This photograph is of Main Street Stawell looking East around c 1920's. The photo was taken from just below Main & Wimmera Street corner. On the left side is the two story Post Office building. The photograph shows the telegraph poles in the street. Also Copley Post Office Hotel 1912- 22 and other business. On the road are a few people one pushing a trolly, one on a bike and two people in a horse drawn cart. Set of four black and white postcards printed onto a one sided colour textured stock and contained within a folded white glossy paper envelope. The white envelope has the title "Ballarat Trams A Pictorial History in Four Post Cards" and a horse tram printed on it - made from heavy one sided paste board. The postcards consist of 1. Horse tram arriving at Grenville St with person stepping off - same image as Reg. Item No. 1539, 3898 2. ESCo tram soon after opening - c1905/1906 - has Gardens destination sign. 3 ESCo Sebastopol tram at the time of construction - with a "Suttons for Gramophones" roof advertisement and lettered "Ballarat Tramways". 4. SEC Tram - appears to be No. 32 in the Gardens area. On the rear of cards 1 and 2 is a text caption story that is relevant to the card picture. Cards 3 and 4 have a story board on the side and further information on the back. This is an identity card from World War Two. In Australia every civilian person had to have an identity card during that time. These cards were established by the Federal Government in 1939 and continued until 1952. This identity card was issued to a member of the Stasinowsky family living in Warrnambool. This item is retained as an example of an Australian World War Two identity card. This is a buff-coloured card with black printing, handwriting and a stamp. The site of the Post office was the south side of Eltham on the Yarra Glen road. 0.3 km SW of Ridge Rd., now freehold. The first Post Office-cum General Store at Christmas Hills was built by Thomas Young during the 1870s, when the district was a thriving farming community. Young operated postal services here from 1874 to 1909. Moreover, the two front rooms of this general store aslo served as the district's first school. When the store was demolished in the early 1900s, these school-rooms were moved to the residence next door (to the east) which took over the role of the Post Office store until the service finally closed in the early 1970s. The latter building is still in use today as a private residence". Mason & Co. operated from this adress from 1903-c.1932 POSTCARD 1905-1940s Like the carte-de-visite, postcards enjoyed a collecting craze by large numbers of people, and were often kept in albums through which the interested visitor could browse. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. The Blue Duck Hotel stands at the confluence of 3 trout rivers - Cobungra, Bundarra and Mitta Mitta, called Angler's Rest. The original 1900's building was of slab construction and operated as a butcher shop, servicing miners on the track from Omeo to Mt. Wills. In 1912 it was purchased by a miner, Billy O'Connell, and he obtained a hotel license. In the early 1920's he transported 2 houses from Omeo on Horse drays. One is the main building of the Blue Duck and the other was a residence where Billy and his wife raised their nine children. The small log structure behind the pub is State School No.4286 where the children attended school. A teacher was shared with Glen Wills. By the late 1920's the hotel was discovered and patronized by keen anglers. Sir Harold Clapp (head of the railways) was one and he had the bronze blue duck cast and presented to the owners in the 1930's. This stands at the entrance to the premises.These photographs are of a building, in a remote area, that has provided a service to miners, anglers and travellers for over 100 years and continues to do so today. It also played a vital role in the history of the Mt. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Montrose Cottage was build c1856 by John Alexander, builder. He was a Scottish stone mason. It was built with bluestone and hand-made bricks. It is on the Historic Buildings Register, National Trust (Victoria). It is important as a substantial and very early stone cottage. The house is now open to the public. It also provides short term accommodation - self contained apartments. Card produced for Christmas. The post card features a view of the two storey Rupertswood Mansion which was built in Sunbury by Sir William Clarke in 1874. It had 50 rooms as well as a cellar and outbuildings ands built of bluestone. The tower is 100'(38.5metres) high. The card was sent by Waddy Paterson to his sister, Gladys, who was living at 89 Stirling Street, Perth in WA. He wrote the following message: "Dear Gladys, Keith and Waddy are having a grand time and we are here with Grandma and Auntie Anne in Sunbury we will be home soon now we leave by the SS Caroola on Wednesday 7th Dec. So be good until we come home your loving Waddy & brother Keith." Rupertswood Mansion is an important historic building in Sunbury and has had many functions over the years. Around 1878 a series of photographs were taken from the newly completed Ballarat Town Hall tower.
