This book contains private letters which G. S. Mackay wrote to his daughter, Meta? and his aunt in the 1920’s. G. S. Mackay was born in Sutherlandshire Scotland in 1850. He qualified as a solicitor and came to Australia in 1884 and later to Warrnambool in 1893. He served as a Warrnambool City Councillor and also held a number of important positions within the Presbyterian Church. He was one of the earliest and strongest supporters of the Warrnambool High School. Many of the letters within this book are to his daughter who studied medicine in Glasgow in the early 1900’s. G. S Mackay was prominent in legal, civic and religious life in Warrnambool almost from the time of his arrival in 1893 until his death in 1926. Many of these letters are of a religious nature and as such display that aspect and personal thoughts of Mr Mackay’s personal life. This eye wear transportation box was forwarded from and returned to Kiewa Valley in the 1960's. This period in time, the Kiewa Valley was still a semi remote location, and specialist eye facilities were not available in the region. It was not until the Australian Government proceeded with a "regional development Centre" (for relocating some Federal Departments from Canberra) that the Wodonga/Albury townships developed into a medium city, allowing "specialist" facilities to become available and multiply.This item is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it demonstrates that even in the 1960's early 1970's the Kiewa Valley residents still had to obtain "specialist" services from MELBOURNE. The "isolation" of the Kiewa Valley was still in place due to unreliable transport routes, long distance travel needed to visit cities and a relatively "small" population. The slow but progress marketing of recreational areas in the region and the movement of retirees away from "city violence" and to a quieter location has been on the increase. The expansion of the existing small airfield to one that can accommodate larger aircraft will hasten the expansion of the population in the region, bringing an ever increasing "visiting specialists" covering among other fields, eye and medical practitioners.This brown coloured cardboard box was used by Coles and Garrard (Sight Testing Opticians) to transport spectacles to one of their clients. The box lid has four staples holding the four folded sides in place. Towanga & Mt Bogong. Mt Bogong is actually the mountain on the left at the back. Early maps spelt Tawonga differently to the current day spelling 'Tawonga'. The haystack and fence indicate that the photo may have been taken at the turn of the century. Bullock teams and bullockies were common sights in Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Bullock teams were used for the transport of heavy goods such as wool, wheat, timber, sugar cane, farm equipment, building supplies etc. and their presence and that of their colourful bullock drivers in the countryside have become part of Australia bush folklore. Bullocks were often favoured over horses as they could pull heavy loads over rough surfaces and were less expensive to maintain. As the bullock teams frequently varied in size (up to 40 bullocks have been recorded in the one team) the whip was always a very long one. This item is of considerable significance as a memento of the days (19th century and early 20th century) when bullock teams were the common form of transport for heavy goods. As in other parts of Australia, bullock teams were a feature of the area around Warrnambool and created much interest when they arrived in the smaller towns. This is a wooden stick, slightly tapered to the top, with a leather binding at the top with a small knob. Attached to the top of the stick is a whip made of plaited leather. The leather is brown and stained and slightly worn. These gloves were donated by Miss E. Kerr of Warrnambool and were probably worn by her. The Ponting family has been prominent in the timber and building business in Warrnambool since the 1920s and still operate today. Miss Kerr was a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in the 1970s and donated many items, especially household goods. Many women in the early to mid 20th century owned leather gloves which they wore mostly with suits and coats in the winter time. They can still be purchased today. These gloves are of interest as an example of the type of gloves worn by women in the 20th century. They will be useful for display.These gloves are made of a light brown leather. They have a leather string lace inserted as a decorative pattern on the wrist openings and the same lacing on the upper sides of the gloves but in this area the leather string is missing. These cards have been sent to Jim ( otherwise unidentified) by his cousin Will Harper from South Africa in 1917. William Thomas Harper from Byaduk, Victoria was with the 8th Battalion in World War One leaving Melbourne In February in 1917. He was killed in May 1918 at the age of 22 and was buried in Bailleul France.These cards are are a poignant reminder of Private William Harper killed in World War One. This bottle contained aspirin made by the firm of Howard and Sons of England. This firm had its origins in the late 18th century and manufactured pharmaceutical products, especially quinine and aspirin. The latter was used as a painkiller for headaches and minor health problems. The distributor of this bottle of aspirin was Len Suggett, a chemist in Warrnambool. James Barnes established a chemists business in Warrnambool in the mid 1920s and Len Suggett was the manager. After the death of Barnes in 1939 Len Suggett bought the business. The business was at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets (102 Liebig Street) until about 1950 when it was moved to another site across the road in Liebig Street.This bottle has local provenance as it came from the pharmacy of Len Suggett who was a well-known businessman in Warrnambool for many years and therefore the item has some significance as a memento of that business. This is a small brown glass bottle. It is empty but originally contained aspirin. The main body of the bottle has a label (white with dark blue edging) covering all sides of the bottle. This album came from the estate of Dorothy Ardlie of Warrnambool. It contains photographs of her childhood with her sister Agnes and other family members and later photographs in their adulthood. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) was the daughter of Ethel and Arthur Ardlie, the granddaughter of the well-known Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughter of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Dorothy lived for some time at Aroona, 19 Princess Street in Warrnambool. This album is of interest, firstly as a memento of Dorothy Ardlie, a member of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family, and secondly as a good example of a photograph album showing the typical social history of an upper middle class family in the mid 20th century. The keeping of a photograph album was a hobby of many women in the 20th century.This is a hard cover photograph album of 39 pages.
