Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, The Architect and Society
This is a manuscript associated with the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Convention, "Civic Architecture, the Architect and Society" which discusses city development. Boyd argues that an Australian architectural style is growing with the contemporary generation of architects departing from international modern architectural influences from which they studied. Boyd explains how a pattern of Australian architecture can be seen through materiality and the expression of structure.Typewritten (c copy), foolscap, 4 pages (two copies)Minor handwritten edit on both copiesroyal australian institute of architects, convention, technology, australian cities, urbanism, australian architecture, international modern architecture, walkabout, robin boyd, manuscript -

Rutherglen Historical Society
Document, Thomas Drenen, Rutherglen by T Drenen, Editor, Rutherglen Sun, 1927-1928
Information from donor: "Item 2 has a long history and came to me two years ago when younger brother Pat downsized from Mentone to East Brighton. ... when mother Annie passed away [he] took possession of a roll top writing desk from the premises in which we grew up. To fit the desk in his new unit, the roll top was removed and this original manuscript was found. Silver fish have attacked the paper that is now perished but I was able to carefully obtain a photocopy and preserve a copy of Thomas Drenen's handwriting."Thomas Drenen was born 1861 and died in 1932. He was the editor of the local paper, The Rutherglen Sun, from 1886 until his retirement. This makes him unique in the opportunity to gather information on the history of the Rutherglen district. This manuscript was written by him for broadcast on radio station 3AR (which became a part of ABC Radio National). While the donor was not certain of the date of the broadcast, evidence from the document leads to the conclusion that it was between July 1927 and September 1928, as he mentions the recently opened Soldiers Memorial Hall (officially opened in July 1927) and the new Convent that was under construction (Mt Carmel Convent was officially opened in September 1928). [information on dates from the Indigo Shire Heritage Study, 2002]Original is a hand written document of 12 pages that has been badly attacked by silverfish. Copy was photocopied before original continued to deteriorate. On sticker on plastic sleeve of copy: "Robert Drenen | Copy of Grandfather Thos Drenen - Broadcast on 3AR. Unknown Year. Thos D passed away July 1932"drenen family, rutherglen, rutherglen sun -

Letter, Hand written copy National Bank V A Bostock, Circa 1900
Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This letter shows correspondence between the two firms of solicitors and is demanding payment of £500.00 as settlement by Bostock, to the National Bank. This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. The document itself is indicative of its time and provides an insight into the details and terms of such documents at the time.Cream lined paper, with Solicitors letterhead printed in top left corner. Letter is hand written in black ink. Watermarked Cowan Extra strongKlingender, O’Mahony & Murray Solicitors at Warrnambool, Koroit, Port Fairy, Terang and Mortlake. Telephone No. 51. Poster, Reward Poster for the Capture of Peter Lalor and Black (copy), c1987
After the Eureka Stockade the government offered a reward for the leaders of the rebellion. Peter Lalor's name is incorrectly spelt 'Lawlor' in the poster, which suggests the correct pronunciation of Lalor.A Eureka Stockade reward poster as reproduced in Withers 'History of Ballarat'. The poster is black on white and relates to a 400 pound reward offered for Peter Lalor and Black after the Eureka Stockade. Peter Lalor is described as 5 feet 11 inches in height, age 35, dark hair, whiskers dark brown and shaved under the chin, no moustache, long face, rather good looking, and is a well made man. Black is described as over 6 feet tall, straight figure, slight build, bright red hair worn in a general rather long and brushed backwards, red and large whiskers, meeting under the chine, blue eyes, large thin nose, ruddy complexion, and rather small mouth.ballarat, eureka stockade, peter lalor, lalor, lawlor, black, william haines, haines, ballarat reform league, reward poster -
