The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) was established by an act of the Victorian Parliament in 1890 to prepare for and to implement a sewerage and water reticulation system across what was then inner Melbourne, its surrounding and middle distance suburbs, including Kew. The MMBW was disbanded in 1991.The map collection of the Kew Historical Society has at its core the historic maps assembled and originally stored in the City Engineer's Department of the City of Kew. These include maps in a number of scales. The vast majority of maps were produced by the MMBW in the first two decades of the twentieth century, and are solid working maps, backed by linen for durability. These maps are historically significant to Kew, the City of Boroondara and to the history of the development of state utilities in Victoria. A number of the Kew maps have additional details added by former municipal officers, including the levels reached by various floods. As these were working documents, information was added to them long after the period of their initial production and distribution.Early map of part of the Borough of Kew, created in the first decade of the twentieth century, at a scale 160 ft to 1 inch. The map covers what was then the south western section of Kew, bordered on its north by Studley Park Road, in the west by Walmer Street and the River Yarra, by High Street South and Princess Street in the East and Barkers Road in the south. The map shows the extent of urban development by that time, prominent institutions and the outlines of built structures in the municipality. Agfa Colour slide, cardboard mount, by Keith Caldwell dated 12 March 1960, of W5 818 running in Mount Alexander Road, North Essendon, crossing the street access for Marco Polo Street. The tram showing route 59, Essendon Aerodrome, has trolley wheels and has a second person in the cab, possibly a trainer. Unusually the tram number is placed above the headlight, In the background are the palm trees in the centre median plantation. Photo published in the Bellcord No. 16, Oct. 2012. From the article with the photograph; The terminus was located at the intersection of High St, Burke, Kilby and Doncaster Roads. We are at the outer edges of Melbourne’s suburbia at the time, unlike the current tram terminus of today. Burke Road, north of Doncaster Road is clearly under construction in preparation for the new river crossing. The vacant block of land in the foreground will remain so for another ten years or so. In 1960 the new Dickens Supermarket was built on this site and the intersection became known locally as Dickens Corner. The narrow track on the left hand side of the photo is Doncaster Road. The tram at the terminus is a straight-sill single trucker of one of the G, K, Q or R classes. It is finished in the late MMTB chocolate and cream livery. A cable grip car body has been placed as a tram shelter at the terminus. The church was subsequently relocated to Francis Street Yarraville where it still stands today as a private residence. Behind the large hedge on the south side of High Street is Smith’s Dairy. Thes two documents deal with the purchase and sale of land near Warrnambool by Thomas Simpson. The first document, called a Grant by Purchase, is dated 1852 and shows that Thomas Simpson purchased from the Crown, Allotment 146 (22 acres two roods) adjoining the property of Wollaston on the Merri River and the Mortlake Road, north of Warrnambool. The cost was 90 pounds. The second document is dated 1853 and shows that Thomas Simpson sold this Merri River allotment of 22 acres to Eliza Bromfield, in conjunction with her husband, John Davenport Bromfield, for the sum of 110 pounds. The property of Wollaston was owned by the Manifold family and in the 1850s was leased to William Simpson, the brother of Thomas who had an adjoining property called Wooramoota. John Davenport Bromfield was a Colac farmer who played a prominent part in the early history of that town. His brother James Astley Bromfield, an early chemist in Warrnambool is important in Warrnambool's history.These two items are of considerable significance because they are amongst the earliest legal documents we have connected to Warrnambool's history and because they concern three early pioneers of the district. They also have a connection to Wollaston, an important early property in the Warrnambool district..1 A piece of light parchment paper, stained with age and folded in three places. It contains printed and handwritten material, a copy of a signature and a white seal. .2 A piece of parchment paper folded in half and then folded again in two places. It contains ruled red lines, handwritten material in black ink and the remains of a red seal. Samuel and Elizabeth Bolton with daughter Ivy at about the time of her wedding in 1940. Samuel Bolton was a butcher at Euroa before they came to live at 244 Union Road, Surrey Hills (some time between 1926-1931). He had a shop at the Mont Albert tram terminus. After he sold it, it became part of the supermarket on the north side of Whitehorse Road. Elizabeth Bolton was the daughter of James Albertus Maker (1854-1941; died Surrey Hills) and his wife Tabitha Butterfield (1863-1935). Ivy Lillian Ellen Bolton was born at Seymour in 1908; she married Patrick James Burns in 1940 at Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. She died in 2004 at Mansfield and is buried at Fawkner Cemetery, as are her parents. Road was formed most of the length from Montrose by contractors Bladin and Dick employing Robert Logan the younger, in 1919 and lay unmetalled till metalled by the contractors in 1922. Mountain ash trees in foreground were on Thomas Hand’s original 23 acre holding. Those beyond coach were on Isaac Jeeves original 160 acre holding Selection Crown Allotment 925(B). This was the area forming part of the inheritance lost by John William Richardson because of the expense of his wife’s illness. Hand enlarged his 23 acres to 305 in 1874. The section below the Main Road was cultivated by Fred hand, son of William and grandson of Thomas in the twenties before he moved to Redcliffes where he is today (1974). Typed on back of photograph P121(a), "Sue Bennett, Victoria's "Girl of the Year" pictured boarding an Alitalia aircraft at Sydney Airport on the first stage of her trip around the world. Sue, 19, of Warrandyte Road, North Ringwood, will visit twenty countries in the course of the next few weeks and will be interviewed on radio and television in Europe and the United States. She will spend ten days in Rome and will also visit Naples, Venice, and Milan, and other parts of Europe before going to London and the United States." Stamp also on back of photograph reads, "John A. Mulligan, Photographer, 108 Albion St. City". No inscription on the back of P121(b) but stamp states photographer as, "Stuart Goldsworthy, ... Melbourne".
