This is a booklet written by Jack Rooke about his life. Born in 1910 Jack Rooke faced early the challenges of living in the bush in the Camperdown and Panmure areas. He describes the difficulties of the small farmer and the tough living conditions. He also records the struggle to survive during the Depression years in the 1930s and his heartache after his farm was burnt out in the Ash Wednesday fires. Rooke’s story mirrors that of many settlers in the Western District in the early to mid 20th century and so he has produced an important social history in a simple but compelling manner. This booklet is of considerable importance as it gives the details of the life of one person facing the challenges of living in the bush in the district around Warrnambool in the 20th century. This book written by Alan McLean records the historical details concerning the wreck of the Fiji at Moonlight Head, Victoria in 1891. The ship was travelling from Hamburg and bound for Melbourne when it was wrecked at Moonlight Head. Twelve lives were lost and a subsequent enquiry found the captain to be guilty of negligence. Residents of Warrnambool and district had some connection to the wreck as Joseph Jordan, a Warrnambool photographer, took photographs of the wreck scene and was involved in a controversy regarding the late arrival of rescue equipment and residents from the Warrnambool area were charged with stealing some of the wrecked cargo.This book is of considerable local interest as the wreck of the Fiji was connected with Warrnambool and district and affected many local residents.This is a soft cover book of 176 pages. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Williams Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool.This album is of minor interest as a record of the lives of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family. These albums record a sea cruise undertaken by Warrnambool residents, Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, in 1935. (.1 album belonged to Agnes Ardlie and .2 item belonged to Dorothy Ardlie). The albums were complimentary items given to passengers on the P.& O. shipping company sea trip to Fiji. Thomas (Tommy) Rome was a prominent Warrnambool citizen who came to Warrnambool in 1888 and established his footwear shop at 115 Liebig Street in 1907. He retired in 1962. Tommy Rome was also important as the person who recorded songs and skits on an Edison phonograph at the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition in 1897. This is the seat from the aeroplane of Basil Watson. Photographs held by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society confirm that this was Watson’s aeroplane seat. He was a pioneer aviator who had built his own plane which was 5.5 metres long with a wingspan of 8 metres. It had a 7-cylinder 50 HP rotary Gnome engine. Basil Watson flew this aircraft to Warrnambool in January 1917, becoming the first person to fly to Warrnambool, coming from Point Cook in one hour 55 minutes – an Australian cross-country flying record at that time. Watson amazed Warrnambool crowds with his dare-devil flying, looping the loop 14 times over the Warrnambool racecourse. He also brought with him the first aerial post to arrive in Warrnambool and the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has the letter he brought written by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne to the Mayor of Warrnambool. Two months after he was in Warrnambool Basil Watson was killed when his plane crashed near Point Cook in March 1917. Parts of the plane were salvaged and the seat was donated to the old Warrnambool Museum in 1918. It remained there until the museum was dismantled in the early 1960s and it was later passed over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The tag on the seat today is an old Warrnambool Museum label. This is a most significant item as it is the original seat from the aeroplane of Basil Watson, an important early aviator in Australia’s history and it is also an early 20th century memento of the many treasures from the old Warrnambool Museum (1883-1963). The seat shows the primitive nature of early 20th century aeroplanes in Australia. This is a metal (galvanized iron) seat with a semi-circular base and a curved back stretching around from one end of the base to the other end. The back has a rolled metal edging on the base and the top. On the sides are two slots with a khaki-coloured cloth strap passing through the slots. This strap has a metal buckle at the end. The metal in the seat is somewhat blotched and discoloured. This item was made by Crest Records, a Melbourne company established by Marcus Herman that recorded pop, jazz, folk, liturgical and other music from the early 1960s to the mid 1970s. The music and words of ‘A Silver Star’ were by Glorie Attrill nee McLean(1911-1998) who was born in Glenormiston, Victoria. She lived and farmed for some years at The Sisters and in her later years lived at Terang. She wrote several songs, with ‘A Silver Star’ being her best-loved composition. Her two autobiographical booklets are ‘Sunset Serenade’ and ‘At Twilight’. John McSwain was the son of an acquaintance in her childhood days. This record is of interest as the one of the songs was written by a local woman, Glorie Attrill and the disc was recorded in Warrnambool in the 1970s.This is a circular 45 R.P.M. black disc with silver-coloured printing in the centre. The cove has a black and white photograph of the singer on the front with white and blue printing, an image of a star and the logo of the recording company. This record was made by a local business existing in the 1960s and early 70s, Warrnambool Recording Enterprises. This business used a local landmark, the Tower Hill State Park, as its logo and label. The recording is of the 1971 production of ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ by the students of Warrnambool Technical College. This school was established in 1913 in Timor Street and in 1973, as Warrnambool Technical School, was relocated to Caramut Road and re-named Brauer college in 1990. The Timor Street site is now the South West TAFE College. This record is of interest as a memento both of the Warrnambool Technical College’s musical performance in 1971 and of the production of records such as this one by a local business, Warrnambool Recording Enterprises in the early 1970s. This is a 33.3 R.P.M. record with a part-image of a guitar and a yellow label in the centre with black printing and typing. It is in a paper sleeve which is tattered with the bottom section mostly missing. The cover does not appear to belong to the record. This book is the autobiography of Margaret Lord, a noted Australian interior designer, journalist, colour consultant and author. Born in Warrnambool to Margaret and Henry Lord the author studied art in Melbourne and London and became an interior decorator. In the articles she wrote for the Australian Home Beautiful magazine she promoted Australian interior design and materials. Her 1924 book, ‘Interior Decoration – A Guide to Furnishing the Australian Home’, was the first Australian monograph on interior decorating. She was the first in Australia to establish the role of the interior designer consultant and in 1950 she was one of the founders of the Australian Society of Interior Designers. This book is of considerable importance as it is the autobiography of Margaret Lord, the noted Australian interior decorator and writer. She was born in Warrnambool and this is the only item we have that records her life achievement as a pioneer in Australia of interior design. This is a hard cover book of 215 pages. This is a supplement issued by the Weekly Times newspaper in 1896 to commemorate the opening of the Warrnambool Industrial ad Art Exhibition in November 1896. The exhibition ran for three months in the Warrnambool Town Hall/Mechanics Institute area with some temporary buildings. The attendance was recorded as 70,000, making it one of the biggest events ever held in Warrnambool. There were displays, competitions, concerts and operas and sporting and cultural events. The exhibition was historically important as being the time and place when the earliest surviving sound recordings made in Australia were produced by Tommy Rome on an Edison phonograph. The supplement came from the estate of Bruce Morris, the editor of the Warrnambool Standard from 1946 to 1968 and an important Warrnambool historian.This paper, although tattered is a most important souvenir of the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7, a significant event in Warrnambool’s history. This book was written by Roland (Corker) Brown. His forebears were pioneers in the Wyelangta area of the Otway Ranges and he spent most of his life in that region. In this book he has recorded some of the history of the area and his personal recollections, starting from the 1930s when the last of the bullock and horse teams were transporting timber and the old mills were closing. This book is of interest as it gives the history of the Otway Ranges and one man’s story of life in this region in the early to mid 20th century. It will be useful for researchers. This is a soft-cover book of 211 pages. It has a white cover with a black and white photograph of a bush scene and black printing on the front cover. The book contains a poem by the author, two sections of printed material and many black and white photographs.

This Bible originally belonged to members of the Orr family who came from Scotland and had a property at Addington near Learmonth in central Victoria (from the 1860s). Many families in the 19th and early 20th centuries had family bibles which were read individually by family members or read aloud to family members, especially on a Sunday. Many of these large-size bibles were used to record family information (births, deaths, marriages), though this one does not have any information recorded. This Bible is retained as a splendid example of a 19th century family Bible. It will be very useful for display. This is a hard-cover book with gilt edging on the pages. It has a leather cover with heavy gold embossing on the front and back covers. Inserted in the embossing are gold religious symbols and images. The Bible contains 45 chapters with the Old and New Testaments and other biblical and religion- related articles. There are many black and white illustrations and some colour illustrations. This is an original letter written by Peter Adam to Edward Vidler in 1907. Peter Adam was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool district and the letter records his life beginning with his arrival in 1854 and concluding with his connection with the Kinnear family who acquired the historic property of Allandale in 1906. The letter also refers to the sending of a photograph and a sum of money for the right to have the photograph included on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honor Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress league and Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures in 1907 and he proposed producing a Pioneer Honour Board as part of Warrnambool’s 60th anniversary celebrations. He contacted many of the pioneers or their families and asked for a photograph, a fee and a biography and had the Boadrd made. For many reasons, including financial ones, the Pioneer Honour Board was not seen by the Warrnambool public until the 1920s but today it is one of Warrnambool’s great treasures. This letter is original and is of the utmost importance as it gives personal information about the life of Peter Adam, a person on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honour Board and it refers to the submission of a photograph for placement on the board. This is one of only two letters that we know of that refers to the sending of a photograph and the fee charged for its inclusion on the Pioneer Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, is important in Warrnambool’s history as the person most responsible for producing the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board, one of Warrnambool’s historical treasures. This is a letter on a piece of paper folded to make four pages with three of these pages containing handwriting in black ink. This ledger was used in the business of Twites Bakery which was in Timor Street Warrnambool and dates from the 1940s or 1950s. Max Cust, a breadcutter and relief driver at Twites, used this ledger to record the bread delivered in the South Warrnambool area. He lived in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and worked at Twites for a great number of years. This ledger is of interest as an example of the way bread deliveries were recorded in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century and tells us a little about many of the people living in South Warrnambool at that time.This is a ledger of 285 pages. These two notebooks come from Christ Church in Warrnambool. One contains the cash transactions of the Christ Church wardens (Folio 78) with the National Bank of Australasia (1932-1938) and the other contains the financial transactions of the Christ Church Parochial Missionary Association, Warrnambool (1933-1940). The Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1856 with the addition of the nave in 1860 and the square tower in 1882. This is a financial record of goods bought from the Warrnambool property of Woodend owned by the Davidson family. Entry dates are from 1895 to 1924. The property Woodend was founded by James Davidson in 1853/1854. James Davidson came to Australia in 1847 and arrived in Warrnambool with his family and his brother in 1850. He had a store in Warrnambool in partnership with J.C. A Kruger and was also an auctioneer. July Excursion July 6, 2019 - Exploring Lower Plenty The predominant feature of this walk in the Bonds Road area, Lower Plenty is the large number of magnificent old River Red Gums that line the route. These trees are of the spreading woodland form of this species indicating that they must have been originally growing in a reasonably open setting. The walk also includes parts of the historic Cleveland Estate and the homestead “Rosehill” established by pioneer farmer Henry Stooke. This area was the site of the first recorded European settlement in what was to become the Shire of Eltham when the Willis brothers arrived in the late 1830s. From the southern part of Cleveland Avenue there are extensive views across and along the Yarra Valley. An article on the history of this area was contained in Newsletter edition 201, November 2011. September Excursion - Culla Hill Walk Pioneer Eltham farmer Thomas Sweeney (1803 - 1867) named his house, “Culla Hill” after the area in Ireland that he came from. His house, now called “Sweeneys”, remains on a ridge line overlooking the Yarra River. It is recorded that Thomas Sweeney did well out of carting potatoes and other supplies to the various gold fields such as Bendigo, McIvor (Heathcote), Mount Alexander and Beechworth. Culla Hill is now the name of the road providing access to subdivided lots of the former Sweeney property. Installed by the Queenstown Cemetery Trust December 2009 The discovery of gold in Smyth's Creek in 1854 and subsequent gold rush to the Caledonia diggings led to the establishment of Queenstown (present day St Andrews). The first recorded burial was July 31st, 1861 and it was officially declared a Cemetery Reserve in 1866. Many graves are unmarked and unrecorded including many Chinese and other itinerant miners. The cemetery was closed for new burials in 1851. Kangaroo Paw is a soft-wooded perennial which forms clumps of shiny green, long strap-like foliage which can grow to 600mm in length. The flowers are tubular and encased in a furry covering. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. Series 34: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 - Prints & Documentation Series consists of 117 photographs of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. Items I - 41 are larger photographs mounted on card, which were exhibited. Items 42 - 117 are unmounted copies, alternative takes and other entries. Corresponding negatives contained in Series 35: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 – Negatives which consists of 267 colour and B&W negatives and one colour slide of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. The negatives are arranged by the entrant number of the photographer. The Eltham Community Photographic Survey collection is significant to the local community as it was curated by the local community - ordinary people of all ages - representing what they liked and did not like in the area where they lived. It represents an unfiltered representation of the Shire of Eltham as it was in 1988. It also represents one of many projects as part of the national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary.
