Stone ware bottles were used to store items such as ink for ink wells in schools and offices when ink pens were used.Jan may have used this bottle when working at the S.E.C. office. Corrector fluid was used to cover typing mistakes before retyping over it upon drying. Correction fluid became available sold with a brush and was drier and therefore quicker to use. Computers then followed with 'delete' keys to correct mistakes. Cordial was bought at the local grocery shop or supermarket in the bigger towns/cities. Glass bottles were used for cordial concentrate before plastic became more popular and cheaper. Clag was used in homes, schools and offices for sticking mostly paper and cardboard together. It was applied with a brush. In later years adhesives became varied with chemicals being combined enabling many different surfaces to be stuck together. Alex McCullough was a resident of Mt Beauty for many years and wrote a book on the History of Mt Beauty. Mt Beauty was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to house employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Mt Beauty's history is unique as it was built as a construction town in the late 1940s. The information contained in the folder is a written history of the town's development. Alex, 1916 - 2011, worked as a foreman on Clover Dam. He served in WWII, was involved in the community (Mt Beauty & District Progress Association & Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre), achieved many awards, served as Shire Councillor and Mayor, was involved with tennis and golf committees. Pumps were used to move water from one place to another. This one was connected by a belt to an engine that would drive it. Electricity is used to drive pumps nowadays.This pump was used in the original Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Blue steel and brass water pump bolted onto a wooden base. The stand of the pump is rectangular at one end and round at the other. The rectangular end has a hollow brass cylinder extending up. Inside the brass cylinder is a steel piece with a wide brass cylinder attached at right angles at the top. This is attached at the top to a blue steel 'T' at which the other end has a blue (on the inside) wheel with four curved spokes. When the wheel is turned the steel piece inside the cylinder moves from side to side. On either side of the cylinder, at its base are outlets with screw on fittings. Telephones were mounted on the wall and were operated by turning a small handle situated in the middle of the phone. This connected the speaker to the switch board where they were 'put through' to the other end (speaker).Wall phones were used by State Electricity Commission of Victoria workers and their families on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The SECV had a switchboard located at Mt Beauty. The first factory manufactured chairs date to c1850. With a foot rest in 1878 and with a mechanically raised and lowered chair. Chairs have an adjustable height with foot operated jack or hand operated lever on the side. The chair can also rotate, or lean backwards (for hair washing and shaving) and has a head rest .Old Barber's chairs are made from metal and leather and are heavy. Mt Beauty township had a Barber's business during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and beyond. ""Sam The Barber" was an original Kiewa character. Probably for 45 years cut the hair of thousands of Kiewa workers with his scissors, hand clippers and cut throat razor." The milk shaker machine was used in milk bars during the 1940's and 1950's often using fresh milk from the local diaries. Modern machines are more compact with a variety of different settings and the ability to blend a variety of food including fruit and vegetables as well as liquids.Vera Drummond worked in the Tawonga Milk Bar where she used the Milk Shaker machine. The premises were leased out until it finally closed. The Milk Shaker machine was then lent to the Tawonga cafe which was situated opposite the Tawonga Hotel on the Kiewa Valley Highway near Mountain Creek Road. When the cafe owner bought their own milk shaker machine the original was returned to Vera who lived at the Tawonga Post Office. The milk shakes were made with fresh real milk direct from the diary and enjoyed by Vera's grandchildren and great grandchildren especially on summer holidays.This set consists of: 1 stainless steel milkshake blender with black electric cord attached; 3 moulded glasses with vertical grooves; 4 aluminium mixing beakers also with vertical grooves; 3 long handle stainless steel mixing spoons; 1 stainless steel swivel stick. The blender is heavy with an enclosed cylinder at the top containing the motor with a rotating mixer hanging below it. This is supported by a long vertical enclosed cylinder attached to a base where the electric cord is placed. Leo Wimmer who lived locally was commissioned to do the painting for the Mt Beauty, S. K. Pearce Pty. Ltd., Supermarket as a display was wanted to fit against the blank walls opposite the cash registers (where the liquor store is now). His idea was to break up the parts in the painting and use these as large replicas painted on wood for the display. An official opening was held and Leo used the money earned to visit his homeland, Austria. Leo trained as a restorer of church art in Austria.This painting was commissioned for a Cattlemen's display behind the cash registers at the Mt Beauty S. K. Pearce Supermarket. Each part of the foreground was painted separately onto stand alone boards -the cattle, the hut, the grass and the Mt Beauty township. Leo Wimmer lived locally and was a professional frame conservator. Leo Wimmer specialised in gilding and worked at the National Gallery of Victoria and later the National Gallery of Australia (NGA Nov. 1981 - 1990) where he was responsible for conservation of gilded frames in the national collection. This involved crafting of missing pieces on period frames, conservation/restoration of gilded surfaces, crafting of period frames, and lecturing at galleries and institutions on gilding, wood carving, Australian frame history and crafting of period frames. Keith Pearce was a well known identity in the Kiewa Valley as a councillor on the Bright Shire and the owner of stores in Tawonga and Mount Beauty. He was a main instigator of the development of the area after the S.E.C.V. completed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. S.K. Pearce was a significant identity in the Kiewa Valley having achieved much during his lifetime and within the context of the history of the Upper Kiewa Valley. C.W.A. was a popular organisation in the Kiewa Valley. One of their activities was sewing.The Tawonga branch of the Country Women's Association involved many women in the Kiewa Valley. This Hookey board was made of metal unlike many made of wood. The Mt Beauty Rural Fire Brigade was established by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as an 'industry' brigade. When Mt Beauty was handed over to the Shire in 1961, the Fire Brigade became a member of the Country Fire Authority (C.F.A.). Today it is an urban fire brigade.This Hookey board was used by the members of the Mt Beauty Rural Fire Brigade from 1948 when the State Electricity Commission established the brigade. W.D.Chapman had a keen interest in botany and was particularly interested in Eucalyptus species. He was first to discover the tree which now bears his name on his numerous visits to the Kiewa power station which is situated near the Bogong High Plains. He was a Commissioner and later the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, the organisation in charge of building the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. The tree is a cross between two eucalypts. The trees are unique as they cannot procreate. There were two 'Bogong Gum' trees. One at Cranky Charlies and one on the way up to the High Plains passed by the Ryder family on their way up.This plaque was beside the Falls Creek Road and indicated the location of the 'Bogong Gum' tree. The tree was burnt in the 2003 bush fires but survived only to be killed in the 2006 bush fires. There were two 'Bogong Gum' trees. One at Cranky Charlies and one on the way up to the High Plains passed by the Ryder family on their way up. Heavy bronze plaque embossed with inscription. On the back is a large rectangular steel piece bent at the bottom to form a 'U' shape. One end of the 'u' is attached to the plaque and the other end has two holes for bolts enabling the plaque to be attached near the tree. Mt Beauty & District Meals on Wheels committee was formed on 6th Dec. 1967, possibly under the Elderly Citizens Welfare Council News (or Senior Citizens Mt Beauty) with service commencing on 16th July 1968. Volunteers transported meals from the Hospital Kitchen to the elderly and sick members of the community each day including weekends. Eventually the Shire managed the meals and roster until recent times when, in 2016, Alpine Health took over. Members of the Mt Beauty community recognised the need for meals to be delivered to the elderly and sick. They formed a committee and organised the means (rules, meals, containers, roster ) by which they could achieve their goal with volunteers and the Tawonga District Hospital. The first delivery was recorded by the press and was on film by AMV 4 Albury TV station for their local news. Post Offices in Victoria were required to keep track of articles posted and received with the addressee signing on receipt of the article and the name of the recipient also being recorded.Kergunyah Post Office is part of the Kiewa Valley. This register indicates the number of articles being posted during the time and the number and names of people sending and receiving articles.Register commences Nov. 1920 though to Feb. 1951.
