This is a photograph of Councillor Donald Munro who represented Central Riding on the Orbost Shire Council. Donald Munro, with his brother, Archie carried on a boot-making business in one of the rooms of a three-storeyed barn at Lochiel. The Munros were musically inclined and through them a band was formed in 1889. Donald Munro was involved in many of the town's activities. Used in the timber industry in the Orbost district. This is a two person operated cross cut saw which functions as a pit saw. A log is placed over a pit lengthways. The man on the top walks along the log and pulls the saw upwards, and he man below pulls the saw downwards. This saw therefore cuts in both directions. This type of saw was often used in the ship building industry for cutting planks.A long raker saw which has been installed into the Slab Hut Shed in a vertical position as a pit saw. Milk was delivered by the "milk man" direct to the homes of consumers. Delivery to homes in Orbost and district and was made initially by horse and cart and later by truck. .The dairy industry in Orbost and the surrounding area has always been a major contributor to the milk supply of Victoria.A clear glass half-pint milk or cream bottle. Moulded in two halves, made to take either a cork or cardboard disc pressed into top with wire grip. The bottle was meant to be recycled and the glass is therefore quite thick. Snowy River Dry Cleaners was situated in Stanley Street, Orbost (previously a hat factory). There was also a shop in the CBD of Orbost. Basil Dowie moved his dry cleaning business from Nicholson Street to 31 Stanley Street where Stuart Hats had been. He had originally bought the business from Laurie Harrington in August 1950. The butter stamp rolling pin was used in The Orbost Butter factory.It was rolled across the butter in a wooden box, lined with a wax paper.Bicarbonate of soda was added to the butter to stop it from going rank.The first shipment in about 1893 to England went rank and was only good for axle grease on wagons and carts.The milk was brought to the factory by horse and dray.Most people would take the whey home for their pigs,which were abundant on the farms in the Orbost district. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893 and was an important source of income to the Orbost district. Large, hand carved, round wooden roller with handle at each end. There is a central carved word, with a pattern of raised squares either side of the carved word and an uncarved area at either end of the roller. The stamp rests on a wooden plinth. This photograph shows vehicles and people being ferried across the Snowy River during the 1934 flood. The Orbost punt was reinstated on a temporary basis following damage to the bridge. Damage estimated at £500,000 was caused by the 1934 floods in the Orbost district. This 1934 flood was devastating, destroying a section of the 1922 Orbost bridge, wrecking fences, bridges and roads, dumping silt and debris on the rich river flats and drowning cattle. This account was sent fro H. James & Co to Robert Pullar Cameron. Henry James (1860-1932) was a well-known identity in the Orbost district. He was a stock agent and auctioneer who helped to establish the seed bean industry in Orbost. He was the second secretary of the Snowy River Shipping Co. as well as a shire councillor and prominent member of MUIOOF. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. Henry James (1860-1932) was a well-known identity in the Orbost district. During the Great Depression from 1929 to 1932, rabbit trapping was a means of survival for many people. Rabbits provided meat and pelts which were sold for making felt hats such as the Akubra. Rabbit populations are controlled in the 21st century by poisoning, destroying or 'ripping' burrows (warrens), biological control with rabbit haemorrhagic disease and myxomatosis, and by shooting. Rabbit-proof fences also prevent the spread of rabbits into some areas. (ref. Powerhouse Museum) This trap was used in the Orbost district. Steel-jawed rabbit traps were widely used in urban and rural Australia from 1880 to 1980. This trap is symbolic of the battle that Australians have waged against burgeoning rabbit populations for over a century. Rabbits cause enormous damage to Australian soils and biodiversity. The introduction of rabbits to this country was an environmental disaster.A rusted iron rabbit trap which consists of a pair of jaws held closed by spring tension and a triggering mechanism. When the trap is triggered the jaws close over the top of the bridge, plate and tongue mechanism that is designed to trigger the trap. A chain is attached by a hook on the bent end of the trap's spring with a long steel spike looped over the last link of the other end of the chain. The trap is designed so that the metal jaws snap shut against each other when the trap is activated by the application of weight to the pressure plate. In use, traps are set with open jaws, buried lightly just below the surface of the earth. When an animal steps on the pressure plate, the jagged teeth of the jaws snap around the animal's leg, usually breaking bone and sinew. Thus the animal is immobilised. rabbit-trap rural

The official Newmerella Football Club was probably started in 1913. Simon Gargan was the founder of the Newmerella Football Club.Prior to that teams played socially in Orbost and district. This item probably belonged to A. WaitFootball clubs, through their many changes, have always been an important social fabric of the community. Sport is often regarded as an important part of life in rural Australia, contributing to community identity, sense of place, social interaction and good health. The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. The Ballarat Horticultural Society was established in 1859 by a group of thirteen men with the aim of establishing an association for all lovers of horticulture. There were many such societies throughout the colonies making a contribution to their communities.Samuel Richardson, with his family, was a very early settler in the Orbost / Marlo district. These cloths were embroidered by Mrs J.W. Bird of Orbost for her daughter's trousseau. Hilda Bird, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs J.W. Bird married Mr. John Russell of Caulfield in April 1940. Jane Annie (Jean) Herbert married John Whitney Bird on December 18 1902. she was a long-time member of the St James Church of England choir and a very keen tennis player. she died in 1953. The Electoral Act 1856 was passed through Parliament o March 13, 1856. Victoria was the first Australian colony, and the first legislature anywhere in the world, to adopt the practice of the secret ballot. Victoria's constitution prescribed that the Parliament was to be bicameral, consisting of an upper house, the Legislative Council and a lower house, Legislative Assembly. Men were entitled to vote according to the qualifications described in this book - the right to vote in each house was dependent on status - educational qualifications, income and for either literacy. Two names are registered for the Orbost district: James Dickson and J.C. McLeod.This item is a useful research tool.A 16 pp paper back book which has a clear plastic cover. The covers are beige coloured with the title "Gippsland Electoral Rolls for 1856 and Stock Assessment Payable" in blak print. On the left hand side is a vertical pattern in black print. The book contains an alphabetical list of persons claiming or supposed to be entitled to Vote in the Election of a Member for the District. It lists the needed qualifications of electors followed by the Voters Roll for Legislative Assembly, 1856 and the Voters Roll for Legislative Council, 1856 . She died in 1934.In the early 20th century when formal introductions were a normal expectation of good manners , the exchange of calling cards was a social custom that was essential in developing friendships. This item reflects a time of when courtesy was an important aspect of society. A large lamp used used to light a room by showing light from above. Used in the Orbost district late 19th to early 20th century prior to electricity connection. Generally, lamps like this had a matching decorations on the shade and vase. It would have been almost impossible to find an exact match if the shade was broken so the next best thing was to replace it with a plain white one. The majority of the removable slip fonts were made to the same dimensions so it was not uncommon for an original font to be replaced with a different brand if it became unusable. This is an example of a domestic lighting device in use before the widespread connection of electricity to houses in Orbost.A large lamp which hangs from a bracket. It has a large white glass cover above the wick burner and below is a white bowl decorated with flowers. The hanging lamp is American and, from the design and pattern of the brass work, it was made by Edward Miller & Co. Both the shade and vase (font holder) are glass. This album was donated to the Orbost & District Historical Society after the death of Judy Walcott, a long-time member. The veiling of McKillops bridge was a 'Year of the Outback' event. The event was organised by Orbost resident, Sr Helen Barnes RSJ. to show solidarity with rural people. The local community transformed the bridge into "a symbol of communal love and hope", when its sides were draped with hundreds of personal messages. McKillop's Bridge, located high in the Snowy Mountains, is named after George McKillop, a pioneering explorer of the area. The bridge is a vital link for isolated farming communities living beyond the Bonang highway.This album is a useful reference tool.A large photo album with a bright yellow cover and 19 plastic sleeves. The book was presented to the president, Jacob Perry, as a token of esteem and in appreciation of his interest and services to the movement. Jacob Perry was an Orbost farmer. Born 1874. Died 1950. He was a Boer War veteran , 4th Victorian Imperial Bushmen. He was a shire councillor and worker for school affairs. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. This item comprises records that belonged to the local government accounting system. The Shire of Orbost Council no longer exists having been absorbed by the East Gippsland Shire Council.
