Three documents that capture the history of the Central Boys PT classes and where they were held, that appears to have been collated for the history of Legacy. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. This book belonged to John William Crawley, Junior, a member of the Victorian Institute of Surveyors. He was an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family members recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire of Warrnambool which existed from 1863 to 1994. This book is retained as it belonged to John Crawley, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. This is a hard cover book with a dark brown cover with gold lettering on the spine. The cover is stained and worn away in places. The book contains 14 articles, reports of the Council for the years 1909 to 1919 and office-bearers for 1919-20. There are several black and white photographs and fold-out maps and plans. These two flyers concern the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures held in the Orderly Room over eight days in 1879-1880. The exhibition aimed to encourage local industries and to stimulate young people to manufacture and exhibit specimens of their skills in the various industries and arts. The admission was one shilling for adults and half price for children under 14. The exhibition was not very profitable with only seven pounds going into the Mechanics' Institute funds. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. BCAE was submitting a proposal to the Victoria Institute of Colleges (VIC) for acceptance of the course in Occupational Hazard Management and the approval of the Federal Government Tertiary Education Committee for this course. SEAMEN'S INSTITUTE FOR THE VICTORIA MISSIONS TO SEAMEN In architectural style, the new Seamen's Institute for the Victorian Missions to Seamen, in Flinders street Extension which is to be opened early in September by Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson, the Governor-General, may be said to resemble the type adopted by the early settlers in California, and known in recent years by the name of Spanish Mission architecture. This character is particularly sympathetic with the object for which the building has been erected, and is exemplified in a marked degree in the unique chapel tower of oblong shape with its four pinnacles and open bell turret, with an almost rustic cross as terminal point: also in the arcaded Eastern Court cloisters, with simple round arch arcading, and in the chapel roof, which is framed of heavy rough-hewn hardwood timber work left as it came from the saw, and erected green from the forest. but so well framed and bolted that no harm can result from shrinkage. The foundations are constructed of reinforced concrete, and in some places are nine feet wide. The ground is very treacherous, and considering the irregular weights of the one story, two-story, and three-story parts of the building, the result achieved in sta bility is eminently satisfactory. The main hall has a vaulted ceiling of reinforced concrete construction, and, spanning 35f., is the widest span of any floor in Melbourne of similar construction. The chaplain's residence is built above the lecture hall, and consists of a most complete, up-to-date dwelling-house of eight rooms. It is fitted with every modern convenience and labor-saving device. The cupboard in the pantry, for instance, has two faces — one in the diningroom and the other in the pantry. Dishes are washed in the pantry, put into the cupboard, and taken out in the diningroom, ready for the next meal. Special rooms are designed for the many and various works carried out for the sailors by the industrious workers of the mission. One room is shelved and fitted for the reception, sorting, and distribution of books, periodicals, and other reading matter that is parcelled up by willing hands and given to sailors as ships leave port, to beguile the weary hours of leisure on the sea. Any old books or magazines, illustrated papers, and the like are always welcome at the insti tute. Reading matter of this kind can easily be saved and sent along in bundles. The gymnasium is not yet built. This is the only part of the building required to complete the block; and when its concrete dome, with open eye at summit like the Pantheon at Rome is erected, the whole effect of the groups of buildings will be most striking. In the entrance hall is a floor of marble mosaic, with a central feature of a mariner's compass seven foot in diameter, well executed by the Adamant Pavement Company, and the gift of Mr George Russell. The architect has designed a copper ship as a finial for the main gable of the building, and it, like the gymnasium, is awaiting the collection of more funds or the generosity of a special donor. The whole of the woodwork of the in terior of the building, including high dados round the walls of halls, stair cases, billiard and other rooms is car ried out in Tasmanian hardwood, fin ished in a dull beeswax polish, and the floors of the entire building, except the lavatories, which are tiled, are also executed in Tasmanian hardwood. Mr Walter R. Butler, F.R.I.B.A., was the architect, and the work was carried out by Mr A. B. Robertson, builder. This advertising card was designed by Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. It was printed by 'Frisch, Wein 1'. Slawa undertook a number of sculpture commissions after graduating from the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien (Viennese Academy of Art) where she studied under Professor Hans Bitterlich from 1925-1929. She also undertook design commissions such as this card for the Cosmetic Institute which sold beauty creams. Reminiscent of the work of Austrian painter, designer and ceramic artist Berthold Löffler, in Slawa’s card her stylish typography, colour and design unite to create a unique work.This is an example of Austrian graphic design work between the wars and is of historical and artistic significance. From it's beginning in 1867, the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind grew in size and its number of employees and benefactors. These bound volumes of annual reports contain the information sent to subscribers of the Institute and outline the notable events and difficulties facing the blind and the RVIB. These include the acquisition of Ormond Hall, nursery and school buildings by the Commonwealth and the transferal of infants and pupils to 'The Georgian' at Olinda with the need for more staff due to more residential staff required, blind pupils formed a 'Junior Red Cross Circle' raising money and also contributed knitwear and splints for mine-sweepers, the loss of Headmaster Garnet Dent, Miss Lenna Bryson and Mrs E Dunkerton on or after the move to Olinda, the appointment of Headmaster Geoffrey E Green, Miss Betty De Huggard and Miss Dulcie Allen, with Mrs Rita Nightingall and Miss Vera Hopton visiting Olinda to provide lessons, Arthur McKay passed his Diploma of Music, 1400 pianos and harmoniums were tuned this year, as most sighted employees are engaged in war work an application was successful with the Director of Manpower to keep some sighted workers in key positions as they may be required to help those blinded by war action, around 25 partially sighted workers have been placed in other factories, several workers passed the Junior First Aid Certificate of St John's Ambulance, and the loss of Dr W.B. The new Central Park was opened on Monday, 21 April 1930 by Mr. W.H. Everard, M.L.A. followed by a sports carnival. The Advertiser reported on Friday, April 25, 1930 that – “Perfect weather prevailed on Monday for the sports gathering in aid of the recently-acquired park near the railway station, and from every point of view the day was a success. The Central Park contains 9½ acres, and has the Diamond Creek on one side and the railway line on the other. It cost £760, of which the council contributed £500, and the citizens, are finding the balance. Already about £80 has been spent in levelling, and a pavilion has been erected by the footballers, who will use the ground for training until it is sufficiently, improved for matches. There is ample shade along the banks of the creek, where there were numerous picnic parties. The committee has already done some planting on the railway side of the park, and where the trees grow on the higher side, overlooking the arena, the natural stand will have shade, command a view of the events, and have the trees on the banks of the creek in the distance. There were between 600 and 700 people present, many in motor cars having a little difficulty in, finding their way under the aqueduct to the ground, but the council is at present effecting improvements to the road. A merry-go round was a source of pleasure to the children, and the Northcote Soldiers and Citizens Band under Bandmaster Gore, de-lighted everyone with their varied selections of good music.” “Cr. E. J. Andrew, president of the Park Committee, said it was the first function held in the park, and although the citizens have guaranteed £420 towards it, there is still some-thing owing. Mr. W. H. Everard, M.L.A., who can always be relied upon to attend any gathering which draws the people together, said that he and Mrs. Everard had great pleasure in being present to declare the park open. He congratulated the Eltham people upon their public spirit, and the new park would be more appreciated in years to come. The other park is a splendid one, but it is far away, and one is required close to the station, so that young people can have a day's enjoyment, without having to go far from the station. The trouble in Victoria is not having enough parks. The early settlers did a lot in getting park lands, but the present generation is not doing enough. Eltham people are entitled to the highest commendation for their action, and Cr. Andrew and the council are to be thanked for what they have done. What is wanted is ingress and egress so that people can get in comfortably. When he was motoring in his wife said, "Surely you are not going down that precipice," and he replied that he would go anywhere where the people were.
