Journal written by John Fraser. Fraser's family migrated from Scotland in the 1850s on sailing vessel 'Countess of Cawdor' charted by a group of passengers for travel to Australia. John worked at the Victorian Woollen Mill, Geelong, and kept a diary of sample of cloth, people and happenings in Geelong from 1872. John was aged 6 months and 16 years when he began writing the journal. Book has a black cover which no longer covers all pages due to sample cloth and sheets of paper additionally being stuck into the book, making it too large/thick for the cover. Book shows signs of age particularly though fragile spine of the book and the discolouration of the internal pages. Book is starting to split at the spine, particularly from the bottom of the spine up and has visible signs of age on the black cover. Spots of missing leather are particularly visible on the front, centre right portion of the cover. Electrical telegraphs were point to point text messaging systems primarily used from the 1840's until the late 20th century. It was the first electrical telecommunications system and were sent by an operator or telegrapher using Morse code. Social telegrams were also encouraged and special pictorial forms and envelopes were designed such as the special purple form and envelope which was used when conveying condolence details during World War 2.(fn. Powerhouse https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/163103). There was a brief resurgence in telegraphy during World War I but the decline continued as the world entered the Great Depression years of the 1930s.  Although telegraph lines continued to play an important part in distributing news feeds from news agencies post World War 2, the rise of the internet in the 1990s and the widespread installation of the telephones in homes saw the need for telegrams to greatly decline. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and situated on Pall Mall was the central distribution centre for receiving and delivering telegrams and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. Now a Visitor Centre, dedicated volunteers at the Post Office continued to demonstrate and educate the public about telegraphic services and the development of this unique form of communication up until 2019 when Covid 19 disrupted every day life, coupled with the death Ted Rankins (the last Post Master and a long term telegraph volunteer at the Post Office). This satchel was used by Junior Postal Workers in Bendigo to carry telegrams which were delivered by bicycle in the early years. Small, rectangle, leather satchel with attached shoulder strap and buckle. Satchel is made of five pieces of leather: two side pieces, one piece which is folded to create the front, bottom, back and flap and two small pieces to hold strap ring. The flap has a single hole through which a metal toggle is inserted to secure the flap closed. Satchel has four metal tabs to secure the top front to the top sides and an internal pocket on inside. The leather strap is attached to the top of the side seams of the satchel with circular metal rings and two metal press studs. A small green format school reader No 353 from the Whitcombe's Story Books series : The Crooked Brownie for Ages 8 to 9 Years. The title is printed in red lettering on the front cover with the series above and age group beneath in black lettering. Inside a black lined rectangular shape is a lined drawing of a frog talking to the brownie - on a sign is written 'Samuel Frog Furniture Maker'. 1/- for the cost is in the right hand bottom corner. A slim rectangular brown toned softcover booklet with Guernsey printed in black lettering at the top of the front cover and Price 6d. net printed in white lettering at the bottom right. The front and back covers depict a large overall scene of Guernsey from the land looking over the water. The Bailiwick of Guernsey: (The Islands of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark) is printed on the title page with a sepia coloured photograph of the reception of their majesties the King and Queen, and Princess Mary on the occasion of their visit, July11, 1921. The title is printed on the spine. This is a Second Course of Reading in British History by William Gillies, M.A. Inside, opposite the title page, is a foldout map of the British Empire throughout the world, showing the empire in red. Black and white illustrations and photographs are included. At the back is included three other history titles. It is quite damaged and worn through use. The banner and frame were carried by representatives of the 38th Battalion during parades..1) Rectangular red cloth banner with gold coloured fringing sewn to the bottom edge. Red cloth loops are sewn onto each side and the top to facilitate attachment to the metal frame - see .2). Printed on both sides in gold, black and white - '38 Battalion AIF'. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.A white porcelain feeding mug with gold trim. It has a five centimetres diameter base and curves out to nine centimetres diameter and is six and a half centimetres high. Two thirds of the top is enclosed. A three centimetre tapering to one centimetre, six centimetre long spout comes from the bottom of the mug in line with middle of the enclosed section. There is a one centimetre diameter, six centimetre long handle on the side. Used for feeding fluids to patients who are unable to hold a cup or are unable to sit up. Demonstrates how the SEC used signage to communicate important information to staff.An enameled metal plate sign in an off-white colour, hand painted with black lettering. The sign reads "AIR BRAKE OPERATING END". The sign is curved, and all four corners have been angled. There is a hole in each of the corners to enable attachment to the tram cab. Horizontal lines have been drawn to ensure the even height and spacing of the lettering. The back of the sign has been painted a brass colour, although some of this has flaked off with wear. The top of the clinometer contains a spirit level and at each end there is a brass and steel winder that can depress or elevate the clinometer from minus twenty degrees to plus twenty degrees. The brass scale is graded in five degree units. At the bottom of the clinometer is two brass lugs and a brass steel spring loaded small plate, used for attachment to a Vickers machine gun. Serial number 809.The front face plate has markings: DEP DEGs and ELEV DEGs. The scale is marked in one degree increments numbered in five D degree increments to the left, and five E increments to the right. The left winder is marked from zero to fifty degrees in ten D degree increments. The right winder is marked from zero to fifty degrees in ten E degree increments. Flag - sewn with a green backing cloth. reinforced at the two rope side corners with the letters "VTBA" and the MMTB Monogram or logo in the centre of the flag. Has a twine rope sewn into the flag with a white coloured retaining strip and fitted with slotted flag clips. A manufacturer's label has been sewn onto the bottom corner of the flag. Made by Evan Evans of Elizabeth St Melbourne, made from nylon 75% and wool 25%. Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "St Kilda Football Ground" Black letters on a yellow background. The bottom right hand corner of the St Kilda has the letters "G.H." indicating the depot that it belonged to - East Preston. Coloured certificate presented by the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of the City of Port Melbourne to ex-service personnel who volunteered for the Australian Imperial Forces in World War 2. At the top is the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badge inside the Australian & Victorian flags. At the bottom of the certificate is a coloured drawing of the Port Melbourne Town Hall with guns, battleships and planes on the sides. This certificate was presented to Leo John McLAUGHLIN on 24 November 1946. Many people used coffee grinders, spice grinders or mortar and pestle to grind the roasted coffee beans into a powder. It was made in England by Archibald Kenrick and Sons in about the 1880s. This firm had been established in 1791 in West Bromwich, Birmingham. A nineteenth century cast iron hand coffee grinder, with brass fittings. It has a brass plaque to the front which has the makers name 'A. KENRICK & SONS PATENT COFFEE MILL' around the Royal coat of arms with a lion and unicorn above the words 'DIEU ET MON DROIT'. It dates from c.1880. It has a curved shaped winding handle which has a turned wooden knob at the end. There is a brass knob on the pull out drawer at the bottom to collect the grinds. There are side attachments on the cast iron base sides so the grinder may be screwed to a bench or table.This has a brass plaque to the front which has the makers name 'A. KENRICK & SONS PATENT COFFEE MILL' around the Royal coat of arms with a lion and unicorn above the words 'DIEU ET MON DROIT'. The document is a fawn colour, thicker than paper but able to be folded in 3 for postage. The front is divided into 3 sections, top being name, rank and serial number, age, enlistment date, unit and birth place. Centre is reason for discharge, service time, awards and decorations. Bottom is signed of by relevant person. The rear is dedicated to the individuals height, complexion, eye and hair colour, age on discharge and trade or calling prior to enlistment, intended place of residence. The person then signs the document. This Citizens' Handbook was posted to all citizens of Warrnambool in 1983. It contains an introductory message from the Mayor of the time, Cr. Ron Anderson and information relating to council run facilities and services. There is a page explaining the Warrnambool Bike plan and a section on how to save water. The blue centre pages explains property valuations and how to pay council rates. The rear page lists the contact details for councillors from each of the four municipal wards (Albert, Hopkins, Merri, Victoria) This booklet is an example of information provided to all City of Warrnambool citizen's in 1983. It gives an overview of council run facilities and services in 1983 and will be useful for researchers.A 20 page stapled booklet. Sixteen pages are printed on glossy white paper with black print.
