Ararat Gallery TAMA
Functional object, Hama - yaki Tai, c. 1900s
‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ was an exhibition that toured to 10 Australian and 11 New Zealand public galleries in 1979 and 1980. The touring exhibition comprised 221 objects of traditional Japanese packaging which extended from ceramics, wood and paper to woven fibre containers. At the conclusion of the tour, The Japan Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council donated the vast majority of the exhibition to the Ararat Gallery for its permanent collection. Combining the natural qualities of bamboo, paper and straw with delicate craftsmanship, these unique objects express Japanese aesthetics as applied through fibre crafts. In Japan, the qualities and traits of natural materials are exploited rather than hidden. The texture of straw, the septa of bamboo are not concealed but lovingly incorporated into the whole. In 1979 Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ wrote: “In no way self-conscious or assertive, these wrappings have an artless and obedient air that greatly moves the modern viewer. They are whispered evidence of the Japanese ability to create beauty from the simplest products of nature. They also teach us that wisdom and feeling are especially important in packaging because these qualities, or the lack of them, are almost immediately apparent. What is the use of a package if it shows no feeling?” The descriptions of the featured objects were written by Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’, 1979.Gift of the Japan-Australia Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council, 1981The model for this package is from Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, is the sedge hat formerly worn by farmers and travellers. The package contains a whole baked tai (sea bream), a fish much relished in Japan, and it is said that the feudal lords of yesteryear often included tai in wrappings like this among their gifts to the shogun when they returned to the capital from their fiefs. - Professor Hideyuki Oka, curator.japanese art, japanese packaging, tsutsumi, gift giving -

Furniture, Overmantel carved wood c1900, c1900
Early fireplaces were very wide and deep, which allowed for multiple pots to be cooking simultaneously, but also caused a lot of heat loss As the hub of the house, a burning hearth provided heat, housed the fire for cooking and baking, and served as the nucleus of family gatherings. As the Victorian age progressed, fireplaces became more ornate, with overmantels and columns. This elaborately carved wood overmantel was used in the family home of Mrs Brailly in Moorabbin Shire c1900This ornately carved wood overmantel cupboard is an example of the furnishings early settlers used to make their houses attractivec1900An elaborately carved wood overmantel c1900mantel piece, overmantel cupboards, mrs brailly, box cottage ormond, box william, box elizabeth, early settlers, market gardeners, cooking utensils, kitchenware, castiron cooking pots, blacksmiths, slow cooking, moorabbin shire, bentleigh, mckinnon, highett, cheltenham, -

Relay Protection Instrument, Circa 1950's
This protection relay apparatus (a large electrical fuse), which permits the easy monitoring and disconnection of faulty electrical apparatus connected to the large SEC Victoria Hydro Scheme's electrical power producing generators. These generators are powered by the hydro force of "stored" water at a higher altitude. The establishment of both the NSW and Victorian Hydro Schemes was achieved from the early 1900's to the 1960's. At this point in time the need for additional power sources to quench both an industrial and domestic demand for electricity was purely an economic and not and environmental (carbon reduction) factor. This hydro scheme was instigated by "the Government of the day" as a bold move and was the major force of the World War II refugee and "technical" workforce inclusion of skilled and unskilled migration into the Australian environment. Although this mass "invasion" of workers with families was thought of in some circles as intrusive, the expansion of population post war years and its integration into the Australian rural sector, produced the multi- lingual multi-cultural diversity of later years. This protection relay is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as its use was introduced during the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Although only a small apparatus it was part of the explosion of human resources into the valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both an industrial and a larger residential community. This evolution in the valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape but also the socio-economic expansion which permitted other "tourist" based industries into the valley. This protection relay unit has a black painted metal shell with four copper enclosed "prongs" fastened to the rear of the housing(from a bake-lite plate) . Between these "prongs" are four "empty" points allowing additional "screw on" bases. The front glass enclosed meter and recorder allows for the identification and automatic disconnection of any faulty equipment connected to the main power generator. This equipment acts similarly to a modern day circuit breaker found on the electrical circuit boards of residential homes. On the top section of the front panel "ASEA" to the left "Made in Sweden" and to the right "Frabrique en Suede" below this "RIS" below this a graph and next to it two columns of numbers and a pointer for each setkiewa hydro electricity scheme, victorian state electricity commission, relays, generators -

John Davies ran the bakery until 1923, at which time his son, Fred “F.T.” Davies, became proprietor. The business continued to grow under Fred, who turned it into one of the most successful industries in Ballarat. Fred fitted the bakery with a Perkins Continuous Oven, which was quite revolutionary for the time. The bakery was also fitted with Scotch ovens, which were used for ordinary bread-baking, and were worked manually.
