The 1950's saw a revolution in small appliances for use in the average household. This hand held self heating(kerosene) iron was introduced as a time saving and more convenient iron for pressing clothes and other cloth fabrics. It replaced irons needing a separate fire source to heat the ironing plate. These irons continued to be in service, even when electricity was available in cities and larger rural towns (domestic electric steam irons were invented in 1938). This item was used before and during the electricity supplies available from the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. These irons remained in use within regional rural areas that had limited or unreliable electrical reticulation.In the 1950s and later the Kiewa Valley was still a relatively isolated region which was home to rural properties and small settlements. The availability of electricity and or the financial means to afford new types of electric hand irons ensured that older and sometimes less efficient ironing remained for an extended period covering the 1960s to 1970s. Kerosene products, such as this kerosene iron was a cheaper method for farm based domestic and other rural activities requiring a heat source. The use of kerosene as a heat/light source was able to be supplied in bulk and able to be used when floods severed vital roads into this region. The supply of electricity was in summer time subject to interruption from bush fire damaged wooden poles carrying the electrical cables. Self sufficiency by rural populations was the backbone of survival and the ability to store energy sources "on the farm" was a prerequisite of isolated regions, such as the Kiewa Valley, circa 1950s.This Coleman kerosene iron has a solid steel chrome plated(press) base with a painted (blue) wooden handle. The handle is stud fastened onto an oblong shaped rolled steel handle frame and screwed (two screws) onto the base plate. Both the heating plate and the top securing plate are shaped similar to a river boat. The main housing enclosing the heating element is enamel coated(blue in colour) steel and has a half hole for lighting the kerosene at the rear end. Behind the handle and protruding upwards is a stainless steel fully enclosed container (bowl shaped) for the main supply of kerosene to the burner or generator(enclosed within the main body of the iron. The bowl has an air valve and inlet for pressurised air intake (hand pump) On the bottom rear of the fuel bowl there is a screw regulated fuel pump. The fuel heated base plate provides the heat for this advertised "self heating iron(instant lighting). This container of 11 boxes of safety matches would have been a common item in a household during the first half of the 20th century and would have been used for the safe lighting of lamps, candles, room heating (fires), bath heaters, cigarettes, pipes etc. Safety matches came into use in the first half of the 19th century and the safety aspects have been improved after that time. Safety matches are still used today - for instance, when camping or in times of power failure. These matches are of interest as an example of household items in common use in the past. These are eleven boxes of safety matches (one box missing) wrapped in a buff-coloured paper cover with a label in red, blue and white colours with printing and an image of a dark-haired woman set against a white flame. Each box contains about 60 matches with a label similar to the one on the outside packaging. The matches are wooden with pink tips. The boxes have a rough surface on the side acting as a striking mechanism. This is a vintage lighting mechanism probably dating from the 1920s. It would have been used in a household or business to provide lighting for a room. It is quite heavy so would have mostly rested on a table or ledge. It is a Petromax lantern, a brand name for a type of pressurised paraffin lamp that uses a mantle. The Petromax lantern was developed in 1910 by Max Graetz of the firm of Ehrich and Graetz of Berlin, Germany (petro= petroleum, max=Max Graetz).The Petromax lantern is still produced todayThis lantern is of antiquarian interest as an example of household lighting100 years ago.This is a lantern with a metal base, a wooden stem painted black, a metal body holding a piece of circular glass and a metal top with perforations acting as a chimney. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to.Black and white photo of Fred Lyons with his hansom cab, taken between 1916-1920. This late 19th century maritime lamp is an example of lighting on ships, wharfs and other outside areas around docks and shipyards as well as on vessels.Lamp; grass and glass, with flat metal back and three glass windows. Has metal handle and wood hand piece. A brass lug on the back makes provision for attaching to a socket on a wall. The chimney lid flips upwards. The right-side door frame has a sliding latch, and the edge behind has a sliding panel to allow air flow. This 35mm Westrex 14 projector was purchased from Waverley Theatre (Cnr Burke Road and Waverley Road in Malvern, in 1962) last used by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures" as follows: from 1962 to 1967 - National Theatre, Richmond. from 1967 to 1970 - in a small leatherette on Bridge Road, Richmond. from 1971 to 1985 - Galaxy Theatre Brunswick. After that it was stored at the back of Westgarth Theatre in Northcote. This projector has a primary historic significance as it covers the largest part of the history of film shows by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures", and cultural/social significance since it has been used to project a number of other language films (about 10 different languages) by the company. It also carries a secondary significance of rarity being the last used projector by the company at Galaxy Theatre.This metal (most probably steel) projector is part of a number of projectors owned by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures". It is in dark blue/grey colour and still operational to project 35mm films if needed. The nautical compass is used for determining directions, using a free moving magnetised needle, indicating north and south. This is a medium sized compass and was suitable for mounting in a fixed brass binnacle or a portable wooden box. The compass fluid was typically lamp oil, or a mixture of alcohol and water. This compass, based on its pattern, was probably manufactured around the 1930s. The compass’s maker, Bergen Nautik, was a 20th Century compass manufacturer, making compasses from the 1900s but no longer in business.The factory was located in Hordaland County, Bergen, on the west coast of Norway. This compass is not a very significant marine item as it was made in the 20th century. Richard Liebreich of Germany invented his design of ophthalmoscope in 1855. This example is complete in its case with Coccius lenses and condensing lenses. Early ophthalmoscopes required an external source of illumination, eg lamp or candle, and light was reflected into the eye to be examined by the mirror on the ophthalmoscope. The earliest versions of the Liebreich ophthalmoscope used a polished metal surface to reflect light; glass mirrors were introduced in 1870. A condensing lens was held in front of the patient to view the image. A Coccius lens could be clipped into the holder to counter ametropia of user or subject.This Liebreich ophthalmoscope is significant for the collection as it is the only complete example of the three held in the collection.Cased Liebreich ophthalmoscope with 5 small coccius glass lenses and 2 glass condensing lenses. Mullard Limited was a British manufacturer of electronic components. The Mullard Radio Valve Co. Ltd. of Southfields, London, was founded in 1920 by Captain Stanley R. Mullard, who had previously designed valves for the Admiralty before becoming managing director of the Z Electric Lamp Co. The company soon moved to Hammersmith, London and then in 1923 to Balham, London. The head office in later years was Mullard House in Torrington Place, Bloomsbury, now part of University College London. In 1923, in order to meet the technical demands of the newly formed BBC, Mullard formed a partnership with the Dutch manufacturer Philips. The valves (US vacuum tube) produced in this period were named with the prefix PM, for Philips-Mullard, beginning with the PM3 and PM4 in 1926. Mullard finally sold all its shares to Philips in 1927. In 1928 the company introduced the first pentode valve to the British market. Mullard opened a new manufacturing plant at Mitcham, Surrey in 1929 and in late 1930s Mullard opened a new plant in Blackburn, Lancashire. By 1949 Mullard had produced a number of television sets, such as the MTS-521 and MTS-684 and in 1951 Mullard was producing the LSD series of photographic flash tubes. In the early 1980s, Mullard manufactured the SAA5050, some of the earliest teletext decoding modules made in the UK. In 1957 Philips-Mullard helped to set up the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory (MRAO) at the University of Cambridge. Philips continued to use the brand name "Mullard" in the UK until 1988. Mullard Research Laboratories in Redhill, Surrey then became Philips Research Laboratories. As of 2007, the Mullard brand has been revived by Sovtek, producing a variant of the ECC83 and EL34. The Z Electric Lamp Co. continued business into the 1970s operating from premises in Thornton Heath, south London, manufacturing lamps of specialised design but it closed due to the recession in the mid 1970s. Sovtek is a brand of vacuum tube owned by Mike Matthews's New Sensor Corporation and manufactured in Saratov, Russia. Prior to the installation of gas and electric light, pioneers used candles for lighting after sunset. This ornate candle-stick holder most likely was used in the bedroom. The family of Miss May Curtis were early settlers in Moorabbin ShireSmall white ceramic candle stick holder with pink and yellow floral transfer-printed decoration on the rim. This librarian's chair was given to the school by the family of Joy Chapman who had died during 1948. The chair was part of a number of furnishings supplied by donation for the new library which was opened in 1949. These included blackwood shelves, tables and chairs and a new set of Encycopedia Britannica supplied by the Parents and Friend's Association, a grooved periodical table given by Old Collegians Younger Set, a librarian's desk supplied by the E M Bell estate and more than 200 books supplied by the Old Collegians. (see 'A lamp burns brightly' p. 61). This item is a significant example of the degree to which the school relied on donations from the community to develop the school during the post-war years.
