Newspaper clipping and photograph provides two stories about Ballarat Tramways following the last tram on 19/9/1971: 1 - "Start on the removal of the tram lines" - with a photo of welder K Drever of the CRB cutting rails in Sturt St. 2 - A piece, headed "Ballarat to blame for loss of trams?" quoting Mr N R White, SEC Chairman about the lack of willingness for Ballarat residents to use the trams, at the civic reception the previous day. Trafalgar Day (21 October) was chosen to inaugurate the stone. The ceremony was performed by Lady Fraser who had generously organised a Fete in her property Norla to raise the funds for the dome. "Owing to the recent death of Simon Fraser (30 July 1919), the ceremony was as simple as possible." according to the Australian dating from the 25th October 1919.Probably due to humidity and the apparent lack of thickness, the stone has become brittle and is now completely lost. On 21 November 1959 yet another special train was run, this time on a G41 engine showing the sign "Puffing Billy Preservation Society, Beech Forest, 25-11-59", with eight NBH excursion carriages and a guard's van. The train stopped at Beech Forest where people removed themselves and wandered around the station. Mixed goods wagons loaded with wood and louvred van rest in the background. Note the delta or 'scissors' crossover between lines in the centre of the picture.B/W.
