The dray was pulled by a horse and used to transport road building materials such as gravel. The tray carried 0.7 of a cubic metre which would have weighed about 1 tonne (varying on the load being wet or dry).This tipping dray was owned by John Briggs who carried gravel on the Tawonga to German Creek Road from 1894 to 1895. Workers were paid 2/- (shillings) per day to cover sections that were called 'a paddock' resulting in workers finishing at 10 or 11 pm. The road opened on the 17th March 1896 at a cost of 1700 pounds. John and Marion Damm (nee Simmonds) selected 317 acres of land at Gundowring in 1873. They lived there until 1902. Dairy farmers kept a journal to record their transactions and business on the farm. John Creamer's daughter Mary Cardwell has her father's journal covering the years 1916 to 1942.The journal was kept by local dairy farmer John Creamer who farmed at Gundowring in the Kiewa Valley. It consists of names of local people and is representative of the business (produce and life) on the dairy farm at the time.Photocopied A3 sized pages from John Creamer's dairy journal covering the years 1916-1942. The book has an alphabet index for people's names with details of their purchases (eg. mutton and potatoes) with the cost in pounds shillings and pence. John Wilson Younger was the proprietor of J Younger & Co Warrnambool, which was a former branch of Melbourne Cash Stores. The Youngers store operated in Liebig St Warrnambool until the 1980’s as a department store James Younger died in 1939 and the store was operated by his son in law, Carlos Gordon for many years. John Younger was involved in many areas of social and community life in Warrnambool. In 1903 he lived at Riccalton 3 Darling St, Warrnambool. He was a director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and was Mayor around 1910 for two terms. He purchased the property Dwarroon and divided it among his four children.A common item which provides a link to one of Warrnambool’s largest and longest running businesses.Wooden hangers with rounded corners and metal hooks. This book was a present from James Dickson to John Glass Cramond in 1897. These two men were business partners and friends. They established the drapery, ironmongery and clothing business of Cramond and Dickson in Warrnambool in 1855 and this business remained as an important store in Warrnambool until 1973. John Cramond was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1876 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1882.This is a most significant item as it belonged to a prominent Warrnambool man and was given to him by another prominent Warrnambool citizen. The store of Cramond and Dickson was one of the best-known and most important shop in Warrnambool for nearly 120 years. This is a brown leather-bound book with a red lining on the inside cover. The book has 900 pages and was printed in 1893. The contents include an English Grammar, an English Dictionary, the population of European Capitals, a list of Cities and Towns in Britain, a list of Animal, Vegetable and Mineral productions, a list of Proverbs, a Law Dictionary, a Compendium of Modern History and the Coronets of Princes of the Blood and of the Peerage. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay. It was established on the south side of Merri St in the approximate site of the present railway station. Large stores were also built near where the present rail lines to hold produce. This docket relates to unclaimed goods and range from tent poles, brooms, sugar scythes, lime juice tea, sauce, camp ovens and ale. John Hyland was the manager who was later mayor of Warrnambool. The Warrnambool tramway was an important part of transportation of goods in the 19th century from the port to the township which was over a mile away. This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. This is a program for the Order of Service for the Induction of the Rev Rhys Miller to St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in 1946. St. John’s Church was officially opened in 1875, burnt down in 1920 and rebuilt around the skeleton structure remaining on the same site. The Rev. Rhys Miller had been a R.A.A.F. Chaplain during World War Two before coming to Warrnambool in 1946. He was absent from Warrnambool for most of that first year undertaking post-graduate studies in Scotland. The Rev. Miller was the Minister at St. John’s Church until 1952 when he transferred to a Gardenvale church in Melbourne. The centenary of Presbyterianism in Warrnambool took place in 1949 and Rev. Miller wrote the booklet, ‘100 Years of Worship and Work’. In 1984 he published his autobiography, ‘Calling and Recalling’. This program is of interest because the Rev. These are two pennants awarded to the winners of the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association (perhaps the Warrnambool division) in 1980 and 2003. The winners were presumably the members of the St. John’s Bowls Club (associated with the Presbyterian Church, Warrnambool) as these pennants come from their collection. St. John’s Bowls Club was prominent in Warrnambool in the 20th century but was disbanded in the second decade of the 21st century. The Henselite company that sponsored these trophies is an Australian company that is the biggest manufacturer of lawn bowls world-wide. R.W.Hensell was the first to produce the plastic bowl in 1930 when the company was formed. These two pennants are of interest because they came from the St. John’s Bowls Cub in Warrnambool, a club no longer existing. Bowls is a very popular sport in Australia. These are two pennants from the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association. Both are triangular in shape and made of felt cloth. One is white with a dark blue edging stitched on and dark blue lettering stamped on. These pennants have all been awarded to the premier bowls team in the Warrnambool district. The Warrnambool District Bowls Association includes the bowls clubs of Dennington, Koroit, Terang, Port Fairy, Timboon, Warrnambool, Lawn Tennis and City Memorial. As the pennants have come from the now-defunct St. John’s Bowls Club of Warrnambool it is presumed that the St. John’s Club was the recipient of the pennants. St. John’s Club ceased to operate in 2013. It was associated with St. John’s Presbyterian Church and was situated in Princess Street. These pennants are of some interest as being mementoes of St. John’s Bowls Club, Warrnambool. This club was a prominent sporting club in Warrnambool for over 80 years. It is presumed that this flag was awarded to St. John’s Bowls Club as it was passed over from that club to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in 2014. St. John’s Bowls Club in Princess Street, Warrnambool was associated with the Warrnambool Presbyterian Church. It was formed in the 1930s and ceased to exist in 2013. This flag is of some interest as a memento of St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. This club was a well-known sporting club in the 20th and early 21st centuries in Warrnambool. Bowling is a popular sport in Warrnambool. This is a triangular-shaped cloth flag or pennant. It is dark blue with yellow lettering stitched on (Warrnambool District Bowls Association Premiers 1963-4). The maker of the flag, Evan Evans Pty Ltd, is a well-known Australian flag-making business. It was founded in 1877 and a member of the family was a co-designer of the Australian flag in 1901. It is a white cloth pennant made in two sections with stitched hems on the edges and through the centre. The side holding the cord is made of thicker folded cloth with a white plaited cord inserted. The lettering is made of blue cloth and machine stitched on to the pennant. The material is nylon and wool. This booklet was published on the recommendation of the Commonwealth government as part of a plan to offer protection to the people in the event of air strikes. Local councils and individuals were called to help to protect themselves in taking precautions,. The booklet itself sets out action to be taken in the event of an air raid happening, lighting restrictions fire prevention, refuge rooms and garden shelters and risks from air raids. It contains the relevant siren signals which denote different types of events and explains in detail various aspects of preparing for possible attack. There was discussion about issues such as evacuation of children should such an event occur with the focus primarily on the larger centres such as Geelong and Melbourne. From 1942 the number of air attacks increased mainly from Japan on the northern and western parts of Australia including over 60 on Darwin. Attacks continued into 1943 and it wasn’t until later in that year that the Prime Minister, John Curtin announced that the threat of invasion had passed.While the link to Warrnambool’s history is tenuous, it was a government publication to all persons in the state of Victoria in 1941.This item relates to a significant period in Australia’s history. All Australians were affected by the war. It has historical and scientific or research interest as it gives a number of diagrams and possible plans and the effectiveness of same. This item is the financial statement of the Warrnambool Young Men's Club In 1882. The Young Men's Club situated in Kepler Street was formerly the Warrnambool Club Hotel building which had opened in 1873 by John Amon Smith. In 1877 it was renamed The Union Club Hotel but it closed in 1879. The Young Men's Club took over the building and incorporated a temperance hotel which opened in 1879. In 1883 the Warrnambool Young Men's Club and Temperance Hotel Company building was sold because of financial loss. This item is of interest as a memento of the 19th century Warrnambool Young Men's Club. This card was presented to George Davidson when he passed the Junior School examination held by St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa Association in 1877. The Tonic Sol-Fa was a technique used for teaching sight singing, invented in the 18th century and further developed, popularised and used extensively by singing teachers in the 19th century. The St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa Association was an extension of the choir of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool and the conductor (and the teacher whose name is on this card) was T. L.Campbell. He was a well-known singing and music teacher in Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th century and specialized in the teaching of the viola, violin and violincello. George Davidson (1860-1941) was the son of John and Isobel Davidson, pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district.This card is of some interest as a memento of the music scene in Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th century with references to T.L. This tin or trunk came from the old Kepler Street, Warrnambol Tait legal offices. The tin originally held legal documents connected to John Hyland (1830-1908). Irish-born John Hyland came to the Warrnambool district in 1850 working as a mounted trooper and a rate collector. He then farmed in the Mortlake district for some years before returning to Warrnambool and setting up as an auctioneer and stock and station agent. He was a Warrnambool Councillor (1880s and 90s) and Mayor (1891-2). His trunk of legal documents was first held by the lawyer, Henry Parrington, operating in Warrnambool from 1888 to 1917 (1888-1900 Higgins and Parrington, 1900 Parrington and Tait, 1901-1917 Parrington). Following Hyland's death in 1908 Henry Parrington has used the tin to house his probate documents and when John Sym Tait purchased the Parrington practice in 1917 he has obviously taken over the Hyland trunk. This ledger is a record of the sales of John Stewart from 1890 to 1905 in the districts of Warrnambool, Garvoc, Hamilton and Horsham. John Stewart was a printer and store keeper in Warrnambool from 1890 to 1895. He was also connected to several hotels in the district- the Pieter Both Hotel in Warrnambool in Raglan Parade, ( his wife was the Licensee in 1897), the Yallock Inn in Garvoc ( his wife was the licensee 1899), and hotels in Hamilton and Horsham.The Ledger is of some interest as it contains the names of many local people at the end of the 19th Century. It is a handy research tool. This ledger has 542 pages. It has a hard cover with a dark green cloth cover with leather binding on the spine and corners of the cover. There is a red label on the spine with gold printing and patterning. The inside of the cover has a mottled pattern. There is an alphabetical index at the front. The pages have red ruled lines and hand written entries in ink. The booklet is a catalogue of the books in the Warrnambool Presbyterian St. John's Sabbath School Library (Robert Carswell's Bequest) early in the 20th century. The books for boys and girls are listed separately and are mostly fiction, many with some religious content. St John's Presbyterian Church was opened in 1875. The building was destroyed by fire in 1920 and rebuilt in a similar style to the original one. Robert Carswell was a Warrnambool resident who died in 1900 at the age of 77 and it is presumed that the bequest from his will enabled the Sunday (Sabbath) School library to be established. The card is a membership certificate indicating that Elsie Alston was enrolled as a Sunday School member in Class 14 and thus entitled to borrow books from the library. No details have been found on Elsie Alston but there were several Alston families in Warrnambool at the time.These items are of some interest as church Sunday Schools in the past, particularly in the 19th century, were important as they were widely attended and provided a range of educational and recreational activities, often not otherwise available to the children at that time'.1 A booklet of ten pages with a blue cover with blue printing and a decorative border on the front. These booklets document the formation and the aims of two early dairy factories in the Koroit and Tower Hill area. These factories later became part of the Koroit FactoryThese two memorandums of association document the formation of two early butter and cheese factories in the Koroit and Tower Hill area, listing the first directors. A meeting at the Koroit Town Hall on May 23, 1888, unanimously decided to form the Koroit and Tower Hill Butter Factory coy. Ltd. Mr W J Anderson started the movement to establish a butter factory to suit the convenience of the share farmers of the Tower Hill Park estate in the early 1890's. This framed copy of a sketch of John Ruskin comes from the original steel plate engraving dating from about 1845. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a notable English writer, philosopher, art critic and polymath in the Victorian era. He was the first Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University and was a prolific writer interested in the connection between nature, art and society, anticipating the more modern interest in environmental and sustainability issues. This framed item is from the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum which was first established in 1871 by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute under the curatorship of a local policeman, Joseph Archibald. This first museum faded away but was revived in 1883 by Joseph Archibald in his retirement years. The Museum continued as part of the Mechanics' Institute until 1963 as an important and much-admired institution. Most of the collection was lost over the years but some items remain, housed at the Warrnambool Art Gallery, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and the Warrnambool and District Historical Society, with the John Ruskin item being part of the latter group's collection.This item is of considerable interest, firstly because it comes from the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum and secondly because it shows the local interest in the 19th century of the notable English writer and philosopher, John Ruskin. This is a copy of a steel plate engraving, a black and white sketch of the head and upper body of John Ruskin. It is enclosed in a cut glass frame with a red cardboard backing attached by metal clips. A section of the backing is torn off and there is damage to the bottom part of the glass frame.J. Thes two documents deal with the purchase and sale of land near Warrnambool by Thomas Simpson. The first document, called a Grant by Purchase, is dated 1852 and shows that Thomas Simpson purchased from the Crown, Allotment 146 (22 acres two roods) adjoining the property of Wollaston on the Merri River and the Mortlake Road, north of Warrnambool. The cost was 90 pounds. The second document is dated 1853 and shows that Thomas Simpson sold this Merri River allotment of 22 acres to Eliza Bromfield, in conjunction with her husband, John Davenport Bromfield, for the sum of 110 pounds. The property of Wollaston was owned by the Manifold family and in the 1850s was leased to William Simpson, the brother of Thomas who had an adjoining property called Wooramoota. John Davenport Bromfield was a Colac farmer who played a prominent part in the early history of that town. His brother James Astley Bromfield, an early chemist in Warrnambool is important in Warrnambool's history.These two items are of considerable significance because they are amongst the earliest legal documents we have connected to Warrnambool's history and because they concern three early pioneers of the district.
