For the newspaper cutting see Reg. Item 1064. Photographed at Gardens Loop, Wendouree Parade. Tram has a banner advertising a meeting for the Lake Tramway Preservation meeting. Included in the catalogue worksheet is a letter seeking the permission to use the photo in the Museum's Fares Please! and the reply of The Age, seeking payment of $93.50. Was not published. The manager Peter Hodgetts, seated on top of tram, lived at 1163 Gregory St. Company had 13 cottages for employees building along south side of Gregory St. The Frasers lived next door to the sheds. Norman Fraser remembers a horse named Nobby which could not be shod unless its legs were tied. Big George Barnett did the job. He is pictured standing in from of Mr Fraser Senior along with blacksmiths Moyce and Lang. The drivers were Nicholls, Gaston, Buckley, big George Armstrong (lying on the ground) and John Cameron. Various partiesReference, Research, InformationSecondary Values (KHS Imposed Order)Hugh George Ferguson was born in June 1900 in Williamstown. He married in 1940 and subsequently joined the Australian Imperial Forces. After the war he worked as a Billeting Affairs Organiser for the Dutch Government, resettling migrants in Australia. He also worked in advertising as an account manager, and was campaign director for Arthur Rylah is Victorian politics. After the Second World War, he organised the first major trade fairs at the Royal Exhibition Buildings including a World Trade Fair. He built a home in Brougham Street and represented North Ward on Kew Council from 1952 to 1968. He was elected Mayor for the 1959-60 term. He died in 1975, aged 75, and is buried in Boroondara Cemetery. The file on Cr. Ferguson includes newspaper articles relating to development in Kew, the new Kew Town Hall, and Cr. Ferguson’s retirement. The green tinged frontispiece shows a picture titled - Jesus Passes By, where Jesus is standing near people outside their home. The title page has full publisher details. Carbon copy notes, with typed copies of same, which have been cut in half, listing Miners' Wages at the Deborah Mines, 1953. Wages are for a 5 day, 40 hour week and in present day currency. Miners received $27.20 or $35.25 if a Leader in a wet shaft. Braceman $25.80, Platman $25.80 or $27.05 if he worked in a wet shaft. A Mining Blacksmith $28.55, a Fireman, from $26.10 to $26.60, Winding Engine Driver $30.05 a week. Batteryman $25.10, battery Feeder $24.80. Engine Driver's wages varied from $27.10 to $28.90 if in charge of a dynamo and plant. The Basic Wage was then $23.20 a week. In 1895, employees worked a 6 day, 48 hour week and most men received less than $5 per week. The price of gold in 1949 was $30.98 compared with an average of $8.00 an ounce in 1895. BHS CollectionHanro Autumn-Winter 1960 Catalogue: Red coloured card with black and white print is a scene of the Swiss Alps and two Swiss Chalets on the top half of the Cover with *Autumn - Winter 1960 Catalogue* printed in white. At the centre is a white rectangular banner with *Hanro Quality Knitwear For Men* printed in black. The bottom half is three men one sitting on a chair, two standing in front of a wrought iron balustrade wearing Hanro garments sketched in black ink. The first has a V necked ribbed pullover with raglan sleeve and contrasting stripe on the sleeve, neck and waist band. Next is a Crewe necked, saddle shoulder Pullover with fold over neck, knitted bands on sleeve and waist. The third is a V necked patterned cardigan with four buttons, saddle shoulder and pockets either side. Inside the cover on white card with black print is advertising to the left and the Index is on the right. The first page of the catalogue outlines the qualities of their garments. Inside are sketches of their Pullovers, Slip-on's, Cardigans and Sleeveless Cardigan's along with the Style number, Name of Garment, colour and size. The back has the price list to the left and on the right is a list of advertising materials. At the bottom printed in black is *This year, go along with Hanro - for Handsome Profits in Knitwear! Inside the back cover on white back ground with black, grey print and sketching is *Here Now! The very latest Continental Wool knits Styled in Switzerland*. Sketched is a Swiss Alps and village scene. In the foreground on a balcony are two men and a lady wearing Hanro Knitwear. In the centre printed in black is *Permasized & Mothproofed for life with 'Mitin'. A black Banner with white print is *by Hanro. The first settler to occupy the Marlo township area was James Stirling around the year 1875. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. The Governor-in-Council declared Marlo to be a township on 18 February 1889. During May 1889, the government surveyor, E.L. Bruce set out 19 sections of the new township, with the first sales of subdivided land occurring the following May. At this time, Stirling's Marlo Hotel was the unofficial hub for the community. It was a general store, accommodation house and the unofficial post office, with settlers taking turns in bringing the mail from Orbost or Cunningham. This continued until Aug 1942, and in 1969 was located in a house adjacent to the Marlo Hotel, before being transferred to the Marlo General Store in this year. The official Post Office List states the Marlo Post Office opened around 1902. in 1925, the "Marlo House" (a nine room accommodation guest house) was granted a liquor licence. The "Marlo House" became "The Marlo Hotel". The Marlo Hotel was popular with many Orbost and district settlers, who travelled to Marlo by horseback or buggy. The Marlo Hotel, perched on the hill overlooking the estuaries and the entrance is a significat building in Marlo. His records also state that he was in the 5th Reo’s 60th Bn but given his No is 2 days after his brother Henry’s but sounds like 38th. RSL Funeral services conducted by the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch and Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch for their departed members. .1) The first entry in the book is 27.10.1965 and the last on 27.12.2008. A large amount of the entries were written by Jack Barnes OAM during his 43 years as Secretary of the Sub Branch. (Refer Cat No 8040). The vast majority of the funerals were conducted by the President at the time, Committee members or members who were heavily involved with the Sub Branch. It's virtual who's who of Presidents, Life members and notables. 1988 saw the most funerals conducted during that year being 60, other figures varied from mid 20's to mid 50's per year. One notable funeral Volunteer was John Balsillie MBE. (Refer Cat No 118.5) Between 2.1.2007 - 27.12.2008 there was 80 funerals with John conducting 78 of them. There is an interesting addition of one funeral by Jack Barnes on 31.1.1968 was that it was (111 degrees). .2) The list on the sheet with a note, "For Cindy" who was the BDRSL Office Person at the time. these were for 2007, there was 19 on the sheet with only 9 in the book, 7 of the names have a red tick beside. The sheet was written by John Balsillie. John had conducted funerals for many years pre 2007 and for more years after. .1) Exercise book, cover red & white with green text central of front, section of front page missing, pages are blue ruled lines, columns added in red or blue pen, 3 columns per page with year at the top, columns have the deceased persons name, funeral date, person who conducted the RSL funeral, some pages the persons unit served with has been added. all entries are hand written on red or blue pen. .2) Sheet of paper with hand written names in blue pen with month and date, some have a red tick beside.On front on a white sticker "Funerals" in black texta pen. The Woodridge Estate was a major residential subdivision that was developed in many stages in the 1970s and 80s. It extended easterly from the older residential area of Eltham into what had previously been largely privately owned bushland. The subdivision design took into account the steep topography and resulted in large blocks that enabled preservation of much of the tree cover. It included a number of small parks and walkways and the one kilometre long Woodridge Linear Park. A bushland area left as a proposed school site later became the Pauline Toner Butterfly Reserve for preservation of the rare Eltham Copper Butterfly. This walk explores some Woodridge streets as well as the linear park and butterfly reserve, a hilly walk of about 3 km and includes some moderately rough tracks. Permission to visit the external grounds of two private properties to view heritage listed houses not visible from the street was granted. The walk commenced at 2pm at the access to Woodridge Linear Park in Grove Street just east of the Eltham East Primary School (Melway ref 22 B4). This free walk was open to the general public as well as Society members.
