Instrument - Weights and measures, Collection of Nested Cup Troy Weights, (23093.3) 1826
The nested cup weights were designed to make the transport of weights, essential items in most commercial transactions, more convenient. This idea goes back to Roman times. In the nested cup form, a series of weights shaped into cups are set one into the other. Each cup fits precisely into the next, larger sized cup which each larger example weighing exactly twice that of the one previous. The Troy weight system was used for precious metals and gemstones.7 x Brass troy measures of various sizes. Frederick Henry Stevens (1861 - 22/1/1931) Frederick was the son of Thomas and Margaret Wiseman. He was a cooper at the Kent Brewery Company in Bendigo. He was an early member of the City Fire Brigade and was their lieutenant in 1886 when the brigade presented him with a crockery set to mark the occasion of his recent marriage to Elizabeth Jane Hills. He competed successfully in various fire brigade competitions. When he died at the age of 69 he was living in Northcote.Two photographs of F. H. Stevens in uniform of the Bendigo Fire Squad, undated. The copy of this book is from the first publication and is rare. The book is set in the Yarra Ranges area with the characters based on local people. THe donors childhood pet dog "Chad" featured as a character in the book in chapter 12 p. 87. The daughter of the owner of Debbie, Patricia Reed (nee McKenzie) lives in South Belgrave. The story of Debbie mothering a kangaroo is based on a true story. The donor also advised that this remarkable dog also rescued and looked after a cat. 126 page hard covered children's fiction book titled "A Dog Called Debbie". Front cover depicts a black and white dog mothering a kangaroo, on a green background. The back cover features an excerpt from the forward by A. R. Chisholm, OBE Hon. D. Litt, Professor Emeritus and an illustration of the dog and Kangaroo playing. Victorian Railways uniform jacket in navy blue woollen cloth. It has straight sleeves, a standing collar with brown piping and rounded fronts. There are two set- in pockets on the fronts and a breast pocket in the right front lining. The body is lined with a glazed black twill and the sleeves with cream cotton with a longitudinal brown pinstripe. The three pockets are lined with heavy tan twill. There are five metal buttons embossed with a crown and "VR". There is a black cotton tape loop inside the collar.In the breast pocket, in purple ink the initials "GL" or "GI". In the right sleeve lining, an unreadable stamp in purple ink. In the left sleeve lining, pencilled "XB 338" or "X13 338". Ceramic - Image, Belltower Pottery, Lidded Wheel Thrown Bowl, c1995
Belltower Pottery was set up by Rudolf Dybka in Kyabram, Victoria, in around 1977 with the help of John Stroomer. Stroomer later took over the pottery, employing as many as 23 workers and apprentices. After a fire in 1988 destroyed the building, Stroomer moved the pottery to the old Kyabram butter factory, where it operated until the late 1990s. The five men who were staff officers of the Victorian Volunteer Force were Captain Snee, Major Pitt, Colonel Anderson, Captain Payne and Captain Burton. The Victorian Volunteer Force was the main defence force in Victoria after the withdrawal the Imperial Troops in 1870. IN that same year a Permanent Artillery Corps ( Victorian Artillery) was also formed. The Volunteer force was disbanded in 1884 and replaced by the Victorian Militia force. Document - LONG GULLY HISTORY GROUP COLLECTION: WM RAE CRUSHING WORKS
William Rae (1823-1887) was born into a farming family in Scotland and came to Australia in i852. After coming to the Bendigo area, he established a puddling machine in American Gully. He then bought a claim on the Victoria reef and was quite successful. Subsequently he bought a steam engine and three batteries to begin crushing quartz. This was such a boon that he moved to a more convenient location in Happy Valley, where he set up a crushing battery with 35 heads.Sketch of a crushing works. Printed underneath is: Wm. Booklet, The Cavenett Family 1840-1985, 1970
This booklet gives information on the Cavenett families from 1840 to 1970. John and Eliza Cavenett with four children set sail from England to Adelaide in 1840 but Eliza and one child died on the voyage. John Cavenett married again and settled in Adelaide. Most descendants of John Cavenett that are mentioned in the booklet also lived in South Australia but some settled later in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. The book has been produced by Kingsley Ireland. This book is of some interest as an example of a family history written by a descendant of the pioneer family. As far as can be ascertained it does not have any local significance. This is soft cover booklet of 41 pages. The cover has a cream-coloured background with sepia-coloured photographs of three Cavenett family members on the front cover and a sepia-coloured reproduction of an S.T. Gill sketch on the back cover. The book contains a Foreword, a Preamble, information on members of the Cavenatt families, an Appendix and a Surname Index.
