J.P. This book contains the Constitutions of the Freemason Lodges in Victoria. Freemasonry is a world-wide benefit society. Moves were made in the 1860s to establish a Masonic Lodge in Warrnambool with the first Lodge being St. John’s (No. 895). The Masonic Hall in Kepler Street was built in 1870. This book belonged to a member of the Flaxman family and John Flaxman was a prominent Warrnambool resident in the 19th century – an insurance agent and moneylender in the 1860 and 70s and an employee of the auctioneer, Samuel Macgregor. The book, however, seems to belong to a W. Flaxman. John Flaxman had a brother William but, as far as can be ascertained, he did not live in Warrnambool. There is nothing known so far to link this book with Warrnaambool but it is kept because of the name ‘Flaxman’ and so it may have some relevance.This is hard cover book of 142 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering on the front cover. The cover is slightly marked. This album contains photographs of many Warrnambool buildings and scenes, including Proudfoot Boatsheds, St. John’s Church, Christ Church, Shelly Beach, Hopkins Falls, Sherwood gardens and buildings, Ozone Coffee Palace, Kepler Street, Sandstone Quarries and the Titan Crane on the Breakwater. The photographs have been taken and put in album form by the photographer Joseph Jordan. The advertisements of the hotels on the inside covers place the publication of the album to the years1891-2. We have another album similar to this but there are six photographs in this album (VC000799) that are not in the other album. These extra photographs are of the original gardens and buildings of Sherwood.This is a most important album as the photographs are clear and show a good cross-section of Warrnambool in the early 1890s. Some of the photographs are not represented in other collections (eg Sherwood gardens) and so are of vital historical significance. The advertisements are also of great use to researchers.This album has a brown hard cover and contains three pages of local advertisements and sixteen pages of photographs and 32 photographs back to back. The pages have been bound but some pages have come loose. There is a fold-out section of a 180 degree panorama of Warrnambool taken from Liebig Street hill. The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. While most family members settled in Victoria from 1834, others remained in England and in Tasmania. The daguerreotype was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.Members of the extended Henty family were notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Stephen George Henty's family lived at 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District lived in his final years at 'Field Place', Kew. Numerous members of the Henty family are buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Three quarter length seated studio portrait of Elizabeth Margaret (Milligan) Gaunt, taken using the daguerreotype photographic process, and encased in a standard daguerreotype frame made of tooled leather, velvet and gilt metal. Margaret Gaunt is dressed in a pale silk dress, typical of the 1860s, with a buttoned bodice and wide sleeves. She appears to be holding a book in her right hand. The sitter was the half sister of Mary Ann Lawrence (1821-81), the wife of Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' and 'Field Place', Kew. She married Charles Gaunt (1842-1916) at St John's Church of England, Launceston in 1868. Almond Glassworks was responsible for the overall construction and installation of the window. The concept was developed with the then head of mission, Maureen Waddington. The Kew Baptist Church was originally located on the corner of Cotham Road and St John’s Parade. In 1922, work commenced on a new, larger church in Highbury Grove. The foundation stone of the new building was laid by Cr Ratten of the City of Kew on Saturday 14 October 1922, with the First Kew Scouts forming a guard of honor. A collection taken up at the laying of the foundation stone raised £454. The site and building cost approximately £6,000. The architects for this new red brick ‘semi-Gothic’ church were Messrs Gawler & Drummond. The interior of the church accommodated 500 parishioners. The seating sloped towards the pulpit with no columns obstructing the view of the worshippers.
