Enamel and porcelain pre dates stainless steel which was first manufactured in 1913. This hospital equipment was available in the 1950s when the Tawonga District General Hospital was built specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.Historical: Shows the development of scientific hospital equipment. This is the twenty fourth catalogue of trees and it contains fruit trees, nut trees, berries and some ornamental trees. Carl Nobelius wrote in his General Remarks that he had one million trees to sell, clean, healthy and pest free. The nurseries were 250 acres in extent and contained two and a half million trees in various stages. His nurseries were at Emerald, Railway Siding and his office half a mile from Emerald Railway Station. He imported new varieties from overseas and the nursery was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, employing 80 people between 1903 and 1930.Green Catalogue 1915 of Fruit Trees, also Elms, Oaks, Planes, Poplars and other Deciduous and Ornamental Trees. Book published by Shell Oil Company advocating use of spray to control all orchard pests & diseases. Shell Oil Co was very active in promotion of its products in Harcourt during the 1950s. The book was regarded as a good handbook guide to diseases of apples and pears.The orchardists of Harcourt, sole traders and hardy pioneers, took more notice of the spray retailers than they did of the Dept of Agriculture, with field days and film nights organized by the Shell Oil Co being a primary source of knowledge about the prevention of orchard pests and diseases. Of course Shell advocated the use of che,mical spray to control all orchard pests and diseases. In the late 1940s the southern part of Bellbird Dell was untouched virgin bush. From the North the dell was worked by Cecil Rhodes whose father Victor owned the orchards and a cool store on land opposite the Vermont High School. Cecil worked the orchards between the creek and Alorak Road. Aged 17, Edwin Thomas Penny took over the 10 acres of freehold land held by his deceased father, Thomas Penny. Edwin Penny developed a reputation as an innovative orchardist and market gardener who grew apples, plums, passion fruit, peaches, pears, and lemons, and between the trees he planted potatoes, rhubarb and other vegetables.Sepia toned digital image of the Penny family.
