John Robert Hoskins was a Councillor with the City of Bendigo from1888 - 1902 and Mayor from 1901 - 1902. Hoskins' interests in the region included the mining company Hoskins & Co, which distinguished itself on the late Derwent Reef United Company's leased ground in 1868 by achieving a yield of over an ounce to the ton. In the late 1870s John R. Hoskins formed a estate agency in partnership with Frederick Illingworth. He was also manager of the New Nil Desperandum, formed to work the shaft of the old Raywood mine, from 1906 to 1908. Event program for the Mayoral Dinner July 25, 1902. The photograph was taken on the property owned by the Beer family, situated on Lancefield Road. When Europeans first settled the area and the property was acquired by Michael Coolaton in the 1850s, it straddled either side of the Emu Creek. After the death of Michael Coolaton in 1896 and until the Beer family purchased it in 1953, the property was leased to a number of tenants who concentrated on a variety of grazing and cereal growing pursuits. The Beer family have raised cattle and a Clydesdale stud. This map has been in the Ryder family for approx. 70 years. Probably used when bush walking and skiing in the early days on the Bogong High Plains. The Ryder family are farmers in the Kiewa Valley and were involved in taking their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains where they had a lease. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme opening up the area during the 1940's and 1950's. This type of map is an early one, used by people in the Kiewa Valley and possibly by surveyors prior to construction.The map is an early topographic map used by farmers living in the Kiewa Valley. It is historically significant as these people were involved in taking cattle up to the High Plains during summer and may have been used for bush walking and skiing.This is a sepia coloured paper map which was originally printed copyright registered. It was revised in 20/6.33/4.4.37/8.4.40/24.8.43/19/6/54. It shows roads / tracks / snow poles / snow pole numbers (27) / Snow pole spacing (3 chains. 66 yards) approximately 27 poles to the mile / height above sea level in feet - 5280. It was built by a company of local businessmen and leased out. In 1891 the Coffee Palace was granted a wine licence. In 1895 Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the building and it was re-named the Ozone Hotel. The building was closed in 1915 and re-opened in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. In 1923 the Hotel Mansions became a fully-licensed hotel. In 1929 it was destroyed by fire and the present day Hotel Warrnambool was built on the site. This plate is of considerable significance because it is one of the few items we have from the Hotel Mansions in Warrnambool. The Grand Ozone Coffee Palace/Ozone Hotel/Hotel Mansions was the grandest building ever erected in Warrnambool. Its destruction by fire was a major loss to the city. This is a white plate made of vitrified china (bread and butter plate size). It has a charcoal-black rim around the outer edge and a black monogram and scroll on the outer edge of the plate. There are a couple of small stains on the upper part of the plate and on the base. There is information on the maker and supplier on the base as well as a crown symbol.‘H.M. Gordon Spittle was the youngest of Three brothers. He grew up in Creswick and attended Creswick Grammar School. Gordon purchased 'Mt Cavern' in 1912. It had 4 years of a 10 year lease to run. His mother and father took delivery of it on 1 April 1916. They lived there and farmed it until Gordon returned from active service in May 1919. S. Gordon Spittle married Violet Holmes and both lived at "Mt Cavern" until their deaths. Gordon died in 1942 aged 51. Violet Holmes-Spittle died in 1949 aged 56. Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. Significance This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. Augustus died at “Vauclause” in Hopetoun Rd Warrnambool, 20th August , 1920. The obituary states that although he never took an active part in municipal or political life, his affable and courteous disposition won him troops of friends and he will be sadly missed. This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. Charles Steedman was headmaster of Williamstown Grammar School from 1870-76 and 1885-90. In 1870, under agreement with school trustees, Sir George Verdon and John Courtis, he leased the school under a seven-year lease, effectively saving it from closure. Steedman had previously been manager of Sandridge Baths and a champion swimmer of Victoria. His 1867 book, 'Manual of Swimming', was the first major technical contribution to the sport of speed swimming and water safety, for which Steedman was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2006. As headmaster of Williamstown Grammar, Steedman initiated a student produced school paper called 'The Schoolboy' (surviving editions can be accessed at the State Library of Victoria), added swimming lessons to the curriculum and opened enrolment to girls in 1885. The book contains nine illustration plates featuring line drawings of a human figure in the positions detailed by Steedman in his text. These drawings are attributed to O.R. Campbell. Oswald Rose Campbell is best known for his appointment (1876-1886) as drawing master of the School of Design, a department of the Public Library, Museums and National Gallery of Victoria. He taught (and famously disagreed with) the likes of celebrated Australian artists, Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. O.R Campbell taught drawing and painting at Williamstown Grammar in the early 1870s.The book holds historic significance for Westbourne Grammar School, having been written by a former headmaster and very important figure in the history of the school. It evokes our early history as an emerging grammar school with links to prominent athletes, artists and gentry of colonial Melbourne. Falls Creek is a ski resort in the north east of Victoria on the Bogong High Plains. Members of business's (accommodation & restaurants) formed the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce to promote tourism 'under' the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee. The Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee under the direction of the State Electric Commission of Victoria came into effect in 1959 and from then on building sites were leased and building and sewerage controls were applied. In 1979 the Victorian State Government had established the Ski Industry of Victoria working party with a brief report on its operation. These papers give an insight into the business of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce in 1984 eg. car parking, noise, closure of the resort due to heavy snow falls, the media and general development of the resort.
