... ‘Signature Books’ from the Kew branch of the National Bank ...The National Bank of Australasia was formed in 1857. It began commercial operations in Queen Street, Melbourne in 1858. The Bank’s first branch in Kew opened at 87 High Street in 1885. A second building, on the corner of Walpole and Brougham Streets, designed by Inskip & Robertson, replaced the first branch in 1888. The second building remains, albeit in a somewhat altered state. In 1977, the President of the Kew Historical Society received two historic ‘Signature Books’ from the Kew branch of the National Bank of Australia.Important and unique record of names, occupations, addresses and signatures of customers of the branch. A number of signatures belong to individuals of statewide significance. Other information such as customer occupations may be unique.Ledger containing information about customers of the National Bank of Australasia's Kew Branch for the years 1884-1894. The ledger (L8091) was purchased on 29/5/84 from Sands & McDougall, Manufacturing Stationers, 46&48 Collins Street West, Melbourne. The pages of the ledger have printed columns including: No. | Date | Name and Description (to be clearly written off by a member of the bank) | Signature | Initials of Bank Officer. As used, the pages are organised alphabetically by customer name. On each page, sequential numbering extends across the years 1884-1894. Additional pieces of advice from customers are clipped through the page over the customer's signature. At the front of the minutes is an index of names for some of the people referred to in the minutes of the Finance/Executive Commitees, with relevant page numbers. Held at the office of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, these minutes contain information on bank balances, corerspondence received and replied to, receipts expenditure, accounts and other business discussed. This included concerts, applications for pensions and a request by the General Committee to fund a talking book machine for the Kooyong Club House, but that "Sir Ian Fraser, in the House of Commons, had said that talking books were still in the experimental stage" (p172). 1 paper registerassociation for the advancement of the blind -

September – Miss A Raleigh was elected Magazine Secretary October- 26 members present. Penny Collection for Million Members Fund November December – Mrs Swan gave demonstration of basketry, using stringy bark, Eucalyptus bark and reeds 1939 February 1939 – 18 members present. Branch total 50. Donation towards Pedal Transmitting Set. Inquiries made of Shire Council re permission to fence War Memorial March April – cost of fence material beyond Branch Funds May- 24 members present June, July, August – birthday celebrations. It is understood that this receipt book came into the LDHS collection via PROV-Place of Deposit arrangements, but it is not clear when this happened. Two other Library receipt books were donated by Golden Plains Shire in 2017 as part of PROV-POD arrangements. See Registration nos. 2019-302 and 2019-303."Ritewell" carbon-copy cash receipt book (No. 298), used at Linton Free Library between 1946 and 1948. Receipts numbered 1-27 record monies collected by the librarian, Mrs. Howard (for subscriptions etc) paid over to the Library honorary secretary, R. W. Leask.
