The stauroscope is an instrument for studying characteristic properties of anisotropic mineral particles. Later petrografic microscopes incorporate the stauroscope feature. The Ballarat School of Mines was the first of its type in Australia. The Albert Street frontage was the 'working end' of the campus with the mining laboratory, gauge tower and caretakers cottage. All the structures in the foreground have been demolished to make way for the Flecknoe Building and the M.B. John Building. The gauge tower is also depicted in the 1881 Annual Report.Original double mounted and framed architectural plan for the Ballarat School of Mines Gauge Tower. This item came from the Library at the Mount Helen Campus. Due to the size of the stamp and the date section, it is thought to be the stamp used for in-ward mail. Collected from the chemistry laboratory at School of Mines. The was being dismantled due to the cutbacks in funding to TAFE and science was no longer being taught. The Quickfit Chemistry Set was the most popular set for schools, colleges and universities. There are nine basic items. It allows the construction of at least eight combinations by adding sections together. A labelled diagram included in the box. Included in the box is a BRANNAN 76mm Immersion Glass Thermometer. The Universal Acoustic Coupler was made and would have been used to connect a telephone to dial a computer remotely. The control panel is under the wooden flap. Unknown - Model, Roof and Chimney Model
An important part of apprenticeship training involved building detailed models using required techniques. This model was constructed by a Ballarat School of Mines student enrolled in the Plumbing course. This model of a roof and chimney was made by a plumbing student in the early days of the School of Mines Ballarat. The School of Mines was a trade and mining school located in the historic gold rush town of Ballarat. The model is made from 3 Ply timber. The students were often required to build these models to demonstrate their level of knowledge of what they had been taught at trade school. Although they were often made there are not many of these models intact and in this condition. This list of rocks, minerals, etc. from Victoria was complied and forwarded by the School of Mines, Ballarat, to the Calcutta International Exhibition. At the end of the exhibition the items were to be presented to the Geological Survey of India. One Hundred items are listed. Pages 4 and 5 also show diagrams relating to the land formations and sections. Places in Victoria are named indicating where items were found. List compiled by Professor Ferdinand Moritz Krause. He joined Ballarat School of Mines in 1880 and lectured in Mineralogy and Geology.
