A group of widows at Legacy House preparing trays of rosemary to be given to the public on Anzac Day and worn as a sign of remembrance. Names unknown. In The Answer in 1995 an articles says: "Operation Rosemary. Since 1982 Legacy ladies have volunteered to make rosemary sprigs for the Anzac Day marchers. At a later date they also made sprigs for the Schools Shrine Service. . . don't worry, there are ladies here to show you how to make them and it's a chance to hav a chat and cuppa whilst you work together. Any day day that you can spare . . . please ring Joan Miller." A note on yellow paper from 01046 explains the source of the rosemary. It says the rosemary donated to Legacy each year for the sprigs of rosemary handed out to the public comes from nurseryman, Peter Hannah, who sourced a cutting from a bush in Frankston which was said to come from a cutting brought home from Gallipoli by a wounded soldier. An aerial photo of the Somme in France during World War One. There are coordinates or numbers in some areas. Also labelled are the Johannes and Anvil Wood. Was with 11 other photos of World War One that had been mounted on board for display at Legacy House at some stage. When they were taken off display they were put in the archive cabinets. The founding legatees all served in World War One so these photos would have been of significant places for them. (see 01888 to 01899). From the AWM: Anvil Wood was a small wood to the north of Peronne that marked the centreline of an attack by the 14th Brigade on the morning of 1 September 1918. The northern approaches to Peronne were covered by numerous field and machine-guns, but the leading battalions of the brigade - the 53rd and 54th - pushed their attack home with determination, and sent the German defenders fleeing back to Peronne. Harry Gorry bid for & purchased on internet auction site. The seller's mother was putting these & other items up for auction. Her father/ the seller's grandfather was Dr. Bruno Koening, a German surgeon detained by Allied forces while fleeing New Guinea in 1941. He was detained & sent to be interned in Camp 3, Tatura. There he met the painter Cesare Vagarini & they became friends, thus 4 years later upon the end of the war Vagarini gave the surgeon the two paintings in thanks & in memory of their friendship. Dr Koening then passed the paintings down to his daughter, where they remained in the family for 60 years. The seller's mother decided it was time to sell & was happy that the paintings went to a good home, as the family was until now unaware of the connection between Vagarini and the Tatura Museum. Harry Gorry just happened to notice a familiar name in an auction that he came across by accident & purchased them for our benefit. From 1955 Alan Marshall's home was a bungalow at the rear of his sister's house at Eltham. The first bungalow burnt down. Its replacement shown here still stands. In March 2020 the property was sold. It was last sold previously in November 1982. No mention was made in the advertising regarding the heritage protected bungalow in the rear yard and advertising material presented it as having future potential to develop STCA (Subject To Council Approval). Concerned local members of the community alerted to EDHS to the pending upcoming sale and Council was also alerted to the sale and the potential risk presented to the heritage protected bungalow. In 2021 an updated amendment, C133nill, was made to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme in response to a planning application to develop the property following its sale. The Minster of Planning approved and gazetted the Amendment. Gazettal occurred on 25th November 2021. This homestead was built by Charles Griffith on a 55,000 acre Run. It replaced an earlier dwelling which was a slab hut with a bark roof. Charles Griffith, an Irish barrister, with his friend, James Moore, settled on Glenmore Station in the Parwan Valley in 1840. Their partnership lasted until 1848. In 1846, whilst in Ireland, Griffith married Miss Jane Catherine Magee, then returned to Glenmore and later took his nephew, Molesworth Richard Greene, into partnership, which arrangement proved to be long and prosperous. In 1857, they bought runs at Mount Hope and Mount Pyramid, which they kept until the days of free selection. Griffith led an active and successful public life.He was a member of the new Victorian Legislative Council in 1851, and was later an elected representative of the Legislative Assembly 1853-1859. He occupied many important public positions, including that of magistrate for Bacchus Marsh. Griffith was a devout Anglican and hosted Bishop Charles Perry at his station near Bacchus Marsh in 1849. The photograph shows a view of an extensive single-storey homestead consisting of three adjoining buildings, with a further building on the left of the main property. The series of three buildings is built in an elevated position, with pathways leading through a garden. At the front there is a vegetable garden which seems to be still in a state of development. The main house, possibly of brick, is set at an angle to the other two in this complex. It has a hip roof with a concave verandah on two sides with arched barge boards and simple unadorned pillars. There appears to be a hammock slung between two pillars. Two chimneys can be seen on this dwelling.The adjoining building is of a simpler design, with a lower roof line and a verandah running along the front. Two chimneys can be seen, one emitting smoke. This middle building may be a kitchen and rooms for day-to-day use. The third building is also of a simpler design, with a gable above a verandah. The purpose of this building is less clear. The different styles of construction suggest that these buildings were built separately at different times for different purposes. To the left of the main group of buildings is another cottage, smaller and of a simpler design. A fence runs along the front, clearly separating this building from the others, suggesting it may have been the dwelling of an overseer.On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. This exercise book contains notes written in 1939 by the Warrnambool doctor, William Roy Angus. The notes detail the visits made to the patients of Dr John Hunter Henderson by the two doctors on the occasion of Dr Angus taking over the practice of Dr Henderson. The exercise book lists the familiarization visits made and include the names of the patients visited, the location of their homes, their medical condition and other allied material. Dr Henderson came to Warrnambool in 1904, succeeding to the practice of Dr J.W. O’Brien. He was a member of the Warrnambool Hospital Board of Management and on his retirement he sold the Koroit Street, Warrnambool practice to Dr William Roy Angus. Known by the name, Roy, Dr Angus came to Warrnambool in 1939 after medical work in South Australia and Nhill, Victoria. During World War Two Dr Angus served as a medical officer at Ballarat and Bonegilla. After the war he specialized as an ophthalmologist in the Warrnambool area and had a long and distinguished career. He was also very active in community affairs in Warrnambool.This exercise book is a significant item as it has the original material written by Dr Angus on the occasion of his taking over the medical practice in Koroit Street Warrnambool of Dr John Henderson. The information in the book is of great historical interest. This is a small exercise book with a black cover and white pages ruled with blue lines. Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. This item was part of the Affinity Jewellery line released in 1982.As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, this item has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. This cane basket was used at QBIC for transporting heavy items. The side has been reinforced with wood and four metal bands to help the cane keep it's shape and take the weight of heavy items. The base has two pieces of board and rotating wheels are attached to the middle of the lower board which allows it to sit above ground level and be wheeled over flat surfaces. Crotonhurst was the estate of Mr William F. Langdon and his wife Sophia, the daughter of judge George H.F. Webb. A drawing room meeting was organised here by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild on 13 July 1926 hosted by Mrs Langdon. In an article published in the Australasian on Saturday 24 July 1926 we could read: " A drawing room meeting in connection with the Victoria Missions to Seamen took place on July 13, at Crotonhurst, Caulfield, the picturesque home of Mrs. W. F. Langdon, when the chaplain to the mission (the Rev. J. R. Weller) and other speakers explained the purpose of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, and urged its claim to interest and support from the people of Victoria. The chair was taken by the mayor of Caulfield (Councillor Page), who spoke sympathetically of the fine work being carried on "week-in week-out" by members of the guild. The honorary treasurer of the guild (Miss Tracy) spoke of the need for more annual subscribers." The estate was demolished in 1937.Drawing room meetings were organised by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild to raise awareness and recruit new members. An early colour postcard of a brook scene in Marysville. The original photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire in 1906. This is one of a series of postcards of photographs taken by socialite photographer Nicholas John Caire. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. The primary role of a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) member was that of nursing orderly in hospitals, carrying out menial but essential tasks - scrubbing floors, sweeping, dusting and cleaning bathrooms and other areas, dealing with bedpans, and washing patients. They were not employed in military hospitals, except as ward and pantry maids; rather, they worked in Red Cross convalescent and rest homes, canteens, and on troop trains. At the start of the First World War, Australian VADs were restricted from travelling overseas by the Defence Council. As a result, many chose to travel on their own initiative and join British detachments, often in Australian Hospitals. It is reported that the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital included in their nursing staff some 120 VADs, chiefly Australians in the British service, employed through the Australian Red Cross Society. Australian World War One Soldier memento. This postcard was possibly sent home from France during World War One, most probably from Harry Holmes of Ascot, Victoria. HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion. He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C. The postcard is of "The Ascot" boys. Every enlisted in July 1915, and sailed for Egypt in January 1916, and his imminent return home wounded. Private S. H. R. Elliott No. 782, K.I.A. April 25 1915, aged 28 years. Son of the late Mr. & Mrs George Elliott of Peg leg Road Eaglehawk, enlisted in August 1914 and embarked from Melbourne. N. S. Draper enlisted at the same time. Sydney Elliott was a member of the Eaglehawk Fire Brigade, Rifle club and was chosen to do sniping duty. G. Two catalogues of goods to sell, from Ringwood Timber & TradingEditorial of 15201b includes a short history of the company. In 1937, Mr S Coopersmith and son, Frank (the present Managing Director) started a fruit case manufacturing business in North Melbourne under the name of The Cooper Case Co. The business flourished, and in 1940, recognising the possibilities in and around Ringwood, an old bush sawmill and an area of land on the Maroondah Highway, were secured. Subsequent purchases have since increased this area to approximately 15 acres. It was decided to widen the activities and scope of the business and two new firms were formed. Cooper Sawmilling Co., which operated a modern sawmill, and Ringwood Timber & Trading Co., which handled the output of the sawmill and introduced builders' and general hardware lines to meet the demands of this rapidly expanding area. As Ringwood grew, so too did the organisation which was created to serve it. The principals studied timber and hardware merchandising trends overseas, and after considerable investigation the new building on Maroondah Highway was completed in 1956. Len Parker's Bedford truck is featured in one of the public art mosaics in Were Street, Montmorency. Mr Parker by Grace de Visser (EDHS Newsletter No. 249, December 2019) Len Parker was a regular sight around the district for almost 40 years, selling fruit and veggies from the back of his truck to his regular customers between 1939 and 1978, first in a 1927 Chevy then a 1949 Bedford truck. Len’s connection to the Eltham district started long before he was born. His father Fred first came through the district in the early 1900s. With horse and cart buying and selling what was available at the markets using his mothers’ home in North Melbourne as his base. Fred settled and developed a market garden in the rich soil along the creek at Watsons Creek, Christmas Hills in 1903. Ada Watson was almost five years old and one of eight siblings aged two to sixteen, when her Grandfather and Father both named Christopher Watson brought the Eltham Hotel and they moved from Richmond. Ada’s mother was formerly Emily Silk whose parents Martha and John Silk had been farming in Eltham around 1858 and much later a dairy farmer in Fitzroy. In 1917 at St Margaret’s Church Eltham, Fred aged 44 married Ada aged 35 who was still living and working at the Eltham Hotel. Six years later Ada died from cancer leaving Fred with two small children, Rose five and Len three. Len as a young boy, like his father before him worked the land with horses, growing vegetables, mainly potatoes, cabbages, pumpkins, beans, and tomatoes, selling the excess at the market. Len took over from his ageing father Fred, who had established similar rounds selling door to door with a horse and cart. Len preferred mechanical horsepower to the real kind! In 1939 at the age of eighteen Len brought an old 1927 Chevy Truck. He was taught how to drive it and two weeks later got his driver’s Licence. The Chevy truck had an old wagon on the back with no doors, only hessian bags to keep the wind out! Len had paid 75 pounds for it, kept it for ten years and sold it for the same price! Len’s blue 1949 Bedford was brought new in 1950 for 900 pounds with only a tray back on it. Straight away Len had a wooden frame covered with canvas added, with a roll up front and back. In later years, more solid sides replaced the canvas. Benches were added to hold the boxes of fruit and vegetables, with room to move in the middle, a fruit shop on wheels. Len had large scales attached to a box for weighing the fruit and veggies and many a district baby was also weighed on them. Len would stop at customer’s homes, take their orders and with his big cane basket on his arm deliver their order to their door. On his rounds he always wore a big soft back leather apron and a black or navy beret. If it was cold, he wore a ‘bluey’ jacket on his tall slender frame. Len would go to the markets early Thursday morning, only buying what was not grown at home or brought from his brother in law’s orchard. On his way home Len would start his ‘rounds’ in Lower Plenty and then Montmorency and parts of Eltham. Friday’s regulars were in Research, Kangaroo Ground and Panton Hill. Saturdays were Panton Hill and Christmas Hills. When Len retired in 1978, due to changing social times, women were working more and supermarkets starting to take over; his ageing truck was retired too. In 1999 his son Jim had the Bedford restored, Len was very happy to see ‘Beddy’ all shiny and new once again with just a tray back, like when it was new. Jim still drives the ‘Beddy’ to Heritage Truck shows twenty years on.
