Photograph - Digital Photograph, Alan King, Grave of Gordon Ford, Eltham Cemetery, Victoria, 27 January 2008
Gordon Ford was a conservationist and a pioneer of natural-style landscaping. He came to Eltham in 1948 and bought a block of land in John Street extending through to Pitt Street. Artist Peter Glass lived opposite in John Street. Early on, Gordon worked for Alistair Knox on construction of the mudbrick Busst house amongst others. At the same time, with the help of friends including artist Clifton Pugh, he progressively built his own house ‘Fülling’, which "grew like Topsy" utilising a variety of second-hand materials. His main focus, which became his life-long occupation, was garden landscaping. Inspired by Edna Walling and Ellis Stones, he sought to reflect the bush settings of rural Victoria where he had grown up. Commissions included Monash University and countless industrial sites but designing for the archetypal quarter-acre block gave him the most satisfaction. He had a huge impact on the look of gardens in Australia from the 1950s, creating seemingly natural bush environments by carefully integrating indigenous and exotic plantings. Gordon died in 1999 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery; the gravesite in a natural landscape setting is marked by a plaque. Another plaque (away from his grave) notes his landscaping design work within the cemetery grounds and at Alistair Knox Park. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. Domestic object - Doily Case, Daisy Dale, before 1922
In the Words of donor, Betty Stone, … “These crocheted and embroidered articles cover a period of three generations- ie. Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. A few examples of these items have survived the years.” The purpose of a doily case was to hold embroidered or crocheted doilies or small mats, which were used on plates to serve cakes and similar items. This case was designed and made by Daisy Elvena Dale, born on 27 October 1899, the youngest child of Ellis and Anne (nee Lees) Dale, of Latrigg, Wangoom, Warrnambool. The doilies in the case are a mixed collection sewn by children, which my mother collected over the years. Daisy Dale made this doily case before her marriage in 1922; it was a tradition for brides to have a 'glory box' containing linen and embroidered articles to take to their new home. A skilled dressmaker, Daisy began her apprenticeship at two shillings and sixpence per week at Miss A. E. Emery's dressmaking establishment at 150-152 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. Considered to be the leading house of fashion in Warrnambool, Miss Emery employed about eight young women who worked long hours to sew elaborate gowns for clients, including wives of graziers who would attend the race carnivals and social functions in Warrnambool. (NOTE: For additional information please refer to my book Pioneer and Places- A History of Three Warrnambool Pioneering Families ie. Chamberlain, Dale and Lees families)This item is associated with the Warrnambool pioneer families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. These families are listed in the Pioneers' Register for Warrnambool Township and Shire, 1835-1900, published by A.I.G.S. Warrnambool Branch. The item is a fine example of early 20th-century needlework.Doily Case made by Daisy Dale. Two green fabric-covered circles with white cord edge trip. The front has a motif of a tulip flower and bud embroidered on it. The circles are secured shut by a knot and loop. Accessory - Bag, Daisy Welsh, 1928
In the words of the Donor, Betty Stone, "This shopping bag is part of a set of two items. The items were designed, hand sewn and embroidered with raffia by my mother Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. Daisy Elvena Dale (born 27 October 1899) daughter of Ellis and Ann (nee Lees) Dale, of Latrigg, Wangoom, Warrnambool, married Raymond Welsh in 1922. A few years later – approximately 1928- Daisy made these two articles, which she used, particularly during the Depression years. The important factor concerning these bags is that they were made with hand-woven cloth cut from a pair of trousers that her grandfather, William Dale brought with him when he left the family farm Back o-the Low situated in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England. He arrived in Australia in 1852 and seven years later was operating a quarry on land purchased in Wangoom, Warrnambool known as The Dale Bluestone Quarries. Dale forebears in Yorkshire were first recorded as "clothiers" ( ie weavers of cloth) in the Saddleworth parish records dated 1764; following generations also continued the tradition of producing hand-woven cloth as a home industry. The cloth, from which these two bags were made, is evidence of a tradition begun by the Dale family in Saddleworth, Yorkshire more than two hundred and fifty years ago. My mother, Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh (granddaughter of William Dale) always referred to the cloth, which is at least 160 years old, as a homespun hopsack. (Note: For additional information please refer to Betty Stone’s book “Pioneers and Places - A History of three Warrnambool Pioneering Families” ie. Chamberlain, Dale and Lees Families)The homespun hopsack fabric for the set of bags was part of the clothing brought from England to Australia, an example of emigrant luggage. It also represents a traditional home industry of 'clothiers'. This item is associated with the families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. These families are listed in the "Pioneers' Register" for Warrnambool Township and Shire, 1835-1900, published by A.I.G.S. Warrnambool Branch.Embroidered shopping Bag, part of a set, the other part being a wallet (purse). Wooden handles and fabric is decorated with embroidered raffia flowers. The bags were made by Daisy Welsh (nee Dale) c. 1928 from homespun "hopsack' fabric of William Dale's trousers, brought to Australia in 1852. Document - PETER ELLIS COLLECTION: PETER ELLIS OBITUARY, 23rd May, 2015
Colour photocopy of newspaper article Obituary. Dated Saturday, May 23, 2015. Article is not complete. Titled Peter Ellis O. Reads: Bendigo is set to farewell a true national treasure. Dawn Rasmussen reports. Peter Ellis OAM 1946-2015. Friends, colleagues and mates around the world agree, with the passing of Peter Ellis OAM, Bendigo has lost a national treasure. 'Peter was passionate about dance, music, photography and the environment, and watching him tend to his interests, like a juggler with 100 different objects in the air, was a sight to behold,' friend John Williams said. In his 70th year, Peter was known for his casual approach to the niceties but he always insisted his teapot be adorned with a suitable tea cosy. He enjoyed a glass of wine with friends, hunting up the history of folklore, dance and music, and nothing better than a walk in the bush. Peter is one of the leading collectors and presenters of traditional dance tunes, dances and musical instruments in Australia. At the 2005 National Folk Festival it was announced by Robyn Holmes that he has the largest selection of dance related material collected in the National Library Archives in Canberra, collected over many years, with mates like the late John Meredith (AM), Shirley Andrews (AM), Rob Willis and Dave Di Santi among others. He literally travelled Australia collecting, and had extensive field recordings from Western Australia and Tasmania in addition to his Victorian collection. .. .. .. And central Victoria. Peter collected a lot of material from Harry McQueen (Castlemaine), who played in dance bands for over 60 years in central Victoria. Harry had a number of tunes from Bill McGlashan who had taken Harry under his wing as a young man. Through Peter's efforts much valuable material and knowledge from almost a century ago was saved for posterity. As a charter member and life member of the Bush Dance and Music Club of Bendigo and the Victorian Folk Music Club, a member of the famous Wedderburn Old Timers Band for over 28 years (two platinum and several gold recordings in that time), founder and leader of the Emu Creek Bush Band (29 years old in 2010) and creator of the 'Friday Night at the Spring Gully Hop' single CD, Peter has been a driving force in the local band and live music scene. Turning his attention to ensuring the music he unearthed would not be forgotten or let lay idle again, under his guidance three double CD's called Quadrille Mania' which contain many rare dances and tunes which have been learnt and recorded were produced, and a triple CD called 'Take Me back To Bendigo', composed of heritage songs and music from the Gold Rush to Federation. These Cd's show the multicultural heritage in Bendigo and include music and songs from the Koorie.. .. … and Welsh communities of Bendigo and district. Upon his recovery of costs Peter has handed over copyright to the Bendigo Community so future profits go back into the community. Three double CDs called 'The Merry Country Dance' with dances and tunes going back to the time of Governor Lachlan Macquarie's Ball in 1804. Most of the tracks are performed by the Emu Creek bush Band following much practice under Peter's tutelage. For further authenticity .. .. .. Tracks which were revived from almost 200 years ago and have now been recorded using the instruments of the time. There is an accompanying book which is set to become the 'Bible' for anyone interested in social dance in Australia. Other CDs include Bush Concert recordings (Volume 1 Goornong), Cooee, Songs of the ANZACs two- CD set in conjunction with the Bendigo Historial Society, 'Music of the Diggings' (four tracks by Peter or Emu Creek) and many more guest… ARTICLE CUT OFFperson, individual, peter ellis oam -

The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. Dederang won its first flag in the Tallangata League in1958 led by the Hobbs brothers Rex, Colin, Ken and Jack2 original black and white photographs of Dederang football club teams.
