The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.The McKenzie Children: Late one night in 1934, Mr Bryant West and Mr Loton heard cries for help from the vicinity of the Cowes Jetty. Attempts were made to save a woman and the children. Sadly only the adult could be rescued. The three young bodies were later recovered and buried in the cemetery. Article in the Camperdown Chronicle (Vic. : 1877 - 1954), Saturday 7 June 1902, page 3 "PERSONAL. "Punch" has the following with reference to the death of the late Mr. Charles Shuter:—The cable message which was received last Monday an-nouncing the death on last Saturday of Mr. Charles Shuter of Wykenham Lodge, Toorak, will occasion much regret. When Mr. Shuter arrived in Victoria about forty-seven years ago he was soon appointed a goldfields commissioner and used to relate that the office was full of responsibility, he had frequently for his only pillow nuggets covered with cloth for safety. After some years he was appointed police magistrate, while still quite young, and held this office till he was pensioned some years ago. Then, when the Old Age Pensions came into force, he was recalled from retirement and put on the commission. A few years ago the heart ailment from which he had long suffered began to grow more severe, and he left with his wife and youngest daughter to travel in Europe. Recent letters showed that he was steadily growing worse at Nice, where he was living quietly, and he succumbed on 31st May. His widow, who was a Miss Lord, survives him, and nine of their eleven children. The eldest son, a doctor, died many years ago. Then came Mr. Frank Shuter, a grazier near Albury ; Mrs. Murray Puckle, of Toorak ; Mr. Clement Shuter, solicitor, and Dr. Ernest Shuter, both settled near Camperdown; Mr. Edward Shuter, surveyor; the late Mrs. L. Bernard Hall, Mrs. George Higghins, of Malvern ; Mr. Joseph Shuter, in the English Navy; Captain Reginald Shuter, of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, who has for some time been on active service in the South African war; and Miss Lucy Shuter, who was travelling with her parents. Mr. Shuter's accounts of the early days of the colonies are most interesting. The Elverland, a New Zealand barque, was in Victoria in August 1906. It was wrecked in January 1907 near the Three Kings Islands (Manawatāwhi) on its way to Auckland from Newcastle with a cargo of coal. The Marriage Register lists Harold Priestley Simpson and Amy Dora Walker as the bride and groom, and the wedding date as 14th of February 1928. The photograph uses the personal Harry and Dora, instead of the formal Harold and Amy. In the Register, Amy started signing her name as Dora. before correcting it. The photograph shows that weddings took place at the Chapel during the late 1920's, and the style of weddings at the time. This includes the type of outfits worn, such as the length of the veil and the type of bouquet carried. Dora's Bridesmaids are depicted in 2 other images in the MTSV collection also an image of the chapel decked with flowers for the occasion. The article in the Herald of the day describes the event: "WEDDING AT SEAMEN'S CHAPEL Reception at Hotel Windsor The pretty little chapel at the Sea men's Institute was packed with interested friends this afternoon, when Miss Dora Walker, one of the Mission's most enthusiastic and efficient voluntary helpers, chose it as the setting for her marriage with Mr H. P. Simpson, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Simpson, of Mornington. A group of her fellow workers decorated the chapel with lovely pink and white gladioli, carnations and roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Weller, chaplain of the Mission, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. W. Walker, of Manning road, East Malvern. She wore a lovely ivory georgette frock, the finely tucked skirt being fashioned with a deep transparent hem of Chantilly lace. Over it fell a beautiful Honiton lace veil mounted on tulle and arranged to give the ef fect of a train. Fragrant white roses composed her bouquet. Two attendants followed her down the aisle — her sister, Miss Molly Walker, and Miss Ella Kendall — both wearing dainty shrimp pink georgette frocks and large crinoline straw hats in the same shade with a dainty edging of tulle. They carried bouquets of pink cactus dahlias nnd delphiniums. Mr Louis Buscombe was best man, and Mr George Thompson grooms man. After the ceremony Mr and Mrs Walker entertained about 50 guests at the Hotel Windsor."The photograph shows St. Peter chapel was being used for weddings in 1928. The Anglican church has been used for weddings since being finished in 1917. The Marriage Register shows that these weddings were legal in the Commonwealth of Australia, and lists Church of England as the denomination for this wedding. Miss Amy Dora Simpson (nee Walker) had a long association with the Mission, first as a young Volunteer with the Ladies Harbour Light Guild circa WW1, and through to her wedding in early 1928 and beyond. The flag was donated by Mrs A. M. Mitchell Craigwood Convalescent Hospital Como WA "This flag was made by my Grandmother, Elizabeth Nicholls nee Tallack. It was used as a decoration to welcome Lord Hopeton (Hopetown) to Sandford sometime previous to 1883, when he was still a Viscount. I can't remember his name. No doubt Mr H.K. Kahan is no doubt quite correct in these dates and could find no record of the earlier visit. My mother Phillippa was a young girl at the time and sang at the concert in his honor "Will ye no come back again". It must have been before 1883 because in that year at the age of 18 she married. After the concert he asked that the young lady and her mother be presented. Next day he came to afternoon tea. A great honor in those days". Phillippa Tallack Nicholls was born 1865, Sandford, and married in 1883 to Patrick Maguire. (Digger Pioneer Index 1836 to 1888). There was a Royal Visit in 1881 by the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of York and their party to the district and this appears to be the visit that Mrs Mitchell is referring to. In 2005, Casterton and District Historical Society Inc. donated the flag to the Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection for the citizens of Casterton.Five 5-pointed stars forming the constellation of the Southern Cross on a field of royal blue. Reproduced on p21 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Mrs. R. Thornton notifies that she has taken over the Kangaroo Ground Hotel from Mr. Walker, and the house will be made attractive for weekenders, the table, wines, and spirits being A1 quality" - Advertiser 7 July, 1922" Mrs Ruby C. Thornton sold her interest in the Kangaroo Ground Hotel in September 1928 and moved away after seven years in the district. This photo is therefore dated between July 1922 and 1928. Other newspaper articles identify Mrs Thornton's first name. The lady to the left of frame appears to be taking a photograph of the car in front of the hotel. This may be Mrs Ruby Thornton taking a picture of her car in front of her hotel. A young boy with others standing near their horse and buggy look on. The property was destroyed by fire at 1.45 am on Friday 8 August 1930. The licensee was Mr Hugh Crichton who had taken over from Ruby Thornton. He and his wife just managed to escape the fire with nothing but their night attire. The property was owned by Mr Bruce Donaldson of Ivanhoe and had been erected over 60 years earlier (according to the Advertiser). The new Central Park was opened on Monday, 21 April 1930 by Mr. W.H. Everard, M.L.A. followed by a sports carnival. The Advertiser reported on Friday, April 25, 1930 that – “Perfect weather prevailed on Monday for the sports gathering in aid of the recently-acquired park near the railway station, and from every point of view the day was a success. The Central Park contains 9½ acres, and has the Diamond Creek on one side and the railway line on the other. It cost £760, of which the council contributed £500, and the citizens, are finding the balance. Already about £80 has been spent in levelling, and a pavilion has been erected by the footballers, who will use the ground for training until it is sufficiently, improved for matches. There is ample shade along the banks of the creek, where there were numerous picnic parties. The committee has already done some planting on the railway side of the park, and where the trees grow on the higher side, overlooking the arena, the natural stand will have shade, command a view of the events, and have the trees on the banks of the creek in the distance. There were between 600 and 700 people present, many in motor cars having a little difficulty in, finding their way under the aqueduct to the ground, but the council is at present effecting improvements to the road. A merry-go round was a source of pleasure to the children, and the Northcote Soldiers and Citizens Band under Bandmaster Gore, de-lighted everyone with their varied selections of good music.” “Cr. E. J. Andrew, president of the Park Committee, said it was the first function held in the park, and although the citizens have guaranteed £420 towards it, there is still some-thing owing. Mr. W. H. Everard, M.L.A., who can always be relied upon to attend any gathering which draws the people together, said that he and Mrs. Everard had great pleasure in being present to declare the park open. He congratulated the Eltham people upon their public spirit, and the new park would be more appreciated in years to come. The other park is a splendid one, but it is far away, and one is required close to the station, so that young people can have a day's enjoyment, without having to go far from the station. The trouble in Victoria is not having enough parks. The early settlers did a lot in getting park lands, but the present generation is not doing enough. Eltham people are entitled to the highest commendation for their action, and Cr. Andrew and the council are to be thanked for what they have done. What is wanted is ingress and egress so that people can get in comfortably. When he was motoring in his wife said, "Surely you are not going down that precipice," and he replied that he would go anywhere where the people were. Plaque commemorating the opening of the Yarra River Footbridge opened by Nillumbik Shire Mayor Cr. Tony Ranuic, Member for Eltham, Mr Steve Herbert MP, and Manningham City Mayor, Cr. Patricia Young on Monday 30 August 2004. Nillumbik Shire Couuncil acknowledges the support of the Victorian State Government and City of Manningham. With the creation of the township of Mount Beauty in 1946 the SECV made every effort to provide wholesome activities for the 3000+ people suddenly living in the remote new community. GRA-Y was an American system of Gymnastics for men and boys under the umbrella of the YMCA. Sepia photograph of Hunniford’s Eltham Post Office, Main Road near Bridge Street, Eltham, c.1888 (Postmistress Anne Hunniford possibly on left). The building originally had a shingle roof. Anne Hamilton born 1814 Co Tyrone, Ireland married Michael Head Burgoyne (1820-1843) in 1839, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. They had two children, Charlotte Caroline (1840) and John James Thomas Neville (Londonderry, Ireland 1844) Whilst pregnant with John, husband Michael died. Following John’s birth, she emigrated to Victoria, Australia where she married Thomas Hunniford in 1854. Daughter Anne Jane Hunniford was born in Eltham in 1855. Anne (Annie) Jane Hunniford and John James Thomas Neville Burgoyne were half siblings. In the mid 1860s Annie Hunniford succeeded her father, Thomas Hunniford as Post Mistress for Eltham. Photo dated based on advertising on façade of the building by Annie’s half-brother, John James Thomas Burgoyne promotes his services as the area manager for John M’Ewan and Co, Auctioneers as well as him being agent for the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, National Insurance Company of Australasia, Federal Mutual Livestock Association of Australasia, and as a House, Land, Estate, Insurance and Financial agent. This was the time period that he placed advertising for same in the local paper. Australia Post: Gold brought life to the township - Diamond Valley News, Tuesday July 2, 1985, p17 On February 1, 1854, the first Eltham Post Office was established, commencing an association between the township and the Postmaster-General's Department that has continued for 131 years. At that time, the number of permanent residents would have been fairly small, probably less than 200. The discovery of gold in June 1851, at Anderson’s Creek, some five miles away, and later at Caledonia Diggings, Queenstown (now known as St Andrews), about 14 miles to the north-east, brought large numbers of prospectors passing through the township, hopefully culling the creeks and gullies for the precious metal. This additional "floating population" brought a greater demand for supplies and for communication with the outside world, and so it helped in the development of Eltham. Today, Eltham is a thriving township. It boasts an excellent shopping centre, municipal offices, court house. post office and many other amenities. Eltham continued to develop at a leisurely pace. During 1860, a total of just over 8000 postal articles were handled at the Eltham Post Office. By 1862, the mail route was "to and from Melbourne by way of Eltham and Kangaroo Ground, three times a week, by coach". There was also a branch mail that operated between Eltham and Greensborough, three times weekly. This was also conveyed by coach. Some time between 1864 and 1868 the management of the post office passed from Thomas Hunniford to his daughter, Miss Anne Hunniford, who managed the Eltham Post Office until her death in 1928. A big improvement in communication was provided for Eltham residents when a telegraph office was established at the post office in 1877. During 1923 a manual telephone exchange was provided at Eltham, the first two subscribers being J.J. O’Connor and Eltham Police Station. In 1949 the manual exchange was replaced by an automatic exchange and there were some 150 subscribers. Following the death of postmistress Miss Anne Hunniford in 1928, B.M. Burgoyne was placed temporarily in charge of the office. In 1929, J. N. Burgoyne was appointed postmaster, and he in turn was succeeded by H. C. Burgoyne in 1951. The post office was moved to a new site in 1954, but continued under the charge of Mr Burgoyne. In January 1958 there was a further change of site when the post office was raised to official status and transferred to new premises in Main Rd. William Donoghue was acting postmaster when the new office was opened. In March 1958 Mr W.E. Tovey was appointed postmaster, followed by Douglas McG. Gilmour in 1959. William Donoghue was fully appointed in 1966 and Barry Reichelt followed in 1973, prior to the present postmaster, Peter Jolly in November 1982. Peter is a young man with 18 years' experience. He commenced his training as a postal clerk at the training school in Melbourne in 1968 and was promoted to postal clerk at the Brunswick Post Office in 1969. He was finally transferred as postmaster to Fawkner Post Office in 1980. He has been at Eltham Post Office for the past 2½ years. He is married with one child and lives in Montmorency. The Eltham Post Office employs a staff of 21, of whom seven are indoor staff, 12 are postmen and two are drivers. The postmen in Eltham have an uphill battle delivering mail because of the hilly terrain. Nine of the postmen deliver mail on motorbikes, and the two delivery vans are both four wheel drives. Eltham Post Office services basically a residential area, with deliveries to 5600 homes. This is growing at the rate of 600 homes every 18 months, i.e. about 32 homes per month. Australia Post: Gold brought life to the township - Diamond Valley News, Tuesday July 2, 1985, p17 On February 1, 1854, the first Eltham Post Office was established, commencing an association between the township and the Postmaster-General's Department that has continued for 131 years. At that time, the number of permanent residents would have been fairly small, probably less than 200. The discovery of gold in June 1851, at Anderson’s Creek, some five miles away, and later at Caledonia Diggings, Queenstown (now known as St Andrews), about 14 miles to the north-east, brought large numbers of prospectors passing through the township, hopefully culling the creeks and gullies for the precious metal. This additional "floating population" brought a greater demand for supplies and for communication with the outside world, and so it helped in the development of Eltham. Today, Eltham is a thriving township. It boasts an excellent shopping centre, municipal offices, court house. post office and many other amenities. Eltham continued to develop at a leisurely pace. During 1860, a total of just over 8000 postal articles were handled at the Eltham Post Office. By 1862, the mail route was "to and from Melbourne by way of Eltham and Kangaroo Ground, three times a week, by coach". There was also a branch mail that operated between Eltham and Greensborough, three times weekly. This was also conveyed by coach. Some time between 1864 and 1868 the management of the post office passed from Thomas Hunniford to his daughter, Miss Anne Hunniford, who managed the Eltham Post Office until her death in 1928. This is a book given as a prize to Allan Scarfe in 1942 when he was in Form One at Warrnambool High School. Allan Scarfe, spelled ‘Alan’ in the book inscription, died in 2016. He was a teacher at Warrnambool High School/College for a great number of years and was an author of note. He wrote several works of non-fiction in conjunction with his wife, Wendy, and several novels, mostly crime fiction.This book is of interest because it belonged to Allan Scarfe, a resident of Warrnambool for many years, well-known as a teacher and a writer. It is also of interest as an example of the type of reading material favoured by young boys in the 1940s. This is a hard cover book of 224 pages. The cover is blue with black print on the front cover and spine and a sketch of a sailor on the spine. The dust cover is multi-coloured with sketches of scouts on the front cover and on the spine. The dust cover is ragged at the edges and torn at the bottom part of the spine. The dust cover also has lists of books published by Blackie’s Books. The book has several black and white plates scattered throughout the pages. Suspecting foul play, Stamford called the police who quickly discovered a decomposing body and partially clad body of a young woman in a shallow grave under the fireplace. 'Her skull had been shattered and her throat cut'. Two detectives, Sergeants Considine and Cawsey, began investigations. The previous tenant, a 'Mr. Druin' who had rented the house had since disappeared was the main suspect. 'Druin' had arrived in Australia from England as 'Albert Williams' in December 1891 with his 24 year old wife Emily Mather. The body was Emily's. The crime scene investigation proved difficult as the suspect - whatever his real name- had cleaned up the scene very carefully. Much later it was discovered that the suspect was in fact Frederick Bayley Deeming, a former sailor born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, in 1854. In 1881, Deeming deserted his ship and lived in Sydney where he married and had a family. Deeply in debt, he later burned his business down to claim its insurance value and fled to South Africa before he could be arrested. He is believed to have committed numerous frauds and murders in Africa. Eventually found in Uruguay, he spent time in prison in England for fraud. After being released he married Emily and returned to Australia. After leaving England, British police began investigating him over the murder of Mrs Marie Deeming and her four children. Now using another alias, 'Baron Swanston', Deeming was arrested in Western Australia before he left the country in the company of a young woman, Kate Rounsefell, whom he planned to marry. It seems Kate would have been his next murder victim. Brought back to Victoria, in May 1892, Deeming went on trail for the murder of Emily Mather. Despite a strong defense conducted by a brilliant young barrister and 3 times Australian Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, the evidence against Deeming was overwhelming and he was found guilty. Deeming was hanged at Melbourne Gaol on 23 May 1892. He was known to be responsible for at least 6 murders and may have committed others. Located at 277-279 St Helena Road Saint Helena, Victoria. In 1841 Anthony Beale, born on the Island if St Helena took a pastoral lease on the Plenty River where he built a cottage, St Helena, which ultimately gave this area its name. Beale's wife Katherine Rose, nee Young died in 1856 and he erected "The rose Chapel" to her memory. After his death in 1865 the chapel was willed to the Church of England and consecrated in 1876. It was severely damaged by bushfire in 1957. It was fully restored and rededicated in November 1957. The bell calls parishoners to Sunday services is believed to a have come from the Island of St Helena. Source: Mr. A.E. It is of local historical significance because of its association with the local pioneering family, the Beales, and other notable citizens including Walter Withers and Graham Webster. The cemetery is also the oldest in the municipality, of State significance. The high level of maintenance and the rural ambience contribute to the overall significance of the site. St Katherine's Church building has been reconstructed and is of local historical interest, principally for its value in interpreting the original setting within the Cemetery. It contains stained glass windows of local historical significance, commemorating casualties of the Beale family in World War One. - Victorian Heritage Database This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971).
