This photograph is of Percy Nixon, son of James Nixon and Alice Roberts Percy Nixon married Evelyn Harding. The photographer was Warren, Helena (1871-1962) who was a self-taught photographer who became both the local press correspondent and a producer of humorous trompe l'oeil postcard images. Helena Warren was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. She supplied the photos for the Back-To-Orbost celebration book in 1937 and also designed the Back-To-Orbost badge. She was known for her soft toy making. (by Ivy Rodwell in from Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District by Mary Gilbert). This item is associated with a prominent Orbost family. George Nixon was the son of James and Alice Nixon. The Nixon families were among the earliest settlers on the Snowy River. Warrnambool Bowls’ club was established in 1890. The club was initially established in Liebig St and was the sole club in Warrnambool before the establishment of St. John’s Bowls club in 1926. Warrnambool City Memorial Bowling club was established in 1950 with Lawn tennis and Dennington following in the 1960’s.It was around 1990 that the club moved from Liebig St to Timor St on the site of the St Joseph’s tennis courts. This is a badge of an Australian association of fellmongers, wool sorters and scourers. This group may have been part of the Amalgamated Fellmongers, Wool Sorters and Wool Scourers Union of 1912-1918 or it may have been an earlier association. A fellmonger was a dealer in the hides or skins of animals, especially sheep, or a person who removed the skins from animals. There were several fellmongery and wool scouring establishments in 19th century Warrnambool and district. These included the Dallimore Fellmongery at Lake Gillear, the Bennett Merri Bank Fellmongery at Dennington and the fellmongery businesses of James Evenett and Henry Mawbey on the Merri River in South Warrnambool.Although it has no known local provenance, this badge is of interest because there were several fellmongery establishments in the Warrnambool district in the 19th century so it may have belonged to a local person.This medallion has a gold coloured image of a suspended lamb on a circular royal blue enamel background which in turn is surrounded by a white enamel annulus with text. This is a Nestle badge. Henri Nestle formed the Nestle Company in 1867 with the headquarters based in Switzerland. Today this company is the largest nutrition, health and wellness company in the world. Nestle Australia was established in 1908 and a Nestle factory was established in Dennington (Warrnambool) in 1911. At this time the name, Nestle, was retained but the factory was actually operated by the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. The Dennington factory was for many years the world's largest milk condensery. In 1948 the factory began producing Nescafe coffee. In 2008, after 94 years of operations, the Dennington factory was sold to the New Zealand firm of Fonterra. This badge was issued in 1966 to a member of the committee of the Nestles Cricket Club in Dennington (Warrnambool). The Nestles Milk Factory was established at Dennington in 1911, being one of the few Nestles factories at the time to be opened outside of Europe. During World War One and the 1920s the Dennington Nestles Factory was the world’s largest milk condensery and at its peak in the 1960s and 70s was employing 800 people. It produced the drink, Milo and the coffee, Nescafe (this latter ceasing in 2000). In 2005 the Nestles Factory was taken over by the New Zealand firm, Fonterra and it is due to cease business entirely late in 2019. The Nestles Factory encouraged and sponsored several social and sporting clubs, including the Nestles Cricket Club and the Nestles Rowing Club. The Nestles Cricket Club commenced in 1944 and has been a part of the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association competition since that time. It still operates today under the same name and includes a women’s team. In the 1950s and 60s what we know as netball today was played by women and was known as basketball. No information has been found on this Warrnambool Basketball Association but it is most probable, however, that it was an early organization of men’s basketball teams. The game of basketball, founded in America, has become much more popular in Australia for both men and women in the last three or four decades with the local organization in Warrnambool known as Warrnambool Basketball Inc. and the teams Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids playing in a state-wide competition. These badges issued for a surf carnival held in Warrnambool may have been produced for the 1963 Australian Championship Surf Carnival. It was estimated that 25,000 people were present at these championships held at the Warrnambool beach. The Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1930. Some years previous to this a Warrnambool Surf Bathers and Beach Improvement Association had been established and this group amalgamated with the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club in 1933. Warrnambool claims to be the first surf life saving club in Victoria. The MU on these badges stands for Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. This was one of the most prominent of the benefit societies operating in Warrnambool over the years. Originating in England, Manchester Unity I.O.O.F. was established in Warrnambool in 1860. This benefit society built and opened the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street Warrnambool in 1869 (building still extant but now used for office space). Some years ago the Manchester Unity I. O.O.F. joined with the Australian Natives Association to form a new benefit group, Australia Unity. The Australian army's system of colour patches arose from the need to solve an immediate problem. When the first Australian Imperial Force (AIF) set off for the Middle East in 1914, the only badge it wore was on headgear and jacket collars: the Australian "Rising Sun" emblem, inscribed with the words "Australian Commonwealth Military Forces" (ACMF). Nothing distinguished one regiment from another. The Rising Sun badge, also known as the General Service Badge or the Australian Army Badge, is the official insignia of the Australian Army. The badge is readily identified with the spirit of ANZAC, the legend of the Australian soldier, and the esprit de corps of the Army itself, due to its association with the landings at Gallipoli in 1915. The Rising Sun badge carried a scroll inscribed with the words ‘Australian Commonwealth Military Forces’ and was worn throughout both World Wars. There were, however, a number of variations of the badge; a special version was struck for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902 and there were badges of the Commonwealth Horse and the Australian Instructional Corps, each with its respective title on the scrolls.
