Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Collars and box
Detachable collars enclosed in a leather box such as this one were used in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly by men in the business and clerical professions. The collars were attached by studs or buttons to a shirt. The collars were removed prior to shirt washing the shirt. The leather box was most useful for travelling. Detachable collars could still be used today particularly by clergymen. Two are named E R Twomey.This box and collars are retained as an example of vintage men's wear. It will be useful for display.A brown leather cylindrical case with a strap and buckle. It has white thread stitching around the rim and upper edge of the lid, the slot for the buckle, the rim and lower edge of the base . Inside are four detachable white winged collars for wearing with a shirt. Each has three holes, one for a button and two for a stud or for buttons at the front, two wings and a curved slot at the back.They are made of very fine cotton and linen.002215.1 J.T. Four articles from the Australian Jewish Newspaper The first article from 15/09/1961 is about the appointment of Rabbi Rudzki to the South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation. The president and chairman welcomed various Jewish congregations presidents and rabbis, also save a brief of Rabbi Rudzki. New architects plans were announced for a new synagogue. A three page photocopy from a Caulfield Conservation Study by Andrew Ward, on house Heatherbrae located at 73 Neerim Road. The study gives a brief history of the property, describes the house’s architectural features and heritage significance and includes a photograph (100mm x 152mm) of the exterior of the house. The file also includes a page of undated, unattributed, handwritten notes giving a partial list of Heatherbrae’s occupants from 1885 to 1900s and some description of the house. Also included in the file is an undated, unattributed one page handwritten list of the main occupants of Heatherbrae between 1880 and 1970. The file also includes one page of research notes by Dianne Visnovsky, dated 06/11/2009, with details of a publication that describes church fairs held at Heathrbrae circa 1910. A two page photocopy of a typed letter from Peter Upton, dated 10/04/1981, requesting information on the property Coimbra in Chattersley Lane (sic), St Kilda and detailing his family’s involvement in the property. He describes his memories of the house, its rooms, details of engraved glass, floral and decorative motifs and extensive garden. The file also includes a one page photocopy of a typed letter from the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to the St Kilda Historical Society, dated 29/04/1981, concerning Peter Upton’s letter and requesting assistance in providing him with information about the relevant property as Coimbra does not appear on the Trust’s records. The letter includes a hand drawn map (62mm x 120mm) of the area in which the property is located. Also included is a one page typed letter from St Kilda Historical Society, dated 03/06/1981, to the Caulfield Historical Society, forwarding the letters received from Peter Upton and the Trust about Coimbra. The file also includes two handwritten versions of a two page letter, the final version dated 07/09/1981, from the Caulfield Historical Society to Peter Upton concerning his inquiry about Coimbra. It provides a brief list of occupiers of Coimbra from 1935 to 1974. Also included are two versions of a one page handwritten letter, the final version dated 07/09/1981, from the Caulfield Historical Society Historical to the St Kilda Historical Society thanking them for previous correspondence regarding Coimbra. The file also includes two handwritten versions of a one page letter, the final version dated 07/09/1981, to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), from the Caulfield Historical Society, concerning Peter Upton’s inquiry about Combria.
