Major Damien Batty served in Afghanistan in 2011-2012 with the Bravo Commando Company Group, 2nd Commando Regiment in Uruzgan. The Commandos took part in 20 rotations with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) between 2007 and 2012. Slide photographs of six Stanhope residents prepared to go to the ball held in honour of Princess Alexandra's visit to Melbourne in September 1959. The ball was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. Notes from Matron's Vines book says the lady in yellow is Helen McBain, and next to her in purple is Betty Henderson. The handwritten note implies it is the visit of the Queen Mother, but it was a ball held to welcome Princess Alexandra in September 1959. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This handmade notebook was made by Alfred Haeusler (b.1922) during his childhood in Wodonga in the 1920s-1930s. The notebook is one of several objects in the Haeusler Collection concerning early childhood that provide insight into family and home life in early twentieth century Wodonga. The item is handmade and unique, with well documented provenance. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history, and women’s history. The event and the name of the man is unknown. It is possibly part of a young legatee camp though the photo was in a Comradeship Committee photo album. Part of a photo album (Cat.No. 01588) of material about the life of Legatee Donovan Joynt. This photo shows Donovan Joynt and Queen Elizabeth II reading from a pamphlet he is holding. This is a larger copy of the photograph Cat. No. 01590.1, and records the date of when it was taken as 17 March 1977. Queen Elizabeth visited Melbourne as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of Australia and attended a children's rally in Royal Park wearing this outfit. A crowd of 18,000 people greeted her. Footage of the visit can be seen in National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA-ID 44325). There is no indication of who the veteran on the right was. He is a VC winner and has medals from the second world war. A note on the reverse page mentions a photo in the album of Captain M. Moon V.C with Sir Alfred Kemsley and Colonel Joynt. It was removed by Legatee K.D. A passport of Legatee George Knocks from 1928. George Knocks was born in the UK and joined the Royal Navy in World War 1. He later migrated to Australia and joined Legacy in 1929 until his death in 1945, he left a significant bequest to Melbourne Legacy which was used to help many people. Information from a press release in 1975 relates the story of George Knocks who joined Legacy and left a bequest that made a difference. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. A longer version of the story is in the Weekly Bulletin - 29 Sept 1964 and a document prepared by Legatee Armstrong in 1965 called One Man's Legacy. Summary: George was described as a lonely ex-seaman who migrated to Australia after the first world war. He learnt about Legacy and the work with widows and children. 'He joined up as a Legatee and from that day, the pattern of life changed greatly for George. He became absorbed in his new environment and spent most of his time with the children. The mothers founding him a rugged, but completely trustworthy friend.' When George died on 14 April 1945 he was mourned by many Legacy friends. His left his property to four comrades, as trustees to use in continuing Legacy's work, this bequest became the George Knocks Fund. Series of letters between Mr. W. Cooper and Mr W.B. Russell at the beginning of 1958 regarding progress with the writing of "There Goes a Man"; Russell notes that he is 3-4 weeks behind his planned schedule. Cooper sent a 200 pounds sterling progress payment which was acknowledged and receipted by Russell as the final progress payment, only 24 pounds sterling of which was unexpended.Part of the story of how the book 'There goes a Man' came to be created.Four typed sheets, black or purple on white.Signed W.B. A black and white photo of the girls' classes at Legacy House in the late 1940s being addressed by a Legatee. It was used in the publication to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Legacy in 1948 (see item 00939). The girls are wearing their cotton tunics that were provided by Legacy for each girl in the classes. They appear slightly different colours in the photo - only green ones are currently held in the Legacy collection.The girls appear to be listening to a Legatee and the blackboard behind them says 'A Merry Xmas to all' so it appears to be taken in December. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy held Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. The photo was donated to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. A note with the photo says Marjorie is 8th from the left. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood who passed away in April 2020, and Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and she passed away in 1986. Also donated were girls' green tunic uniform, a souvenir handkerchief, a junior legatee certificate and a $100 Legacy badge. Photocopy of brief biographical notes in respect of the guest of honour, Colonel Sir Edward Dunlop at a Legacy meeting. Legatees met regularly and usually had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The requirement to be a guest of honour at a Legacy meeting is highlighted in purple. It says: A Guest of honour shall be an individual who by reason of his services to the community and/or the ex-servicemen and his dependants, is unanimously deemed by the Board of Management to be worth of being so described". In this case Sir Edward (Weary) Dunlop was a speaker and his brief biography was included in this Bulletin.A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subects spoken on were many and varied. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. This was a letter detailing discussions by the Board about future speakers and sent from the Legacy President to the Chairman of the Programme Committee. Of note there was an interest in younger speakers if they could be 'responsible types'. Set of colour photographs of students from Gt Ryrie Primary School Heathmont and visiting Ringwood Secondary College band and choir. The occasion and year are unkown though possibly a graduuation. These photos were scanned from a packet of negatives (Heathmont Image Centre), with no information on the packet. (Negatives discarded). Note that most of the original negatives have a horizontal or vertical purple line on them which can be seen on the scans, presumably a fault in original processing. No names of children.
