Three dates are listed as official Heritage Week events, Sundays 16th and 23rd April and Saturday 22nd. In addition, there will be a walk on Saturday 15th for Society Members. All walks will start at 1:00 p.m. in Panther Place near Shillinglaw Cottage. Each will take about four hours and the distance is about 5km. This is a photograph of a group of students of the Orbost Higher Elementary School dressed in costume performing "The Poppy Song:" on a stage. In the photograph are: Dolly Broome; Mary Reynolds; Lily Perry; Hilda Guy; Rene Parker; Madge Grose; Audrey Cameron; Annie Gibbs, Zenie Irvine and Violet Gibbs. This is probably the song connected with a poem called “In Flanders Fields” written by Major John McCrae, a Canadian surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade and stationed at Ypres salient, Belgium, in the spring of 1915. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . It is the sole senior educational institution. In the image are adverts for Col. W. de Basil's Covent Garden show at Her Majesty's Theatre, Fosters Lager, Hoyts De Luxe Bourke St a Richard Greene film. Both Hazel and Mabel Pye were artists and their father built a studio at the back of the 12 Loch Street home. The family were also associated with the amateur theatre group 'The Benwerrin Players'. Information from Frank Stamford (via Surrey Hills History Facebook page), March 2017: "This photograph was taken around 1918. It is a family occasion. The four people sitting down, from left to right, are Clara (Dolly) Stamford nee Noar (my grandmother), Frank Stamford (my grandfather), Laurence Stamford (my father, who was born in 1904), and Hazel Pye (a cousin of my father). The three people standing, from left to right, are Alice Pye (nee Noar) - mother of Mabel and Hazel, and sister of Clara, Reg Stamford (brother of Laurence, and born in 1900), and Mabel Pye." Fives images of the workshop machinery used by the Queensland Industrial Institute for the Blind in the manufacture of various products. 1 - Pitched brooms being made by Stewart Jewell (left) and Jack Dollier (right). 2 - Unknown worker at a basket station making a cane basket, surrounded by finished examples. 3 - Snowy Willis oversees the operation of the machine that bores holes into brush heads. 4 - Unknown worker operating a coir matting machine. There were apparently 10 such machines in use at the time this image was taken. 5 - Snowy Willis checking the bobbins being filled from a giant spool. Typed foolscap two sided document with information about the early history of the Bendigo Goldfield. Topics include the first gold discovery, how gullies were worked, quartz reefing, gold cakes, hand dollies and Chilian mills. Some brief statistics of the Bendigo goldfield include the total gold yield of 17,370,561 ounces plus 5,000,000 oz sold outside Bendigo. The greatest depth reached by any mine in the State, 4,593 feet below surface, or 3,700 feet below sea-level, was attained by the Victoria Quartz Company. About 100 shafts exceed a depth of 1,000 feet, of which 40 are between 2,000 and 3,000 feet deep, fifteen are between 3,000 and 4,000 feet and two are over 4,000 feet.bendigo, mining, mines department -

Four photographs from a Supplement dated Thursday, November 14, 1901. Top photo is a picture of the Victoria Quartz poppet legs, buildings and a large chimney. The second photo is a puddling machine. In the photo is a circular area with water in it and an island in the centre with a log across it. A horse is harnessed to one end of the log. There is a man behind the horse and a dray in the background. The third photo is a whip. It is a pole held at an angle by two smaller poles. At the top is a wheel. There is a rope over the wheel with a bucket on the end. There are two men to the right of the whip. The bottom picture is a man dollying. He has a half barrel and he is working the water with a short pole with a handle on each side. The barrel has a drainage pipe in the bottom. There is also a dish, two buckets and a shovel around the barrel. There are two photocopies of the page. Printed photocopy of Squizzy Taylor grave. An excerpt from John James Whitty’s “Been everywhere and seen everything”, hand dated by Claire Barton 11/06/2013. The excerpt mentions driver Whitty picking up Squizzy Taylor and Ida Pender on a few occasions, namely to take Pender dancing at the Palais, and how Squizzy never gave him any trouble. Handwritten notes by Claire Barton with regards to an interview on radio station 774 on 11/06/2013 with author and defence lawyer James Morton. The fact that the school had first operated temporarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local inhabitants as they saw their offspring commence their education under the guidance of HT Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second HT, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner. The school now had accommodation for 30 pupils; the teacher's welfare was considered because quarters of two rooms were attached. As the population increased so did the needs of the school. When the stables were empty in the late 1980s visit, he vividly recalled the names of the horses he had handled in his youth. When the draft horse became obsolete with the introduction of tractors and trucks this interest continued with the breeding and training of harness racers. Darlingsford Drafts and Ponies.
