The Stoney Creek dray bridge. Stoney Creek has been bridged a number of times on school road since the creek was re-routed in the early 1900s. A dray bridge was built C 1910 by local residents, which stood them in good stead for more than a decade. This bridge was replaced by a higher timber structure. This is a pamphlet from after electric light was connected to the campground. The pamphlet mentions that electric light and a hot water service have been installed. Record 384 is an earlier version of the same pamphlet, before the electric lights were installed. The front and back pages are shown as the main photo and the centre pages are available under 'Additional Images'. This is a four page, folded pamphlet entitled Souvenir of the Grampians, which was issued by the Hall's Gap Picnic and camping Reserve Committee. It has a large photo of 'The Pinnacle' on the front. The centre pages contain a photo of the 'Comfort Station', a History of the Grampians, a dot-point list of Camp Ground Facilities and information about the Hall's Gap Picnic and Camping Reserve. This is one of a dozen or so pictures of very early Ararat held by Langi Morgala Museum, and can be compared to a succession of later photographs to illustrate the growth of the town of Ararat. The date suggested by the inscription on the front is probably a reference to some other occurrence, since the street seems far to built-up for 1856-1860. The date is more likely the 1870s, or even the 1880sThis photograph, though not in good condition, is one of the few in the possession of Langi Morgala Museum that shows very early Ararat. It is of regional significance, which would be enhanced if a firmer date could be established. This cardboard-mounted large photograph is not in very good condition, but some parts of the image are still clear. The School officially began in 1874 under head teacher Robert Harris, in rooms of the then Christmas Hills Post Office Store. By 1879, authorities agreed a new school was required. As with the citing of the Hall, there was considerable local controversy over whether the school should be built on the high point of School Lane, or the current location (then known as Scrubby Point). Situated on the Yarra River, 5.5 kms south of Christmas Hills on private property. This timber trestle bridge is said to have been built some time after 1907 by Melbourne master-builder, David Mitchell (the father of Dame Nellie Melba), to connect his two "Henley Farm" properties with Lilydale. In earlier days, when the McPhersons owned the property, their children used a punt to cross the river to attend Yering Primary School. Reproduced on p21 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Mrs. R. Thornton notifies that she has taken over the Kangaroo Ground Hotel from Mr. Walker, and the house will be made attractive for weekenders, the table, wines, and spirits being A1 quality" - Advertiser 7 July, 1922" Mrs Ruby C. Thornton sold her interest in the Kangaroo Ground Hotel in September 1928 and moved away after seven years in the district. This photo is therefore dated between July 1922 and 1928. Other newspaper articles identify Mrs Thornton's first name. The lady to the left of frame appears to be taking a photograph of the car in front of the hotel. This may be Mrs Ruby Thornton taking a picture of her car in front of her hotel. A young boy with others standing near their horse and buggy look on. The property was destroyed by fire at 1.45 am on Friday 8 August 1930. The licensee was Mr Hugh Crichton who had taken over from Ruby Thornton. He and his wife just managed to escape the fire with nothing but their night attire. The property was owned by Mr Bruce Donaldson of Ivanhoe and had been erected over 60 years earlier (according to the Advertiser). The Wattle Glen Picnic Ground was located in a paddock just west of the Wattle Glen railway station (between the station and the creek). It has now completely disappeared except for a dilapidated overgrown building on a rise across the track from the railway platform. This was the picnic ground's main pavilion, which for a short time (circa 1972-1974) also served as the Wattle Glen post office and general store.
