The first known residents were Mr and Mrs Walter Pretty and their family who moved there in 1856. Mr William Collins took out a miner's right in 1886 and Mr and Mrs Frank Lowe bought the freehold when the site was auctioned in 1930.History of families associated with the property originally leased on a miner's right near the corner of Yarra Street and Cemetery Road circa 1850s, and later had a frontage to the Main Road with access from to Taroona Avenue.

Dr Gary Presland studied history at LaTrobe University, Melbourne and archaeology at the University of London. His major research interests have been in Aboriginal and natural history of the Melbourne area. He researched The Place for a Village as a PdD, in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at The University of Melbourne. His previous books include Aboriginal Melbourne and For God's sake send the trackers. Gary Presland is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, an Honorary Fellow at The University of Melbourne and an Honorary Associate of Museum Victoria, where he was the 2001 Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Fellow. In 1848, Francis Rogerson form Dumfriesshire, Scotland purchased 80 acres of land at Kangaroo Ground on which he built a two-roomed bark hut. He named the property afterr the many Bronzewings and Wonga Pigeons in the area. Ewen Hugh Cameron moved to Pigeon Bank the same year he was elected to Parliament as the Member for Evelyn. At the time he moved in, Pigeon Bank had six rooms and the present water well. He made further extensive additions and lived there until his death in 1915.
