They were novelty pieces of carving requiring considerable skill and patience and walking sticks were usually hand-made in those days. This walking stick has no known local provenance but it is a fine example of a hand-made household item of 100 to 150 years ago This is a piece of brown wood with the shaft of the stick carved to a smooth round shape tapering down towards the end and with a snake shape carved over the shaft from the same piece of wood. The head of the snake juts out from the shaft top and the snake has scaly patterns worked on its surface. The stick has a larger round knob at the top and a metal covering at the bottom. In the days before refrigerators were common household items the barrel would have been a useful portable ice carrier for use in a hotel bar or at a table. The plaque on the side of the barrel suggests that the barrel could have been awarded as a trophy or prize in a sporting competition. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of a household item from times past.This is a wooden barrel with silver-coloured metal bands on the top and bottom of the barrel, a metal handle and a detachable metal lid. A metal plaque is attached to the side of the barrel with metal pins. The inside of the barrel has a ceramic insert with a metal rim. The practice of brushing the teeth for hygienic reasons began in the 18th century and became more popular in the 19th century. Today matches are used only irregularly. This match box holder was an advertising tool for Roy Pearson who had a motor service station at 100 Kepler Street, Warrnambool in the 1930s. The business was called the Super Service Station and Pearson was the agent for Triumph and Citroen cars. He sold petrol and used cars and did car repairs. In 1937 the business was run by Chorlton and GrahamThis item is of considerable interest showing the type of advertising used in Warrnambool in 1935. Apart from its utilitarian use of holding a match box, it is an advertising tool containing a 1935 calendar and it also uses humour as its main appeal. The holder features a face which shows a happy man when held one way (“This man calls at Pearson’s Service Station for satisfaction’) and a grumpy man when it is turned around (‘This man wishes he did call’). This is a metal match box holder, painted blue with yellow printing and an image of a man’s face. It has a 1935 calendar. It is much rusted on the inside and a little blotched on the outside. ‘Roy H. Socks were mostly made of wool and when holes appeared, (particularly in the heel) they had to be darned, usually in a criss-cross pattern. The darning mushroom gave the darner a good smooth and stable surface. Many of these darning tools were homemade. The darner could also have been used to mend torn sleeves or other items of clothing. Some people may still use a darning mushroom today but in general socks are not darned but disposed of when holes appear. This darning mushroom has no known local provenance but it is a good example of a household item of times past. This is a light-coloured wooden darning tool. The mushroom-shaped top is attached to a handle which is elongated at the bottom end and has a slight ridge near the base and a small hole at the end. The Gramophone Company was an early recording company based in the United Kingdom and was the parent organization for the His Master’s Voice label of recording devices. The company was founded in 1897 and merged in 1931 with another company to form E.M.I. (Electric and Musical Industries) but the name The Gramophone Company continued in Britain until the 1970s. Gramophones were a popular household item from the late 19th century until the mid 20th century when more sophisticated recording and playing devices were invented. These gramophone needles is of some interest as an example of entertainment devices of the past. It will be useful for display. .1This is a metal box with a lid containing an image of a dog and a phonograph (‘His Master’s Voice’) painted in white and brown on a dark blue background. Inside the tin are about 150 metal gramophone needles, most of them being a little rusted. The needles are covered with a sheet of brown paper with yellow printing. The tin itself is rusted and the printing is discoloured.
