Ann Dale (nee Lees) was given this frame by her younger brother Thomas Chamberlain Lees, who was eighteen at that time. Thomas was the youngest son and seventh child of Lees and Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees. Ann loved her little brother’s artistic talents, which are demonstrated in this frame he designed and carefully carved for her. Thomas had cleverly finished the back with timber pieces around the images, and a section of a 1904 calendar. His “GOOD LUCK” is below the image of Ann, her husband Ellis Dale and their five children, c 1900. Sadly, Thomas died in 1911, aged 25. Ellis Dale’s father, William, was a quarryman who sailed from Yorkshire to Australia in 1852. He later bought land for Dale’s Quarries on the edge of Warrnambool in the area of Dale and Aberline roads. From the age of about eleven, Ellis and his brother worked in the quarry beside their father. In 1890 Ellis Dale married Ann Lees. Ann had lived nearby at Wangoom with her parents, Lees and Sarah Lees, who had had her photograph taken when she was a little girl, wearing her black dress. Ellis built a bluestone cottage for himself and Ann on his father’s land in Dales Road. He later added weatherboard rooms, and they named their finished home “Latrigg”. Early in their marriage Ellis recycled some empty dynamite boxes from their quarry to build a cupboard with drawers for Ann’s flat irons and other ironing equipment. The cupboard was used by future generations until recently, when Ann’s granddaughter, Betty Stone, donated it as part of the Chamberlain Dale Lees Collection. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Much of the temporary accommodation that housed groups such as the Albion Quarrying Company were in the area now under water.This group of photographs are a pictorial record of the early history of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, the people who worked in the background supplying administrative support and the workers and their families. Photos of abseiling down the Gas and Fuel building that were on the corner of Flinders St and Swanston St. It was an event for Legacy Week 1989. See also the training that occurred prior to the event - photos 00486 and 01409. Ron Barassi abseils for Legacy joined by staff member Carol Shaw and Legatee Peter Heeney. A label states it "was a Legacy versus Radio personalities abseiling challenge". Media team was Fox's Wally (Paul) Weissel and Ken Cavanagh and Triple M's Andy McClean. Aided by Williamstown Commando Company with training at Nidrie Quarry. Ron Barassi participated in many events for Legacy over the years, he had been a young Legatee after his father was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. This quern was made from Harcourt granite. Querns were used for grinding wheat into flour. (Wooden handles missing from this catalogued object).It was most likely made on Mount Alexander, in spare time, by a quarry worker using his employer’s gang saw and other tools. Wheat is not now grown in Harcourt district . Early settlers engaged in cropping until they exhausted the fertility of the soil. This quern was utilized by a local pioneer who intended to be self-sufficient to the extent of grinding his own grain into flour.. Many local farmers sowed wheat immediately after clearing the land: raising of a wheat crop was evidence of use and improvement which, along with fencing and erecting other structures, was part of the mandatory steps to prove occupancy as a prelude to obtaining a Crown Grant for what had previously been deemed ‘crown land'The quern is of interest as a symbol of the desire for self-sufficiency and as a demonstration of the extent to which granite could be worked and shaped by masonry tools. This glass kerosene lamp was used at St Peter's Church of England at Cape Bridgewater. From Victorian Heritage Database - St. Peter's Anglican Church (former) is a small sandstone church, located at the end of Bridgewater Fire Station Road. The church was constructed between 1883-1884, as a result of lobbying by the congregation and the Reverend Allnutt to establish an Anglican Church in the area. The area was predominately Presbyterian and Methodist, so such a fine church was somewhat unusual. There was obviously much community support for the establishment of the church; the land was donated by Kennedy, a nearby landholder, and the stone was quarried for free at Mount Pleasant, owned by the Kittson family. The church was designed gratis by the ecclesiastical architect, Mr. Casselli of Ballarat, who designed many significant buildings throughout Victoria in the nineteenth century. The building contractors were a local firm, Messrs. Benson and Hardie. The church retains a high degree of integrity externally, and is in good condition. This item is significant because it demonstrates early methods of storing fuel. It is also connected to St Peter's Anglican Church in cape Bridgewater which is now a visitor accommodationA glass container with a metal sleeve. The top of the glass container has a metal opening and screw top as well as a spout for pouring. There is a metal carry handle with a wooden cylinder in the middle for carrying. This is only fixed to the container on one side as the metal eyelet on one side has broken off. The metal sleeve on the glass container has embossed pattering above and below the word - Dandy. Gives details of the policy, who was covered, amount, premium and conditions. Endorsed by the Insurers Manager as to the requirement that all openings and excavations be lit at night. The manufacture of firebricks is believed to have begun in Bacchus Marsh in the 1880s when William Thomas Wittick in partnership with a Mr Ackers, and later a Mr Telford, quarried a rich deposit of fire clay at Darley. In 1902 financial assistance was provided by David Mitchell a significant businessman and contractor from Melbourne and the business then expanded and became a major supplier of refractories for gas works in Melbourne, with side lines in moulded fire bricks for foundries and smelting furnaces and complete kiln lines for potteries. The business traded under the name Darley Firebrick Company and later as Darley Refractories Ptd Ltd and was in business for over 100 years. The tile (aka refractory) described in this record was possibly produced for use in very high temperatures (in excess of 1,000°F [538°C]) encountered in modern manufacturing. More heat-resistant than metals, they are used to line the hot surfaces found inside many industrial processes. Arthur Henry Schutt. Born 18th July 1912 at Spotswood He was the third child of John Ralph and Mary Jane Schutt. His grandfather was the first librarian of the Victorian Law Courts and his uncle, William Schutt, was a lawyer who later became the Chief Justice Sir William Schutt. His mother was born a Clutha House, stony Creek Yarraville, a was one of ten children. John Schutt opened a chaff mill at the corner of Williamstown and Geelong Roads at West Footscray. The mill was placed on in an old quarry below the ground which saved much of the backbreaking labour of heaving sheaves of hay up into the machinery, the below ground location enable the hay to be fed directly into the railway trucks into the cutters. An elevator then carried the chaff up from the ground directly into the waiting transport, at a great saving in manpower. The chaff mill became on of the largest in Victoria employing more than forty men, and later moved into flour milling.Schutt and Barrie Flour Mills, Melton South site. This set of photos is from a leather bound album bearing the inscription "HUME RESERVOIR AUSTRALIA" plus 'The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M .P.' all inscribed in gold. It was presented to The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M. P, Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs on the occasion of his visit to the Hume Reservoir on 2nd November 1927. This album is of local and national significance as it documents the planning and development of the Hume Reservoir up to 1927. It was the largest water reservoir in the British Empire. The album records the pioneering engineering work that went into its construction.DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, N.S.W. RIVER MURRAY WATERS SCHEME. HUME RESERVOIR. 37. Bethanga Bridge Site. A bridge is being built to cross the Reservoir to serve a large area of country which will be cut off from its natural outlets by the submergence of existing bridges when the Reservoir is in being. The site of the bridge is nearly a mile up the Murray from the Hume Reservoir Quarry. Its length will be approximately half a mile. There will be nine spans of 269 feet with steel truss girders resting on concrete pillars. Some of the pillars are founded on rock while others will rest on nests of reinforced concrete piles. The foundations and concrete piers are in the hands of the Victorian Constructing Authority and the superstructure in those of the New South Wales Authority. Three-page document detailing information on the Great Southern Gold Mine on the Garden Gully line of reef. The main shaft was located in Quarry Hill, approximately 120 yards southeast of Gladstone Street and 66 yards from Peel Street. The main shaft was 2,546 feet plus winze of 180 ft. The plant was a 'splendid example of workmanship in Bendigo Foundries. The winding engine capable of hauling from more than 4,000 feet.' Peter Francis Hopley and his wife raised a family of four boys and seven girls at Spring Gully Road, Spring Gully. Three of their sons, Paddy, Frank and Bob, played football for Kennington, with Bob later playing for Golden Square. In the first year he won the best and fairest trophy. Some of the names are: Howard, McEwen and McPherson. Ella Gaylard, 1967. 16 page typewritten document tracing family's arrival in Australia [Central Victoria - Bendigo (Sailor's Gully), Dunolly, Toolleen] and childhood recollections of the author. Mention of the following: the Lamperd family (original settlers??) and cousins, the Chubb family (the safety lock makers).; Auntie Clark (Eliza Ann); Auntie Bowles (Mary Ann). This is a well written account of life in the region and warrants further study - there is mention of many people by name but surnames may be difficult to determine. Mention of places in addition - e.g. author attended Quarry Hill State School where her father was for some time a teacher. This set of photos is from a leather bound album bearing the inscription "HUME RESERVOIR AUSTRALIA" plus 'The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M .P.' all inscribed in gold. It was presented to The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M. P, Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs on the occasion of his visit to the Hume Reservoir on 2nd November 1927. This album is of local and national significance as it documents the planning and development of the Hume Reservoir up to 1927. It was the largest water reservoir in the British Empire. The gap may be seen in wing wall for the passage of the belt conveyor and half of the concrete mixer house behind. This gives a general view of the New South Wales Township.
