Mt Dandenong & District Historical Society Inc.Object, Kyeema Wreckage Fragment, Pre 1938
The Kyeema airline crash took place on 25 October 1938 when the Australian National Airways Douglas DC-2 Kyeema, tail number VH-UYC, flying from Adelaide to Melbourne, commenced final approach to Essendon Airport through heavy fog and crashed into the western slopes of Mount Dandenong, killing all 18 on board instantly. There is strong evidence that the pilots were becoming unsure of their position. According to Macarthur Job's book, Disaster in the Dandenongs, the radio operator had requested the controller at Essendon give them a radio bearing. Essendon had acknowledged and told them to leave their transmitter on, but the signal stopped and no further contact was made. It is thought that this is the moment that Kyeema hit the mountain. There were 18 people on board the DC-2: 14 passengers, the captain, the first officer, an air hostess, and a cadet pilot who operated the radio during the flight. The victims were :— THE CREW. Smith and Son, of Yalumba, South Australia. ALFRED CECIL GAIN, 42, married, barrister, of Sydney. GORDON H. GODDARD, 30, single, accountant, of North Sydney. LANCELOT WILLIAM SHIRLEY, 27, single, solicitor, of Manly. JAMES IAN MASSIE, 25, single, solicitor, of Sydney. View of Kalorama Gap under snow taken in 1921. Mountjoy Guest House is at top right and Beulah Tea Rooms is in the centre. This photograph has a detailed inscription on the back handwritten by John Lundy-Clarke in 1974.Kalorama Gap under snow 1921 The leafless elm trees are low in the centre and the dual nature of the nearer one can be clearly seen, two small suckers of the older farther tree being twisted together in 1898 by Fred Jeeves. The older tree was planted 1880. Mrs Hands shop can be clearly seen, which was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The old Main Road runs up the centre of the picture and turns to the right and disappears behind “Mountjoy” the big guest house built by Paynters in 1905 and sold to Ellis Jeeves 1908, whose family ran it till 1943. At the bend of the road behind the big pine tree and the dark blackwood can be seen faintly the gable of Price’s house that contained the first shop on the mount. Above it is H Walker’s cottage on Ridge Road that still exists, his homestead is on the left of the picture on the same level. Below this house and to the left can be seen Ted Prices hay and corn store. The present estate agency lies between these two buildings, on the road which had recently been built. This can be seen winding from the lower left corner of picture to the left of the elms. The CRB had recently fenced the road and this is clearly seen as it circles behind trees in the left centre. Barber’s Road crosses CRB Road to the left of the dray under the leafless elm and the Coach Road dives down to the right just behind the pair of blackwoods to right of the elms. The picture was taken from just above the boundary of Isaac Jeeves’s selection Crown Allotment “C” (Jeeves Saddle) which stretched across the Gap to the other side of Mrs Hand’s shop, monopolising the gap from 1871 to 1879. The Stortinget is the name of the parliament building, which is the building on the right of the picture. The Grand Hotel is on the left. The postmark is 1924 which is before Kristiania was renamed Oslo in 1925. The link to Legacy is not known. There are many postcards in the collection from different times and people.This postcard has an aesthetic and historical significance, the perfect handwriting shown on the back of the postcard certainly represents a significant way of traditional handwriting used at that time. Postcards were a common form of correspondence in the early 20th century.Matte finished paper postcard with a printed photo of the Stortinget and Grand Hotel in Oslo, Norway. At the back of the photo has a beatifully made handwriting specifying the message and address. Front side: Printed on photo, Kristiania. Printed black and white postcard of a Ballarat horse tram arriving at the Grenville St. terminus, at the bottom end of Sturt St terminus. Has buildings on both sides of Sturt St. in photograph, with some other horse drawn vehicles and a few pedestrians. In the photo are Suttons building, and business near Grenville St. of an Ironmonger and S. Laurens? On the front of the card is written a short message: - "Mother and self arrived safely in Ballarat. A Rare Collection of Chinese Objects d'Art which were brought to Australia by the Late Capt. W. T. Liley who was a resident in China for many years. The Antiques, China, Furniture and Drapes were removed from 'YOU-MA-TI', Morris St., Williamstown for Convenience of Sale. Auction held by F. J. Andrew Pty. Ltd. In conjunction with J. H. The Bendigo Competitions Society Inc. was originally started by a group of local traders – The Chamber of Commerce – a group of businessmen. 2024 marks the 98th Bendigo Competitions Society Annual Bendigo Eisteddfod. Gwenllian Maude Dunstan Born: Long Gully, 8 August 1911, daughter of Thomas Dunstan and Maude Jane James Married: 1939, William James Rowe Gwenllian Rowe died Bendigo, 18 March 2002 William James Rowe Born: Long Gully, 1912, son of William James Rowe and Hilda May Goldsworthy Railway employee. William Rowe died Bendigo 24 June 1985. Both are buried at Bendigo Cemetery; Quick Lawn, Section 1, Row 1. (No photograph available) Bendigo Musical, Literacy and Elocutionary Society Competitions Certificate 1932. Third prize awarded to Gwen Dunstan for Champion Solo, Ladies and Gents 16 and under 21. Signed by the President H. Woolcock and the Secretary. The rear side of the certificate has handwritten notes. Six Bendigo Musical, Literary and Elocutionary Competition Awards Judge’s Award Sheets for 1923, 1925, 1926, 1930, 1931 and 1932. Letter to Miss Dunstan notifying her that she had been included in the Annual Masonic Ball Debutante set in 1931.
