This pot contained ointment made by Thomas Holloway. The ointment was invented and produced by the Englishman Thomas Holloway from 1837 on. This particular pot was produced about the 1920s. The ointment was popular for those suffering from variety of ailments including gout, rheumatism, ulcers and bruises. The sales of Thomas Holloway’s patent medicines made him a wealthy man and amongst his endowments is the Holloway College in Surrey, England, now part of London University. This ointment pot has no known local provenance but is kept as an interesting example of patent medicines of the past. It will be useful for display. This is a white china pot with a lid fitting into a grooved top. The lid has a black and white image of the trade mark of the ointment firm – said to be the figure of the Muse, Hygeia and her brother Telesphorus. The child is holding a banner with the address of the Holloway business and the prices of the ointment jars. The Illustrated Australian News is a former monthly news magazine of record in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its precursor Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers was first published in 1837 by Ebenezer Syme and David Syme. Nails such as this solid copper nail were forged by blacksmiths. A nail of this length could have been used for the ship's decking. It was recovered from the shipwreck of the barque Children. The Children wrecking: The barque Children was one of the first vessels to be lost in the Western District the vessel was wrecked to the east of Warrnambool on 14th January 1838. When it ran ashore in hurricane-force winds, 22 passengers and crew were fortunate to escape being battered to death on the rocks. The Children broke up within 20 minutes, sweeping sixteen of those on board to their deaths. After eleven days, the survivors, all of whom were injured, were rescued and taken to Portland. According to Lloyd's Shipping Register 1837-1839, the Children was built in 1825 at Liverpool and operated by owners Gordon & Co, of London. Registration number 123/1837, James Henty then bought her in 1837 as a three-masted barque of 254 tons, with a hull of “part pitch pine, felt sheathed” and “coppered in 1837” at Launceston registered number 6/1837. In 1838 the Children, under her master Captain H. Browne, completed a successful round trip from Launceston to London (carrying wool and whale oil loaded in Portland), returning in late November of that year carrying a general cargo including house bricks used for ballast. On the 11th of January 1839, the Children sailed from Launceston for Adelaide, with 24 passengers, 14 crew, and an awkward mixed cargo, including 1500 sheep, 8 bullocks, 7 horses, and farming implements, and six whaleboats with associated whaling gear. One account states that when the Children were “put out from port she was light and badly ballasted”. The vessel immediately encountered four days of hurricane-force storms, eventually clearing on the early morning of the 14th. However, it was too late to take accurate measurements of the sun or stars to establish their position relative to the coast. The Children collided with a limestone stack at the entrance of Childers Cove, and the seas smashed her into pieces within half an hour. All the cargo and 16 lives were lost including 8 children. The Henty brothers contributed £150 towards a fund for the 22 survivors at a memorial service held in Launceston later that year. It was a major financial setback for James Henty and his brothers, but one from which they recovered. In a submission to the Governor of New South Wales dated 24 March 1840, the Henty’s summarised their work over the previous six years of establishing the Portland settlement stating. “Six stations have been occupied, one at Portland Bay three at the open country about 60 miles inland called ‘Merino Downs’ They have erected two houses at Portland Bay and two others at Merino Downs”.This nail is significant as part of the vessels original fixtures. The Children was delivering cargo intended for the Portland Bay settlement of her owners the James Henty brothers The wreck is also significant as one of the first vessels to have been lost in the Western District of Warrnambool. As a result the shipwreck of the Children is registered with the Victorian Heritage Register S116. Ship's nail, copper, with a washer attached. Understood to have been used in Linton c.1864. Information provided in 1993 by Russell McDonagh Bennett suggests these scales may also have been used at Dawsons Dam mine c.1907-1909.Beam scales used for weighing gold. Scales consist of two circular metal dishes, each supported by three wires suspended from a metal balance (beam), which in turn is linked to and supported by a vertical metal stand. A lever attached to the stand can be used to move the weighing dishes vertically and horizontally. Wednesday 26 December 1906: Mrs Audrey Bowen received over 70 sailors on her property. According to the article published in The Standard (5 January 1907): "On Boxing Day a most enjoyable time was spent at "Findon," by the kindness of Mrs. Aubrey Bowen and the trustees. During the afternoon Mrs Bowen drove on to the ground and was received with hearty cheers by over 70 sailors. A game of football and races filled up the time only too rapidly, and the party returned to the tea a the Institute." St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was built in 1886 and from 1904 until 1907 was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. As the population increased there was a need for a church in Surrey Hills. This brick church was consecrated in 1922 and replaced the earlier one built in 1907 on the adjacent site in Union Road. After construction of the brick church, the earlier one became a Sunday School. The copper spire was added in 1926, which dates this photo as post-1926. The photograph is taken from Booval Hill (Liebig Street north) and shows the fencing in that area with groups of people in the foreground posing for the photograph. The panorama covers Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and includes private houses, a windmill and three tanks, St. John's Church, St. Joseph's Church, Tattersalls Hotel and the Saleyards.This photograph provides us with historical information on a section of the Warrnambool township in 1887 and is a valuable resource for researchers.This is a black and white photograph in a brown wooden frame and enclosed in glass. Devils' Bank was situated some two miles from Eltham. It is probably the section along the Yarra River where there are a series of rapids stretching past Petty's Orchard to Griffiths Park and the confluence with the Diamond Creek. Only three properties existed in this area in 1945 aerial maps, Worlingworth and the adjoining property on the bank of the Diamond Creek in Banoon Road and No. 2 Kent Hughes Road. Devils' Bank. This knife is believed to belong to the household of Chiltern writer and historian, W.C. Busse. It displays a level of tarnish indicating it may be comprised of silver or silver plate. The blade contains the mark 'EP' which may indicate silverplate over steel. The blade also contains the maker's mark 'Wingfield', which was the trademark of T. Turner & Co but could also refer to the company Wingfield Rowbotham. Both factories are located in Sheffield, United Kingdom. The trademark is ascribed to goods produced in approximately 1907. The handle of the knife displays the initials 'WB', potentially indicating it was made to order. Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern in 1898. He went to school at Wesley College in Melbourne, studied law at the University of Melbourne and became a barrister. Additionally, after spending time on a Victorian station in his early twenties, he wrote two historical novels about bush life. His first novel was 'The Blue Beyond: a Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia', written in 1928 and published in 1930. Busse's second novel was titled 'The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties'. The judges of the Henry Lawson Society's T.E. Rofe competition to advance Australian literature unanimously awarded it the Gold Medal in 1931 for the best historical novel of 1930. Newspaper articles about the award mention the writer's meticulous documentary and oral history research regarding life on the Gold Fields in the 1850s. It became a best-seller. Busse also wrote a series of articles about local history for "The Federal Standard" newspaper in Chiltern. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum. Joseph Harrison, born York UK 1810, convict sentenced seven years hard labour Van Diaeman's Land - Tasmania. Ticket of Leave August 1837. Arrived Williams Town (Port Phillip). 1840 worked as waterman. Married Margaret Barrett, relocated to Kilmore. Travelled to Bendigo Creek January 1853. By July 1853 had threatened to kill wife and eldest son William. Charged with attempted murder. He died 29 September 1854.
