“RANEE BELL” This bell originally adorned the cabin of the 12.6m yacht “Ranee”, built for a Doctor Craig of Sydney by the famous Logan Bros of Auckland New Zealand, she was launched as Heather in 1900. A subsequent owner renamed her “Ranee”. Her name reverted to “Heather” prior to being purchased, September 1919, by club members Joe White and David Cargill. Joe White purchased her outright in season 1920-21. He then presented the bell to the club to summon members attention to announcements in the club bar where it remains today and is used for the same purpose. It was also rung to draw attention to impending bar closing times, when it was rung 5 mins before closing, then at closing. Ironically Joe White, when applying for a Admiralty Warrant for Heather in 1924, found out she had previously been registered under the name of Ranee, and the only way to carry on that Warrant, was for him to change her name back to Ranee mid-way during the season. This bookmark may have belonged to, and was possibly made by, Miss Mary Leviny, the eldest of the Leviny sisters, who was a founding member of the Castlemaine Red Cross. This bookmark was found in the book 'Half Mile Down' by William Blake (Reg. No. 1081).A rare, intact memento of Australia Day in the form of a gum leaf made into bookmark. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) implemented the conversion strategy from mainly brown coal supply to hydro - electricity. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. Clover Dam and Power Station were built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the late 1930's to the early 1940's. This dam was constructed to supply water to feed four turbines (62 mega watts) at the West Kiewa Power Station. This was at the forefront of sustainable "Green" energy. Costs associated with power supplies is still a major incentive of governments, however environmentally friendly alternatives such as wind and nuclear have also made inroads. The Kiewa valley and its surrounding alpine catchment were looked at(Victorian State Government), from the beginning of the twentieth century as a source of alternate power for an ever-increasing demand for electricity by growing population and heavy industrial areas within Melbourne City and State regions. Construction of dams, such as Clover Dam provided the large quantity holding areas of water required to turn the turbines at the various power stations to provide the electricity needed. The impact of these controls by moderating water run-off from the alpine regions is beneficial in reducing flooding from thawing of snow on the alps. The little blue bag was stirred around in the final rinse water on washday. It disguised any hint of yellow and helped the household linen look whiter than white. The main ingredients were synthetic ultramarine and baking soda, and the original "squares" weighed an ounce and cost 1 penny. Reckitt’s had been in the blue and starch business in Hull, England, even before they started importing French ultramarine in the 1850s to make the new blue rinse additive at their English factory. These blue bags, being alkaline , were useful to ease the pain of wasp, ant and insect bites. This glass is typical of massed produced souvenirs which were purchased mainly as a memento or small gift. It is doubtful it was produced locally.
